AirPods Pro 3 are no longer an upcoming product. Apple announced them on September 9, 2025, and began selling them on September 19 at $249 in the U.S. The next possible step is a higher-end AirPods Pro variant with rumored infrared cameras for AI or spatial-computing features—but Apple has confirmed neither the product nor its release date.
So the practical choice is simple: buy AirPods Pro 3 for the features available today, or wait only if camera-based AI and spatial computing are more important to you than having a definite purchase.
AirPods Pro 3: the current status
AirPods Pro 3 launched on September 19, 2025, following Apple’s September 9 announcement and the opening of preorders on the same day. Apple’s U.S. starting price is $249. Apple’s official store was still listing the standard AirPods Pro 3 at that price when checked on August 18, 2026.
There is currently no official announcement for another AirPods Pro generation, a product called “AirPods Pro 4,” or a second Pro 3 model. Older pages describing AirPods Pro 3 as an unreleased product are therefore out of date.

Apple’s announcement is available in its AirPods Pro 3 newsroom release, while current availability is shown on the official buying page.
What AirPods Pro 3 already offer
Stronger active noise cancellation
Apple claims AirPods Pro 3 deliver up to twice the active noise cancellation performance of AirPods Pro 2 and up to four times the noise reduction of the original AirPods Pro. Those are Apple’s own claims under its specified testing conditions, not a universal independent measurement for every listener or environment.
A redesigned fit with five ear-tip sizes
The earbuds have been redesigned internally, with the ear-tip geometry moved toward the center of the earbud. Apple says the design was informed by more than 10,000 ear scans and over 100,000 hours of user research.

That may make the Pro 3 a better prospect for people who struggled to seal or comfortably wear earlier models, although fit remains highly individual. A poor seal can reduce noise cancellation, bass response, and sensor reliability.
Workout heart-rate sensing
AirPods Pro 3 include a photoplethysmography heart-rate sensor. When paired with a compatible iPhone, Apple says they can record heart rate, calories, and workouts in the Fitness app, with support for up to 50 workout types.

This is best understood as a convenience feature for exercise, especially for users who prefer not to wear a watch. It is not a medical-grade monitor and does not replace the broader health, safety, and workout capabilities of an Apple Watch. Results can vary with fit, movement, skin contact, and software compatibility.
Longer battery life
Apple rates AirPods Pro 3 for up to eight hours of listening with ANC enabled on a single charge. In Hearing Aid mode with Transparency enabled, Apple lists up to 10 hours under specified conditions. Actual endurance varies with volume, listening mode, software, fit, and other usage factors.
IP57 resistance
Both the earbuds and charging case carry an IP57 dust, sweat, and water-resistance rating. This is useful for workouts and exposure to rain, but it does not make the product waterproof. Do not treat AirPods Pro 3 as suitable for swimming, showering, or deliberate submersion. Apple’s detailed specifications are available on its technical specifications page.
Live Translation, with important requirements
Live Translation works with AirPods Pro 3 when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running iOS 26 or later. Language, region, and device support apply; the earbuds do not independently provide every part of the translation process.
Supported languages listed by Apple include U.S. and U.K. English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Mandarin variants. Availability can change by region and software version. Check Apple’s feature-availability documentation before buying specifically for translation.

Other hardware and hearing features
The earbuds use Apple’s H2 chip and the MagSafe charging case uses a U2 chip. The USB-C case supports MagSafe, Apple Watch, and Qi-certified charging.

What may come after AirPods Pro 3?
A possible premium model, not necessarily an immediate replacement
The main recurring rumor is that Apple may introduce a more expensive, higher-end AirPods Pro variant that could sit alongside the $249 AirPods Pro 3. That would be different from a straightforward replacement and may represent a tiered product strategy.
However, Apple has not confirmed the model’s name, price, design, specifications, or existence. “AirPods Pro 4,” “AI AirPods,” and “AirPods Pro 3 with cameras” are labels used in secondary coverage, not official product names.
Rumored infrared cameras
Reports have associated the possible higher-end model with tiny infrared cameras. Suggested uses include environmental awareness, AI-powered contextual functions, gesture recognition, and deeper integration with Apple’s spatial-computing ecosystem.

These cameras remain entirely unconfirmed. Apple has not described their resolution, field of view, recording behavior, privacy indicators, processing method, or final software purpose. A safe summary is that reports indicate Apple may be exploring camera-equipped AirPods for future AI or spatial-computing functions, but there is no confirmed consumer product yet.
Camera-equipped earbuds would also create practical questions. Would sensing be visibly indicated? Would processing happen on the earbuds, an iPhone, or a headset? How much battery and heat would the sensors add? Would the system recognize gestures or surroundings without another Apple device? How comfortable would people be wearing cameras in public? None of those questions has an official answer.

Reports from 9to5Mac, MacRumors, and TechRadar differ on timing. A 2026 release is possible, but a 2027 arrival for camera-equipped AirPods is also plausible. Neither is confirmed.
Should you buy AirPods Pro 3 or wait?
Buy now if you:
- Need premium Apple earbuds now.
- Want the current combination of ANC, redesigned fit, heart-rate workout sensing, IP57 resistance, and up to eight hours of ANC listening.
- Use an iPhone, Apple Watch, or other Apple hardware and value ecosystem integration.
- Want Live Translation and have a compatible iPhone, iOS version, Apple Intelligence support, and supported language and region.
- Do not want to pay a likely premium for an unannounced product.
Wait if you:
- Your current earbuds work well and you have no immediate need to upgrade.
- You specifically want possible camera-based AI or spatial-computing features.
- You are comfortable waiting without a confirmed date or guaranteed product.
- You would consider paying more than $249 for a premium variant.
Different readers, different answers
AirPods Pro 2 owners: upgrade for the fit, battery, water resistance, heart-rate sensing, or other current features—not because a successor is confirmed.

First-time Apple buyers: AirPods Pro 3 are the definite option. Waiting for rumored hardware could leave you waiting indefinitely.

Fitness users: the heart-rate sensor is useful if you want workout data without always wearing a watch, but it is not an Apple Watch replacement.
Translation users: verify iPhone, iOS, Apple Intelligence, language, and regional compatibility first. The feature is not a universal earbud-only translator.
Spatial-computing enthusiasts: waiting is reasonable if camera-assisted interaction is your main motivation, but treat 2027 as a possibility rather than a promise.

Android users: AirPods can function as Bluetooth earbuds, but the most advanced Apple features depend on Apple hardware and software. A cross-platform model from Sony or Bose may be a better fit if platform flexibility and multipoint support matter more than Apple integration.
Readers who dislike sealed in-ear tips can also consider AirPods 4, including its ANC version. Those who prefer over-ear comfort can look at AirPods Max.
What Apple has not announced
- No official successor date.
- No confirmed “AirPods Pro 4” name.
- No confirmed camera hardware.
- No confirmed AI feature set or spatial-computing integration.
- No confirmed price, battery-life rating, or release window.
- No confirmation that a premium model would replace or coexist with AirPods Pro 3.
