Apple announced the Apple Watch SE 3 on September 9, 2025, and it went on sale September 19, starting at $249 in the U.S. The rumors can now be checked against the finished watch: most of the headline feature predictions came true, but the rumored S11 chip and major case redesign did not. The SE 3 uses an S10 chip and keeps its 40mm and 44mm aluminum case sizes. Apple’s launch announcement and technical specifications confirm what shipped.
Which Apple Watch SE 3 rumors came true?

Pre-launch coverage raised these possibilities, but the finished product—not a prediction—settles the question. The S11, plastic-case, and larger-chassis claims were misses or possibilities that did not make it into the product. MacRumors’ pre-launch rumor coverage documents those expectations.
1. Always-On display
What was expected
An Always-On display was a prominent prediction because the SE 2 required a wrist raise or screen tap to show the watch face. Pre-launch coverage treated it as a likely way to narrow the gap with pricier models. MacRumors’ pre-launch guide discussed the possibility.
What Apple delivered
The SE 3 has an Always-On Retina OLED display with LTPO. Apple rates its brightness at up to 1,000 nits and its minimum brightness at 2 nits. When your wrist is down, the display dims rather than staying at full brightness, so the time and complications remain glanceable while power use is managed. It is useful at a desk or during a workout, but it does not give the SE 3 every premium-panel feature found on more expensive models. Apple’s specifications list the display details.

2. S10 chip, gestures, and on-device Siri
The S11 prediction was wrong
Rumors anticipated a newer processor and some pre-launch reporting floated the S11. The retail SE 3 instead uses Apple’s S10 chip, with a 64-bit dual-core processor and four-core Neural Engine. Apple also lists 64GB of capacity. Do not read the chip upgrade as a promise of a particular speed increase: no performance percentage is established here. Pre-launch reporting and Apple’s specifications show the prediction and final hardware.
What the new chip enables
The SE 3 supports Double Tap, which lets you perform certain actions by tapping your thumb and index finger together, and Wrist Flick, which can dismiss notifications or calls with a one-handed motion. Apple also describes faster on-device Siri for supported requests, reducing the need for a network connection in those cases. Feature availability can vary by device, language, and region; the S10 does not mean every Apple Intelligence feature is available on the watch. Apple’s announcement notes that availability varies.
3. Sleep and temperature-related health features
Sleep apnea notifications and Sleep Score
The SE 3 supports sleep apnea notifications and Sleep Score, alongside sleep-stage tracking and respiratory-rate-related sleep data. Apple says sleep apnea notifications are intended to identify signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea in adults aged 18 or older who do not already have a diagnosis. They are notifications, not a clinical diagnosis; anyone with concerns should seek medical advice. Sleep Score gives a summary of sleep quality rather than a medical assessment. Wrist temperature and Cycle Tracking
Temperature sensing enables retrospective ovulation estimates in Cycle Tracking. Apple says wrist-temperature sensing is not intended for medical use, and Cycle Tracking should not be used as birth control or to diagnose a health condition. These additions broaden the SE’s health tools, but they do not make it equivalent to models with more health hardware.
4. Fast charging
Why it matters with sleep tracking
Apple says the SE 3 can charge to up to 80% in about 45 minutes, provide up to eight hours of normal use from a 15-minute charge, or provide up to eight hours of sleep tracking from an eight-minute charge. Those are Apple laboratory figures using specified chargers and pre-production testing; actual results vary with adapter, temperature, battery state, settings, and use. The short-charge sleep figure is particularly practical if you wear the watch overnight and need a brief top-up before bed. Apple’s technical specifications provide the charging estimates and conditions.
5. 5G cellular connectivity
RedCap on cellular models
Cellular versions of the SE 3 support 5G RedCap and LTE. RedCap is a lower-power cellular technology intended for wearable devices, not the same capability profile as a flagship smartphone’s 5G connection. Availability depends on supported markets, compatible carriers, and a qualifying plan. Apple’s cellular information explains regional and provider requirements.

When cellular is worth paying for
Cellular can make sense for a child using Apple Watch For Your Kids or for a runner who wants to leave an iPhone behind while staying connected. GPS-only is the simpler value choice if you normally carry your iPhone. Cellular service adds a recurring carrier charge, and features available through Apple Watch For Your Kids are not identical to personal pairing; Apple warns that some features are unavailable in that setup. 64GB capacity
The 64GB capacity leaves more room for apps, downloaded music, podcasts, and other locally stored content—useful if you exercise without your phone. The full capacity is not all available for personal files because watchOS and other system data use storage. Apple’s specifications list the capacity.
Ion-X glass
Apple says the SE 3’s Ion-X glass is four-times more crack resistant than the SE 2’s under Apple’s testing conditions. That is not a claim that the screen is scratch-proof, shatterproof, or immune to damage. Treat it as a comparative durability claim, not a guarantee. What the design rumors got wrong—and what the SE 3 still lacks
No plastic body or larger chassis
The SE 3 retains an aluminum case, offered in Midnight and Starlight, with 40mm and 44mm sizes and 10.7mm depth. The reported possibility of colorful plastic casing did not become a shipped feature, and the watch did not move to the rumored 41mm and 45mm sizes or a major Series 10-style redesign. Premium health features remain a meaningful difference
The SE 3 does not include ECG or blood-oxygen monitoring, and it does not have every health feature offered by the Series 11 or Ultra 3. Compare those models if either capability or a more premium display and case is central to your decision; the SE 3’s sleep and temperature features do not erase that hardware gap.
Other useful capabilities carried by the SE 3
- Apple rates battery life at up to 18 hours of normal use and up to 32 hours in Low Power Mode; these are estimates, not guarantees for every routine.
- Crash Detection and Fall Detection support safety use.
- The watch is rated water resistant to 50 meters for shallow-water activities, but Apple does not recommend it for scuba diving, waterskiing, or high-velocity water activities; water resistance can diminish over time.
- It includes Apple Pay, a compass, and an always-on altimeter.
- It is compatible with watchOS 26, which adds software capabilities distinct from new hardware.
- A Magnetic Fast Charger to USB-C cable is included, so a second charger is optional. Existing Apple Watch bands generally remain compatible, apart from bands designed specifically for Apple Watch Ultra. MacRumors’ SE roundup notes band compatibility.

Is the Apple Watch SE 3 worth buying?
For first-time buyers and parents
The SE 3 is the lowest-cost current Apple Watch, with a $249 U.S. launch starting price, and it offers more of the modern daily-use experience than earlier SE models: Always-On display, faster charging, current gestures, sleep features, and cellular as an option. Parents should weigh the usefulness of Apple Watch For Your Kids against carrier costs and the fact that some features differ from personal pairing.
For Apple Watch SE 2 owners
An upgrade is most persuasive if you specifically want Always-On display, faster charging, sleep apnea notifications, wrist-temperature sensing, Double Tap or Wrist Flick, cellular 5G, or 64GB storage. If the SE 2 already handles your notifications, workouts, and daily battery routine, the new features may not justify replacing it.
