Short answer: Apple’s claim is genuine, but narrower than the headline suggests. Apple says AirPods Pro 3 deliver the “world’s best in-ear Active Noise Cancellation,” based on company testing in July 2025. That is not an independently certified, permanent ranking of every headphone. Independent reviews have nevertheless described the earbuds’ ANC as exceptionally strong, especially against aircraft and transit rumble.
What Apple actually claims
Apple’s wording has three important limits:
- “World’s best” is Apple’s superlative, not a finding from an independent certification body.
- “In-ear” excludes over-ear headphones such as AirPods Max, Sony WH-series models and Bose QuietComfort headphones.
- “Active Noise Cancellation” refers to electronic reduction of outside sound, not total silence or complete sound isolation.
Apple also says AirPods Pro 3 provide up to twice as much ANC as AirPods Pro 2 and up to four times as much noise removal as the original AirPods Pro. “Up to” describes a maximum result, not what every wearer will experience in every environment. Apple’s public wording does not provide enough information to convert those multipliers into a specific decibel improvement.

How Apple tested the claim
Apple says it conducted the comparison in July 2025. AirPods Pro 3 were paired with an iPhone 16, using prerelease AirPods firmware and iOS 26. Noise reduction was tested according to IEC 60268-24, against the best-selling commercially available wireless in-ear headphones at that time.

That establishes a defined test scope, but not a fully reproducible public leaderboard. Apple has not disclosed the complete competitor list, sample count, room and noise setup, whether competing earbuds used default or maximum ANC, frequency-by-frequency results, raw attenuation figures, or how fit was standardized. It also does not explain precisely what measurement Apple’s “2× more effective” wording represents.

The fairest conclusion is therefore: Apple claims AirPods Pro 3 had the best ANC among in-ear wireless headphones in Apple’s July 2025 comparison. It should not be rewritten as “independent testing proves they are the best headphones available.” Products, firmware and competitors can change after that test.
What ANC can—and cannot—do
Microphones monitor external sound, the earbuds generate an inverse waveform, and the resulting interference reduces the perceived level of some noise. The ear tips also provide passive isolation. Real-world performance is a system result involving microphones, signal processing, acoustics, ear anatomy and the seal.
ANC is generally most consistent against continuous, low-frequency sounds such as aircraft engines, trains, buses, subways and HVAC systems. It is less absolute against sudden noises, nearby voices, clattering dishes, alarms and wind turbulence. Human speech is irregular and broadband, so some voices can remain audible even when background rumble is heavily reduced. No consumer ANC earbud creates universal silence.

Why AirPods Pro 3 may cancel more noise
Apple attributes the improvement to several changes working together:
- Ultra-low-noise microphones and computational audio.
- A new multiport acoustic architecture with more precise airflow control.
- New foam-infused ear tips intended to improve sealing.
- A redesigned fit for greater stability and passive isolation.
Apple’s specifications list the H2 chip, dual beamforming microphones, an inward-facing microphone, Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode, Adaptive EQ and a pressure-equalizing vent system. The result cannot be credited to the H2 chip alone: ANC depends on the complete acoustic, microphone, DSP, software and fit system. Apple’s technical specifications provide the hardware details.
What it feels like in daily use
Independent reviews broadly support the view that AirPods Pro 3 have unusually powerful ANC. TechRadar reported a substantial improvement, while What Hi-Fi described stronger suppression of aircraft-engine rumble and general chatter than with AirPods Pro 2. Those are expert listening evaluations, not substitutes for the undisclosed laboratory data behind Apple’s comparison.

