Apple currently sells one AirPods Pro 3 model. The claim that two versions are planned refers to a rumored higher-end variant that could add tiny infrared cameras for gesture controls, contextual sensing and future AI-related features. Apple has not announced that product, confirmed its name, set its price or committed to a launch date.
The current AirPods Pro 3 launched in September 2025 at $249 in the United States. Earlier reports pointed to a premium model arriving in 2026, but newer coverage suggests camera-equipped AirPods could slip to 2027.
What Apple sells today
Apple announced AirPods Pro 3 on September 9, 2025, and made them available on September 19. The current model starts at $249 in the U.S. Apple’s official product pages list only one AirPods Pro 3 retail model, not two separate Pro 3 versions.
The confirmed AirPods Pro 3 includes the H2 headphone chip, active noise cancellation, a redesigned in-ear fit, a USB-C charging case and heart-rate sensing during workouts. It also supports features including Hearing Test, Hearing Aid and Hearing Protection, although availability depends on region, regulation and compatible software.

Apple says the model delivers up to twice the active-noise-cancellation performance of the previous-generation AirPods Pro and four times that of the original AirPods Pro. Those are Apple’s claims, not independent test results. Full functionality also requires compatible Apple hardware and current operating-system software. What the rumored second version could be
Multiple reports describe a possible higher-end AirPods Pro variant that would sit above the current $249 model rather than immediately replace it. That would give Apple a two-tier Pro lineup, similar in principle to the two AirPods 4 versions—one with active noise cancellation and one without it.
That precedent makes the rumor plausible, but it is not confirmation. Apple has not announced a second AirPods Pro 3 model, and it has not said whether the product would be called AirPods Pro 4, AirPods Ultra or something else. “Camera AirPods” is useful shorthand for the rumor, not an official product name.

The most consistent detail in the reports is the addition of tiny infrared cameras. The proposed sensors would reportedly be used for detecting hand gestures, understanding nearby surroundings and enabling new interactions with Apple devices.

Possible applications mentioned in rumor coverage include:
- Controlling playback or other functions with gestures near the wearer’s face.
- Recognizing aspects of the surrounding environment.
- Supporting Apple Intelligence or Visual Intelligence features.
- Improving spatial-audio experiences, particularly alongside Apple Vision Pro.
- Reducing reliance on conventional stem-based controls.
The last point is especially speculative. Reports have discussed gesture controls, but Apple has not confirmed that pressure-sensitive controls would be removed or reduced.
They would not necessarily be ordinary video cameras
“Camera” can give the wrong impression. The reports describe infrared sensing hardware, not conventional outward-facing cameras designed for taking photographs or recording video. No reliable information is available about resolution, field of view, recording capability, processing location or privacy indicators.

It would therefore be inaccurate to say that the earbuds will continuously record the wearer’s surroundings, identify people or replace an iPhone camera. Those are unanswered questions, not confirmed features.

Could it include an H3 chip?
Some reports have suggested that the premium model could use a future H3 chip, potentially bringing improvements to audio quality, latency or computational features. That is a separate rumor from the infrared-camera claim and should not be treated as a confirmed specification.
Apple Intelligence support is even less certain. Any such feature would depend on Apple’s final hardware, software, privacy model, supported devices and regional availability. A premium AirPods model would not automatically make every AI feature available on every iPhone, Mac, iPad, Apple Watch or Vision Pro.
When could the second model launch?
The timing has become less certain as the rumor has developed:
- Reports in 2025 suggested that a second, higher-end AirPods Pro model could follow the AirPods Pro 3 in 2026.
- Reports in early 2026 continued to describe a premium model with cameras and possible AI-related capabilities.
- More recent coverage has suggested that camera-equipped AirPods may not arrive until 2027. One report said Apple has two AirPods models in development without definitively identifying both as AirPods Pro models.
So “launching in 2026” should not be presented as settled. Apple has not announced a release date, and the product could be delayed, renamed, changed substantially or canceled.

How much might the premium model cost?
Rumor coverage has placed the possible price above $249, with estimates around $299 to $349 or more. Those figures are speculation, not Apple pricing. Apple could choose a different price, discontinue the current Pro 3, or sell both models together at an unexpected gap.
The only confirmed price in this story is the current AirPods Pro 3 starting price of $249 in the United States.

Buy now if you need earbuds
Buy the current AirPods Pro 3 if you need new earbuds immediately and want Apple’s officially available in-ear flagship. It is the sensible choice if you value the current ANC system, redesigned fit, heart-rate sensing, hearing-health features and Apple ecosystem integration.

Consider waiting if you already own AirPods Pro 2
If your AirPods Pro 2 still work well, waiting is reasonable if the rumored camera and gesture features are the main reason you are considering an upgrade. You avoid buying a $249 product shortly before a potentially more advanced model appears.
However, waiting could mean waiting into 2027—or longer. The premium product may never launch in the reported form, and it may be sold as a separate luxury tier rather than as a direct replacement.
Do not wait only because of the headline
A repeated rumor is not a release commitment. If you need better noise cancellation, a new fit or working hearing-health features now, the current AirPods Pro 3 is the product Apple actually sells. Buy it for its confirmed capabilities, not for the possibility of a future camera model.

Important unknowns
- The final product name, including whether “AirPods Pro 4” or “AirPods Ultra” will be used.
- Whether the premium model will be sold alongside AirPods Pro 3.
- The exact camera hardware, field of view and sensing capabilities.
- Whether sensing happens on-device or through the cloud.
- Whether users can disable the sensors and how active sensing would be indicated.
- Battery life, case size and whether the cameras require a larger battery.
- Compatibility requirements for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Vision Pro.
- Whether an H3 chip is included.
- The final price and launch date.
Privacy and practical trade-offs
Infrared sensors would raise legitimate privacy questions even if they are not designed to record video. Buyers would reasonably want to know whether anything is stored, whether processing is performed locally, whether sensing can be disabled and how the earbuds behave in workplaces, schools or jurisdictions with recording restrictions.
The added hardware could also affect battery life, weight and size. Cameras, sensing and additional processing require power, but no reliable battery-life figures are available for the rumored model.
The current verdict
There are not currently two officially announced AirPods Pro 3 models. There is one confirmed $249 AirPods Pro 3 and a rumored higher-end variant that may add infrared cameras for gesture, contextual and AI-related features.
Earlier reporting favored 2026, while newer coverage has raised the possibility of 2027. Until Apple makes an announcement, the premium model’s name, specifications, price, availability and release date remain unknown.
