For some adults, yes: AirPods Pro 2 can serve as an FDA-authorized over-the-counter hearing-aid option. Apple’s Hearing Aid feature is intended for adults 18 and older with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss. It is not a universal replacement for dedicated hearing aids or professional care: fit, battery life, hearing-loss severity, daily needs, and access to an Apple device all matter.
The feature arrived with iOS 18 in 2024, but iOS 18 is its launch history, not a permanent compatibility guarantee. Check Apple’s current device, software, firmware, and regional availability before relying on it.
What iOS 18 added to AirPods Pro 2
Apple introduced a group of hearing-health features, not one generic volume boost. On compatible AirPods, the distinction matters:

- Hearing Aid: Personalized amplification based on an Apple Hearing Test result or a compatible audiogram from a hearing professional. The feature operates in Transparency mode.
- Hearing Protection: Features intended to reduce exposure to loud environmental sound.
- Media Assist: Applies hearing-profile adjustments to supported media and calls. It is distinct from amplification of the surrounding environment.
These functions are not interchangeable with ordinary media volume controls or Live Listen. Apple’s setup and feature guide explains their operation and controls.

Are they legally hearing aids?
In the United States, the FDA authorized Apple’s Hearing Aid Feature in September 2024 as an over-the-counter hearing-aid software device. The system uses software on a compatible Apple device together with compatible AirPods hardware and firmware. The FDA describes OTC hearing aids as intended for adults 18 and older with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss. See the FDA authorization announcement and its OTC hearing-aid guidance.
That status is more meaningful than simply using consumer earbuds as an amplifier, but it does not mean AirPods suit every hearing profile or replace an audiologist. OTC use can be self-directed for eligible adults; diagnosis, counseling, examination, and professional fitting can still be valuable. Prescription hearing aids may be appropriate across a wider range of loss and circumstances.
Who is a good candidate?
AirPods Pro 2 are most promising for an adult who has mild-to-moderate hearing difficulty, mainly wants help following everyday speech, already uses an iPhone or iPad, and is comfortable wearing and charging earbuds. They are particularly appealing if the person already owns a working pair and wants occasional conversation support alongside music and calls.
Apple’s FDA-reviewed study summary reports 118 subjects with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss; the self-fitting approach produced similar perceived benefit to professional fitting of the same device and comparable results for amplification and speech understanding in noise. That supports the authorized self-fitting approach, not a guarantee that every user will hear equally well in every room. The FDA summary is available in its announcement.

Who should seek professional advice first?
Do not treat an earbud setup as a way to investigate potentially medical hearing problems. FDA warning signs that call for professional evaluation include:
- Sudden hearing loss, or hearing that is changing quickly.
- Hearing loss in one ear, or a substantial difference between ears.
- Ear pain, drainage, or an active ear infection.
- Dizziness, balance problems, or unusual ear pressure.
- New or significant tinnitus, especially if it is one-sided.
- Suspected severe or profound loss, or persistent difficulty understanding speech despite amplification.
- Hearing difficulty in a child or anyone under 18.
These signs do not establish a diagnosis, but they make self-fitting OTC assistance a poor substitute for assessment. The FDA says OTC devices may not provide adequate benefit for more severe loss.
Compatibility: confirm before you buy or depend on them
The original feature was built for AirPods Pro 2, not every AirPods model. As of August 2026, Apple’s current availability page lists AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3 for hearing features. Support depends on the current software, firmware, compatible iPhone or iPad, and authorization in the user’s country or region. The original U.S. labeling identified iPhone XS or later and specified iPad generations, but device requirements can evolve; use Apple’s current availability information rather than treating an old model list as permanent.

How to set up the Hearing Aid feature
- Charge the AirPods Pro 2, pair them with a compatible iPhone or iPad, and put them in your ears.
- Open Settings, tap the connected AirPods’ name, then tap Hearing Assistance.
- Tap Set Up Hearing Assistance.
- Choose Take a Hearing Test, or select Use a Prior Test Result to use an earlier Apple result or add a compatible professional audiogram.
- Tap Set Up Hearing Aid, then follow the prompts, including Get Started, Next, and Turn On Hearing Aid.
Depending on the result, Apple may direct you to Media Assist instead of Hearing Aid. For adjustments, go to Settings → AirPods → Hearing Assistance → Adjustments. The available controls include amplification, left-right balance, tone, Ambient Noise Reduction, Conversation Boost, and Media Assist. Hearing Aid amplification is separate from media volume and requires Transparency mode for environmental amplification.
After setup, Hearing Assistance controls are available in Control Center; touch and hold the volume control to adjust amplification separately from media volume. Apple says settings are stored on the AirPods, so they continue using the latest settings when the paired iPhone or iPad is not nearby. That is not the same as being fully independent: the AirPods still need charge, and setup and broader ecosystem controls rely on Apple devices. Apple’s instructions provide the current steps.

