AccuWeather did release a genuinely standalone Android Wear 2.0 app in February 2017. The watch-native version could be installed from Google Play on the watch, offered hourly and daily forecasts for multiple locations, and included a custom watch face. “Standalone” meant it was not dependent on a nearby phone for every interaction—not that forecasts worked without an internet connection.
What launched in February 2017
AccuWeather’s new watch application began rolling out on Wednesday, February 15, 2017, and was reported as available the following day. Android Headlines described it as a new Android Wear 2.0-compatible app rather than a routine update to the older phone-dependent companion. It was free to download through Google Play at launch.
The launch mattered because Android Wear 2.0 introduced watch-side app installation. Owners of compatible watches could open Google Play on the watch, search for AccuWeather, and install the application without treating the phone app as the only gateway.

What the standalone app added
- Hourly forecasts, extending beyond the older app’s limited near-term view.
- Daily forecasts designed for a broader outlook.
- Multiple locations instead of a single fixed weather view.
- Celsius or Fahrenheit temperature units.
- Configurable time and date formats.
- A custom AccuWeather watch face.
- Compatibility with other watch faces, although the launch report did not establish that every third-party face exposed every AccuWeather detail.
Standalone does not mean fully offline
In practical terms, the 2017 app was designed to keep functioning when a paired smartphone was not required for each interaction. That was the important contrast with the companion model.
Weather forecasts still need a data path. Depending on the watch and its setup, that could mean Wi-Fi, cellular service on a connected model, or information relayed or synchronized through another connection. The launch report does not document refresh intervals, offline caching, initial phone setup requirements, or which features remained usable with no network at all. It would therefore be inaccurate to describe the app as a full offline forecasting service.

AccuWeather kept the older companion offering available for watches that had not received Android Wear 2.0. That approach preserved basic support for older hardware, but it also meant two experiences with materially different capabilities.
Installation and compatibility in 2017
- Use a smartwatch running Android Wear 2.0 or a later compatible release.
- Open Google Play directly on the watch.
- Search for AccuWeather.
- Install the free application.
- Set locations, temperature units, time and date formats, and watch-face preferences.
Android Wear 2.0 initially ran on only a limited selection of watches, so the potential audience was small. The launch report did not publish a complete device list; it is safer to identify the operating-system requirement than to infer compatibility from a watch’s brand or age. A watch remaining on an earlier Android Wear version could use the legacy companion app where that app remained supported, but not the new Android Wear 2.0 package.

What “Android Wear” means today
Google later renamed Android Wear to Wear OS. Google’s current companion listing notes that Wear OS was previously called Android Wear: Wear OS by Google Smartwatch.
The 2017 product should therefore be read as a historical Android Wear 2.0 launch, not as a guarantee about a current package, interface, or watch-support matrix.

AccuWeather’s current Wear OS status
The live Google Play product is now listed as AccuWeather: Weather Radar for Android phones and Wear OS devices: Google Play listing. At the time represented by the current listing, it was free to download, supported by advertising and in-app purchases, had more than 100 million downloads, showed a 3.5-star rating, and reported an update on July 6, 2026.
Those are current listing signals, not proof that the 2017 standalone app retained its original package identity or feature set. The listing’s Wear OS label also does not guarantee compatibility with every obsolete Android Wear 2.0 watch. Check the live listing from the specific watch and phone, the watch’s operating-system version, and the account’s country or region.

What to check when installing or troubleshooting
The app does not appear on the watch
- Confirm the watch is online and signed into the intended Google account.
- Check its operating-system version; the historical standalone release required Android Wear 2.0.
- Consider regional or device-level Play Store availability.
The app installs but weather does not refresh
- Verify Wi-Fi or cellular access and any required location permissions.
- Check battery or background restrictions that could prevent updates.
- Do not assume that “standalone” removes every dependency on a network or on prior configuration.
The watch face shows no AccuWeather information
Use a face that supports the relevant data source or complication. The 2017 report’s statement that the app worked with other watch faces should not be expanded into a claim that every face supports all forecast elements.
Why the 2017 release still matters
For its time, the app was a meaningful step beyond a glanceable current-temperature companion. Multiple locations, hourly and daily forecasts, localization settings, and a dedicated face made the watch more useful when the phone was not immediately available. The trade-off was a narrow Android Wear 2.0 hardware audience and an unclear offline story: watch-side installation reduced phone dependence, but fresh weather data still depended on connectivity.
For a present-day buyer or Android Wear owner, the practical verdict is straightforward: the February 2017 report was substantially correct, but it describes a historical platform milestone. Use the current AccuWeather Wear OS listing—not the old launch article—to determine whether a particular watch can install and run today’s app.
