First, open Messages on your Apple Watch. If the conversation is there, the text arrived and the problem is probably notification routing or alerts. If it is missing, check the connection and message setup. Blue-bubble iMessages and green-bubble SMS/MMS texts also have different requirements, especially when your watch is away from your iPhone.
Work through these fixes in order: restore the watch’s connection, check iMessage and notification settings, then restart and update both devices. Unpairing is a last resort.
1. Check the watch’s connection and modes
Apple Watch can connect through Bluetooth to its paired iPhone, Wi-Fi, or—on cellular models with service—cellular. If texts disappear only when you leave your iPhone behind, the watch may have lost its independent connection.
- Open Control Center. Press the Apple Watch side button, then check the connection indicators. Apple’s watchOS guide explains the controls and status shown there; labels can vary by software version.
- Turn off Airplane Mode if it is on. If an active Focus or Do Not Disturb mode is silencing alerts, turn it off temporarily while testing. These modes can suppress alerts even when a message is present in Messages.
- Check the connection you need. When the iPhone is nearby, confirm the watch is connected to it. When the iPhone is not nearby, the watch needs usable Wi-Fi or cellular service for independent messaging.
- Send a new test message and check the watch’s Messages app, not just whether it alerts.
The message type matters. iMessage can reach a connected watch over Wi-Fi or cellular even when the iPhone is not nearby or powered on. SMS/MMS and third-party push notifications have a different condition: on a cellular Apple Watch operating away from the iPhone, the paired iPhone must be powered on and connected to Wi-Fi or cellular, though it need not be nearby. See Apple’s guidance on using Apple Watch without your iPhone nearby.

A GPS-only Apple Watch has no cellular connection of its own; away from the iPhone it needs Wi-Fi for independent connectivity. A cellular model also needs an eligible plan, a supported carrier, and coverage. Apple notes that carrier, region, and account eligibility vary; some prepaid, older, or corporate plans may not support setup. Check Apple’s cellular setup requirements or ask your carrier about plan and roaming support.
2. Check iMessage, the Apple Account, and alerts
Verify iMessage and the account
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Apps > Messages. On older iOS versions, Messages may appear directly in Settings.
- Make sure iMessage is on, then tap Send & Receive. Check that the Apple Account and the phone number or email addresses you expect to use are selected.
- In the Apple Watch app, go to My Watch > General > Apple Account and confirm that the watch is signed in with the intended account.
If iMessage activation or account matching appears stuck, use Apple’s sign-out recovery sequence: on iPhone, open Settings > Apps > Messages > Send & Receive, tap the Apple Account, then tap Sign Out. Return to Settings > Apps > Messages, turn iMessage off and back on, then return to Send & Receive and tap Use your Apple Account for iMessage to sign in. Activation may depend on account and carrier conditions, so do not assume it will be immediate. These steps are in Apple’s Apple Watch Messages troubleshooting guide.

Turning on iMessage addresses iMessage setup; it does not by itself fix every SMS/MMS problem. If blue messages arrive but green ones do not, return to the paired iPhone’s power, network, and SMS/MMS relay requirements in step 1.

- On iPhone, open the Apple Watch app and go to My Watch > Notifications > Messages.
- Choose Mirror my iPhone or an appropriate custom notification setting, and make sure Messages alerts are not disabled.
- For a conversation that alone is silent, open it in the iPhone Messages app, tap the contact or group icon at the top, and turn off Hide Alerts if enabled.
Apple Watch and iPhone do not necessarily alert at the same time: notifications go to one device or the other depending on whether the iPhone is unlocked and whether the watch is being worn and unlocked. If Messages is open and active on the iPhone, a separate watch alert may not appear. Check the watch’s Messages app to distinguish a missing alert from a missing text. Apple explains this notification routing behavior.

3. Restart and update both devices; re-pair only as a last resort
- Restart the Apple Watch and iPhone.
- After both devices reconnect, send a new test message and check whether it appears in the watch’s Messages app.
- If the issue remains, install available iOS and watchOS updates, then test again. Apple includes restarting and checking for updates in its troubleshooting flow; an update being available does not establish that it caused the problem.
- If connection, account, and notification checks still have not resolved it, unpair the Apple Watch and pair it again using the iPhone’s Apple Watch app. Follow the prompts to restore a backup or configure the watch again.
Unpairing takes time and may require the devices to be together and your Apple Account password, particularly if Activation Lock is involved. You may also need to re-add a cellular plan. Confirm that Messages works on the iPhone first: if the iPhone itself cannot send or receive texts, address that issue with the carrier or Apple before resetting the watch. If the problem continues after re-pairing, contact Apple Support through Apple Messages support; ask your carrier about SMS/MMS, plan eligibility, or roaming problems.

Find the likely cause by symptom
| What you see | Where to check first |
|---|---|
| No messages appear on the iPhone or watch | Confirm iPhone Messages works; check the Apple Account and, for SMS/MMS, carrier service. |
| Messages are on the iPhone but not the watch | Check the watch connection and Messages notification settings; consider whether the iPhone is unlocked or Messages is active there. |
| Blue iMessages work, but green SMS/MMS texts do not | Check that the paired iPhone is powered on and online when the watch is operating independently. |
| Texts work near the iPhone but not away from it | Check Wi-Fi or cellular availability, watch model, and—in the case of SMS/MMS—the paired iPhone’s power and internet connection. |
| Only one conversation is silent | Check Hide Alerts for that conversation. Also verify the sender’s destination number or email; blocking or group-message behavior can be relevant, but is not established by silence alone. |
| A red exclamation mark appears on a message | Tap the alert and retry. If it still fails, check connection and account settings. |
