The pre-release rumor was only half right. AirPods Pro 3 launched on September 9, 2025, with a heart-rate sensor for workouts. Apple’s official specifications do not list a temperature sensor, so temperature tracking is not a confirmed feature of the released earbuds.

What happened to the two-sensor rumor?

Before launch, rumor coverage said AirPods Pro 3 might add two health sensors: one for heart rate and one for temperature. The claim was not an Apple announcement, and the evidence for the two features was uneven. Heart-rate sensing had some context in Apple’s broader earbud-health work and in the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2. Temperature sensing was a more speculative report attributed to an anonymous source. The pre-launch report is useful for understanding the rumor, but Apple’s later product information is the authority on what shipped.

Apple announced AirPods Pro 3 on September 9, 2025. The released model includes workout heart-rate sensing; its official sensor list does not include a temperature sensor. The careful conclusion is that the rumored temperature feature has not been confirmed for AirPods Pro 3 and is absent from the current published specifications—not that Apple never experimented with the idea.

How AirPods Pro 3 measure heart rate

Apple describes a custom photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor that uses invisible infrared light, pulsed 256 times per second, to detect changes in light absorption associated with blood flow. The earbuds combine that signal with motion and other data to calculate workout metrics. Apple says the feature supports as many as 50 workout types. Apple’s launch announcement describes the sensor and workout integration.

This is workout-oriented sensing, not a promise of continuous, all-day heart monitoring. Apple’s technical wording calls it a “heart rate sensor for workouts.” Heart-rate data can be used by the Fitness app, Apple Fitness+, and compatible third-party fitness apps on iPhone or iPad. The built-in workout monitor requires an iPhone running iOS 26 or later; check the individual app for support and requirements. Apple’s compatibility guidance covers the operating-system requirement.

AirPods can contribute heart-rate and motion information to workout calculations, including calories, steps, and distance. Apple’s support guide says relevant information already stored in Health—such as age, sex, height, and weight—may also be used. The data can reach an iPhone during a workout even if the earbuds are connected to another Apple device, such as Apple TV 4K. If an Apple Watch is also being worn, Apple says the devices can provide multiple streams and the system uses the source it considers highest confidence at that moment. See Apple’s guide to tracking heart rate during workouts for details.

What a temperature sensor might have offered—and what it does not offer now

Temperature sensing in an earbud was an intriguing rumor because the ear canal offers close contact with the body. In principle, temperature trends might add context to wellness, exercise recovery, menstrual-cycle estimates, or possible illness. Those are hypothetical applications, not AirPods Pro 3 features. Measuring temperature at the ear also would not automatically provide a clinically meaningful core-body temperature.

There is no reliable basis for saying AirPods Pro 3 measure body temperature. Apple does not advertise that capability or list a temperature sensor in the released model’s specifications. Buyers interested specifically in temperature tracking should not purchase these earbuds expecting it.

Not a medical monitor—and not an Apple Watch replacement

Apple’s safety information says AirPods and their heart-rate sensor are not medical devices. Workout readings can help with exercise context; they are not for diagnosing heart conditions, detecting heart attacks, or replacing clinical monitoring. They also do not turn the earbuds into a device for medical-grade temperature readings. Anyone with symptoms or medical concerns should use an appropriate medical device and seek professional advice. Apple’s safety documentation explains the limitation.

For an Apple user who already exercises with earbuds, AirPods Pro 3 can be a convenient way to add heart-rate data without putting on a watch. But an Apple Watch remains the more complete wearable for people who want a wrist display, broader activity and health tracking, standalone workout functions, and watch notifications. AirPods Pro 3 are best viewed as a workout convenience or supplement, not a substitute for an Apple Watch or dedicated medical equipment.

How this fits with AirPods Pro 2 and hearing health

AirPods Pro 2 expanded into hearing health with features such as Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, Hearing Protection, and Loud Sound Reduction. AirPods Pro 3 continue that direction, but hearing features are distinct from physiological sensors: hearing tools address sound and hearing-related needs, while the heart-rate sensor measures a workout signal. Neither category implies that the earbuds measure temperature. Availability of regulated hearing features can vary by region and authorization; it should not be assumed that every health-related feature is available everywhere.

For AirPods Pro 2 owners, the heart-rate sensor is one reason to consider the newer model, not an automatic upgrade case. AirPods Pro 3 also bring changes such as fit, noise cancellation, and Live Translation, so weigh the full feature set against what you already own. The sensor is most relevant if you work out with earbuds and will use Fitness or a compatible app. If you already rely on an Apple Watch for exercise data, or wanted temperature tracking, the new sensor alone is a weaker reason to switch.

Fit, compatibility, and practical limits

  • Use a compatible iPhone and current software: the built-in workout heart-rate monitor requires iOS 26 or later. Third-party apps must explicitly support the feature, and app behavior may differ.
  • Get a secure fit: Apple recommends a proper fit for the best heart-rate experience. Loose earbuds, movement, sweat, or wearing only one earbud may affect readings or whether data appears. AirPods Pro 3 come with five ear-tip sizes, including XXS, to help with fit and stability.
  • Expect workout use, not unrestricted monitoring: the official feature is designed around supported workouts. A sensor being present does not guarantee continuous tracking, direct access to raw data, or universal app integration.
  • Keep regional availability in mind: hearing-health functions have separate regulatory and geographic limits. Do not infer their availability from the availability of workout heart-rate sensing.

Should you buy AirPods Pro 3 for health tracking?

Apple lists AirPods Pro 3 at $249 in the United States; local prices and availability differ. They make the most sense for iPhone users who already want premium earbuds and would value workout heart-rate data as part of that purchase. Apple’s U.S. store also advertises up to eight hours of listening with Active Noise Cancellation and a three-month Apple Fitness+ offer with purchase, subject to terms. Fitness+ is not required for every heart-rate use case: Apple’s Fitness app and compatible third-party apps are also options. Check the Apple Store listing for current regional details and offer terms.

Choose another kind of device if your priority is broader health tracking or a display (consider a watch), dedicated training measurement (consider a purpose-built sensor), or medical monitoring (use an appropriate medical device). AirPods Pro 3’s heart-rate sensor is an extra for workouts, not a complete health platform. The strongest purchase reason remains the combination of audio, Apple integration, and workout convenience—not the rumored pair of sensors.