No category is automatically superior in every situation. Dedicated devices vary considerably; compare fitting support, return terms, service, battery arrangements, and features that matter to you. AirPods’ multifunctionality is a genuine advantage, but it does not make their hearing performance universal.

Price, battery, fit, and real-world limits
Apple’s U.S. store listed AirPods Pro 2 at $249 as of August 2026. That is a product price, not a guaranteed total cost of ownership: replacement after loss, battery aging, and accessories can add expense. Apple says some insurance providers may reimburse qualifying orders, but coverage depends on the plan; verify directly with the insurer. See Apple’s product page.

Apple lists up to six hours of listening with Active Noise Cancellation on and up to 30 hours with the charging case. Actual runtime varies with use, settings, fit, temperature, and other factors; hearing-aid use should not be assumed to match a headline listening figure. Consider whether you can remove the earbuds to recharge, carry the case, and keep a backup for long days. If uninterrupted all-day hearing assistance is essential, a dedicated device may be a better match.
AirPods Pro 2 use silicone tips. Try the available sizes and aim for a secure, comfortable seal; poor fit can impair performance or contribute to feedback. Do not tolerate persistent discomfort or squealing. Hearing aids do not restore normal hearing, and adaptation can take time, as the FDA review and labeling make clear.
They may help with one-on-one conversation, but amplification does not guarantee clear speech in restaurants, groups, traffic, or reverberant rooms. Conversation Boost is intended to focus on a person speaking in front of the wearer and is best suited to one-on-one conversations. ANC reduces selected unwanted sound; Transparency passes environmental sound through; Hearing Aid applies personalized amplification. Those are different functions, and noise cancellation alone does not make speech clearer.

- Existing iPhone user with mild loss and occasional conversation difficulty: A strong candidate to try the feature.
- Wants one device for calls, music, and hearing help: A good multifunctional fit if earbud comfort and charging are acceptable.
- Already owns AirPods Pro 2: Potentially a low additional-cost way to try eligible hearing assistance, provided the feature is supported in the region.
- Needs uninterrupted all-day support or professional follow-up: Compare dedicated hearing aids and professional care.
- Android-first user: Poor fit for the full hearing feature and its controls.
- Sudden, one-sided, worsening, or severe loss: Seek medical or audiological evaluation rather than relying on OTC amplification.
Troubleshooting common problems
The Hearing Aid option is missing
Confirm the model is AirPods Pro 2, that they are connected and in your ears, the iPhone or iPad and AirPods firmware are current, the feature is authorized in your region, and the AirPods are charged. Complete or import a hearing result if prompted. Availability is regional, so check Apple’s feature-availability page.

Amplification seems ineffective
Check that the AirPods are in Transparency mode, the tips seal properly, and you are changing Hearing Aid amplification rather than media volume. Verify that the selected test or audiogram is current and yours. Allow time to adapt, but if speech remains unclear, especially in noise, do not keep raising volume indefinitely; seek a hearing evaluation.
There is whistling or squealing
Reseat the AirPods and try another tip size. Check for excessive amplification and blocked or dirty microphone openings; nearby objects or hand placement can also contribute to feedback. Persistent squealing warrants a fit check or support advice, not simply more volume.
One ear seems weaker
Balance controls can address a known, stable difference, but a sudden or substantial difference between ears is a reason for professional evaluation rather than merely an adjustment.
The battery runs out
Carry the charging case and plan charging breaks; reduce unnecessary media use if runtime is tight. If loss of amplification during the day would compromise safety or essential communication, consider a dedicated hearing aid with a wear and power plan that better suits your routine.
Should you choose AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, or hearing aids?
AirPods Pro 3 are a newer Apple option, and Apple lists automatic Conversation Boost among their Hearing Aid capabilities. Apple’s U.S. store listed them at $249 as of August 2026. That does not make AirPods Pro 2 inadequate: an existing, functional pair may be sufficient for an eligible user who values its current feature set. Compare current compatibility and features on Apple’s support page and Pro 3 store page before deciding.
Choose or try AirPods Pro 2 if you are an eligible adult, use Apple devices, have mild-to-moderate hearing difficulty, and want a multipurpose self-fitting option. Arrange an evaluation if the difficulty is new, asymmetric, worsening, or unexplained. Prioritize dedicated or prescription hearing aids if you need professional fitting, specialized support, greater all-day reliability, or care for a more complex or severe loss.