- LONG BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 5 hours of listening time on a single charge. And get up to 30 hours of total listening time using the case.*
- Airplanes and trains: This is the scenario most closely aligned with Apple’s claim and the one in which low-frequency ANC is usually most effective.
- Offices and cafés: HVAC noise and steady background sound should be reduced, but conversations will not disappear.
- Outdoor exercise: Wind around microphones and changing fit can reduce the benefit.
- Announcements: Transparency and adaptive modes may be more useful than maximum cancellation when you need awareness.
Fit is the deciding variable
A controlled comparison cannot guarantee the best result for every ear. A tip that is too small, incomplete insertion, ear-canal shape, movement, hair, glasses or a hat can break the seal. Foam-infused tips may work exceptionally well for one person and feel uncomfortable or inconsistent for another.
Try every supplied tip size and use Apple’s fit-check process where available. If the earbuds shift during walking or exercise, a theoretically superior ANC system can perform worse for you than a less ambitious model that seals reliably. Fit also affects comfort: pressure, ear fatigue and irritation are valid reasons to choose a different design.
AirPods Pro 3 versus AirPods Pro 2
Apple’s published comparison is “up to 2× more effective ANC,” not a guaranteed twofold improvement in decibels. The practical upgrade is most compelling when you regularly travel, commute or work in noisy spaces and also value the revised fit, newer features and stronger reported suppression. Owners of AirPods Pro 2 who are satisfied with their current ANC may not see enough benefit to justify a full-price replacement.

Features beyond cancellation
AirPods Pro 3 add or support heart-rate sensing during workouts, tracking for more than 50 workout types through the iPhone Fitness experience, improved stability, IP57 dust/sweat/water resistance for the earbuds and case, and up to eight hours of listening with ANC enabled on one charge. Live Translation and hearing functions—including Hearing Test, Hearing Aid and Hearing Protection—depend on compatible hardware, software, languages and regulatory authorization.
Apple says full functionality requires an Apple device running the latest operating-system software. Basic Bluetooth audio may work with Android, but Apple-specific controls and features should not be assumed to transfer fully. Apple’s U.S. store lists AirPods Pro 3 at $249, with up to eight hours of ANC listening per charge. That is a premium price for true-wireless earbuds.

They are good value for:
- iPhone users who want top-tier in-ear ANC.
- Frequent air travelers and commuters.
- People who value excellent Transparency mode and Apple integration.
- Users interested in supported workout, translation or hearing features.
They are less compelling for:
- Android-first buyers who do not need Apple features.
- AirPods Pro 2 owners already happy with cancellation and fit.
- People prioritizing the longest battery life or broad multipoint controls.
- Anyone who dislikes sealing silicone or foam-style tips.
Eight hours is strong for premium in-ear earbuds, but less than many over-ear ANC headphones. Consider per-charge life separately from total case life, and remember that calls, workouts and other modes can change endurance.
Alternatives by need
- AirPods 4 with ANC: A less-sealing, potentially lower-cost Apple option for people who dislike Pro-style tips; expect less passive isolation and a less complete feature set. Apple’s AirPods lineup.
- AirPods Pro 2: Sensible if discounted substantially and their fit and ANC already meet your needs.
- Sony WF-1000XM5: A credible cross-platform choice with app customization; verify current successor, firmware and pricing at purchase. Sony.
- Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds: Worth considering for Bose’s noise-cancellation approach and comfort preferences, though ecosystem and case priorities differ. Bose.
- Over-ear ANC: Larger headphones may offer longer battery life and greater physical isolation, but they are less pocketable. Apple’s “world’s best” claim does not include them.
Do they replace hearing protection?
No. ANC is not a substitute for properly rated protection in construction areas, industrial workplaces, shooting environments or around dangerous machinery. Follow applicable safety rules and use approved protection. AirPods’ Hearing Protection and Hearing Aid functions have their own settings, battery, fit, regulatory and regional limitations; Hearing Aid is intended for perceived mild to moderate hearing loss where authorized.
Bottom line
AirPods Pro 3 appear to be among the strongest noise-cancelling in-ear earbuds available, and Apple’s July 2025 test supports its claim within a clearly defined scope. The evidence does not establish an independently verified, permanent “best headphones” ranking. For an iPhone owner who wants maximum pocketable ANC and a stable seal, $249 is defensible. For Android users, satisfied AirPods Pro 2 owners, people who dislike sealing tips or anyone needing occupational protection, the headline alone is not a reason to buy.
