Alibaba did launch AI glasses intended to compete in the same category as Meta’s smart eyewear, but $660 is not clearly the Quark S1’s confirmed standard retail price. At its November 2025 China launch, the display-equipped Quark S1 was reported at ¥3,799 (about $537 at the exchange rate used in coverage), while the display-free Quark G1 started at ¥1,899 (about $277). The roughly $660 figure was associated with an earlier ¥4,699 pre-sale or listing price. The practical caveat for buyers outside China is just as important: the original Quark range was launched for the mainland Chinese market, with key features tied to Alibaba services.
What Alibaba launched
Alibaba previewed Quark AI Glasses in July 2025 and launched the range in China on November 27, 2025. It was a two-model family, not a single pair: the Quark S1 has a small display, while the lighter Quark G1 does not. Launch prices reported by South China Morning Post were ¥3,799 for the S1 and from ¥1,899 for the G1.
Alibaba built the proposition around its Quark assistant and Qwen AI, as well as its Chinese consumer services. That makes the product more than a hardware comparison with Meta: the usefulness of shopping lookup, maps, payments, translation, and other functions depends on the services and accounts available to the wearer.

These are reported launch prices and approximate dollar conversions, not guaranteed current prices in another country. The S1 is the relevant Quark model if a display matters; comparing the G1 with a display-equipped Meta model would blur a meaningful difference.

Why some headlines say $660
The $660 figure corresponds to a reported ¥4,699 pre-sale or early listing. The available reporting does not establish that as the Quark S1’s final standard retail price. Later launch coverage put the S1 at ¥3,799. The fairest way to describe the price is therefore to give the yuan launch figure first and identify $660 as an earlier reported price—not as the settled price of every Quark pair.
Dollar equivalents vary with exchange rates and do not include possible import costs, taxes, shipping, or warranty differences. An early listing, a mainland China launch price, and an official price in a buyer’s home market are not interchangeable.
What the glasses are reported to do

- Translation and transcription: Alibaba promoted translation and meeting-transcription functions. These are announced capabilities, not independently verified performance results.
- First-person photos and video: cameras can capture what the wearer sees.
- Shopping and price lookup: Taobao-linked recognition can connect an item to product information or prices.
- Navigation and service integrations: launch coverage described mapping and Alibaba-service functions, including Alipay-related payment capabilities.
- On-glasses prompts: the S1’s monochrome display can show information without requiring the wearer to look at a phone for every interaction.
Reported S1 specifications include a Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 processor alongside a low-power coprocessor, bone-conduction microphones, and removable or swappable batteries. Launch reporting cited a battery rating of up to 24 hours. That is a stated rating, not a real-world endurance test: camera recording, display use, wireless connections, and cloud AI requests can all affect runtime. Reporting also described the S1 display as reaching up to 4,000 nits, but that number alone does not establish how readable it is in direct sunlight or how comfortable it is over long periods.
The available evidence supports describing these as announced or reported functions and specifications. It does not establish independent testing of battery life, translation accuracy, display visibility, or everyday comfort. Nor does it fully resolve which functions work offline, what requires a phone or mainland account, or how the glasses handle data in every use case.
How Quark compares with Meta
Alibaba is a competitor in the smart-glasses category, but the comparison depends on the model. Meta’s camera-and-audio Ray-Ban glasses do not have the same built-in display proposition as the Quark S1. Meta has also offered display-equipped eyewear, so a fair comparison should match display to display and camera/audio to camera/audio. Meta’s product lineup and pricing have changed; an older comparison with a single high-priced display model is not a current comparison of the whole range.

Quark’s clearest strategic advantage is its integration with Alibaba services in China, not evidence that it has surpassed Meta. Meta’s practical advantage for many international buyers is a more established retail and support footprint. A smart-glasses display also does not automatically make a product a full augmented-reality headset: the reported Quark specifications do not establish rich spatial anchoring, field of view, or the kind of persistent overlays associated with more capable AR systems.
What buyers outside China should know
The Quark launch was China-first. A buyer importing a pair should not assume the experience will match a Chinese launch demonstration. Before considering an import, verify directly with the seller or manufacturer:
- Whether the model and companion app are officially supported in your country, and whether setup requires a mainland Chinese account or app-store access.
- Which languages are supported across voice control, translation, transcription, and visual AI—not just in a demonstration.
- Whether Taobao, Alipay, maps, and other integrations work with your region, accounts, and payment methods.
- Whether the glasses can perform useful functions without a connection to Alibaba’s services, and what requires cloud access.
- What warranty, returns, firmware updates, replacement batteries, and repair service are available where you live.
- Whether prescription lenses, fitting options, and relevant local certifications are available for the exact model.
Those are purchase checks, not confirmed defects. The available launch information does not settle each point for international owners. For a U.S. buyer seeking a supported, plug-and-play purchase, an unofficial import is not equivalent to an official local release. Compare current models and support through Meta’s official smart-glasses information and Ray-Ban’s official site rather than relying on an old price comparison.

Quark branding and the later Qwen name
Alibaba’s eyewear branding evolved after the Quark launch. In February 2026, the company made another Qwen-powered glasses push, and its current corporate description refers to Qwen AI Glasses. Alibaba describes those newer glasses with features such as point-of-view recording, spatial 3D display, proactive services, voice cloning, and simultaneous interpretation, and calls them its first fully self-developed smart wearable. Those corporate claims concern the later Qwen-branded product description; they should not automatically be read as specifications of the original Quark S1 or G1. Privacy is part of the buying decision
Like other camera-equipped glasses, Quark raises ordinary but important questions about recording people nearby and about where voice, image, location, and purchase-related data go. The available source material does not establish all the details buyers need: camera-indicator behavior, physical microphone controls, cloud versus on-device processing by feature, retention and deletion policies, or which third-party services receive data. Check the product’s current privacy documentation and controls before recording or enabling cloud features. Follow local recording and consent laws, and be considerate in shared spaces.

It makes the most sense for a buyer in mainland China who already uses Alibaba services, wants hands-free AI linked to that ecosystem, and specifically values the S1’s display—or prefers the simpler, display-free G1. The S1’s screen and the G1’s lighter reported weight serve different priorities; neither is automatically the better everyday pair.

Most buyers elsewhere should wait for confirmed local availability or choose a locally supported alternative. Language coverage, account and service access, warranty, prescription options, and data handling can matter more than headline specifications. If you are interested mainly in an on-glasses display, compare display-equipped products directly; if you want only camera and audio features, compare against display-free models. In either case, compare exact models and current regional prices, not brand names or an isolated $660 figure.
Alibaba’s Quark launch was a genuine entry into the smart-glasses race. The headline price needs qualification, and the strongest case for the glasses is their China-focused AI and service integration—not a demonstrated universal win over Meta.
