Alibaba’s Quark AI Glasses are built around a practical idea: replaceable batteries may be a better answer to smart glasses’ short runtime than simply fitting a slightly larger sealed cell into a glasses-sized frame. Launched in China in late November 2025, the lineup includes the display-equipped Quark S1, from ¥3,799, and the display-free Quark G1, from ¥1,899.
Both models reportedly combine cameras, bone-conduction microphones, Qwen AI and a swappable dual-battery system that Alibaba says can provide up to 24 hours of use. That is a company claim, not an independently verified continuous-use result. The more important story is Alibaba’s attempt to make glasses a hands-free gateway to Qwen, Taobao, Alipay, mapping and other Chinese consumer services.
What Alibaba launched
The Quark range has two distinctly different products rather than one flagship and one slightly cheaper variant:

Launch-period reports say both models include cameras, bone-conduction microphones, touch controls and the claimed swappable dual-battery system. The S1 also adds transparent micro-OLED displays. The G1’s lack of a display puts it closer to camera-and-assistant glasses than to conventional augmented-reality eyewear.
Alibaba reported sales through Chinese platforms including Tmall, JD.com and Douyin, alongside a rollout through 604 partner optical stores in 82 Chinese cities. International availability was not clearly established in the available official information.
Launch-period reporting also described the glasses as a lower-cost Chinese alternative to Meta’s AI glasses. That comparison is useful, but it should not be read as proof that Quark has already displaced Meta in market share, distribution or product maturity.
Why removable batteries matter
Smart glasses have to fit batteries, cameras, microphones, processors, wireless radios and—on the S1—display hardware into a frame small enough to wear. That leaves less room for energy storage than a phone or smartwatch has.

With a sealed battery, the user generally has three options when power runs low: recharge the glasses, connect a power bank or stop using them.
A genuinely user-replaceable battery changes that trade-off. A wearer could carry a charged module and resume use without waiting for the glasses to recharge. For people using glasses for navigation, translation, recording or long workdays, that may be more valuable than a modest increase in sealed capacity.
However, the available evidence supports only the basic claim that Alibaba uses a swappable dual-battery system. It does not establish that Alibaba invented the approach, that it is the most efficient design or that it is better in real-world use.

What is known—and unknown—about the battery system
Alibaba says the system can provide up to 24 hours of use. The wording matters: this is not the same as saying the glasses run continuously for 24 hours under camera, display and AI-heavy workloads.

The available reporting does not specify:
- Whether each temple contains a removable battery.
- Whether the two batteries can be replaced independently.
- Whether the glasses work with only one battery installed.
- Whether swapping requires powering down or interrupts recording, calls or AI sessions.
- Whether the batteries are hot-swappable.
- Battery capacity, charging time, connector or cycle life.
- Whether spare batteries and a dedicated charging case are sold separately.
- Replacement-battery pricing or availability outside China.
Those omissions are central to the buying decision. A removable module is useful only if it is easy to change, safe to carry, reasonably priced and available when the original battery degrades. Frequent removal could also wear contacts, latches or seals, while mismatched battery ageing could create imbalance between the two sides of the frame.
For the “up to 24 hours” figure to be meaningful, buyers would need test conditions covering camera use, display brightness and usage on the S1, AI-query frequency, music playback, phone connectivity, temperature and standby time. It is also important to know whether the figure includes replacing a depleted module with a charged spare.
What the Quark glasses can do
Alibaba positions Quark around its Qwen AI models and consumer-facing Qwen app. Reported functions include:
- Voice interaction with Qwen.
- Real-time or on-the-go translation.
- Meeting transcription and summaries.
- Navigation assistance.
- Product recognition and Taobao price lookup.
- Alipay-related services.
- Photo and video capture.
- Music playback through Chinese services including QQ Music and NetEase Cloud Music.
These capabilities should be separated into three layers. The camera, microphones, display and processor are hardware capabilities. Translation, transcription and recognition are software features. Taobao, Alipay, maps and music are ecosystem integrations. A feature can exist in the product announcement without being equally useful in every country, language or account configuration.
For example, recognizing an object and checking its Taobao price could be compelling for someone shopping in mainland China. It may be far less useful elsewhere if the result is tied to Chinese listings, accounts or payment services. Similarly, translation and transcription may depend on a smartphone, an internet connection and cloud services rather than operating fully offline.

S1 versus G1: which category do you want?
Choose the Quark S1 for visual information
The S1 is the model for readers who want a display as well as camera and voice AI. Its clear micro-OLED displays are reported to use a monochrome green presentation. That suggests an information overlay for prompts, notifications, translation or navigation—not a full-color, smartphone-like screen.
The available coverage does not establish the S1’s resolution, field of view, brightness, outdoor readability, monocular or binocular arrangement, prescription-lens options or the battery penalty from display use. It should therefore not be described as a complete substitute for full augmented-reality glasses.
Choose the Quark G1 for a simpler audio-first design
The G1 removes the display, reducing the product’s visual ambitions and potentially its weight and power demands. It is better understood as camera-and-voice AI glasses: information is delivered through audio or a connected phone, while the camera enables visual recognition and capture.

The G1 may make more sense for users who want voice assistance, translation, music and image recognition without looking through a lens display. It is the wrong choice for anyone who specifically wants visual navigation or in-lens text.
Alibaba’s real differentiation is its ecosystem
Optics and industrial design matter, but Alibaba’s strongest potential advantage is service integration. Quark can place Qwen closer to physical-world interactions: identify an item, ask about it, find a price, receive directions or access a consumer service without reaching for a phone.
Alibaba’s consumer-AI push gives this strategy a broader context. The company said its Qwen app exceeded 10 million downloads in its first week of public beta, and its official materials describe plans to connect Qwen with maps, commerce, travel, office tools and other daily-life services.

That makes Quark more than a hardware experiment. The glasses could become an always-available interface for Alibaba’s services and a way to increase the frequency of hands-free interactions with shopping, payments, maps and information retrieval. The limitation is geographic: those integrations may be a major advantage in China and a much smaller one for an international buyer.

Alibaba later described “agent glasses” at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in July 2026 as an evolution of its AI-glasses platform, with planned capabilities including third-party skills and AI agents, full-duplex voice interaction, eye tracking and biometric sensing. Those plans show a continuing wearable-AI strategy, but they do not prove that every announced feature is present on the original Quark S1 or G1.

Meta’s advantage is familiarity, retail reach and a more established international consumer channel. Alibaba’s argument is different: a potentially more service-rich Chinese ecosystem and a battery architecture intended to reduce downtime. Neither product wins on the available information alone. Runtime under real workloads, comfort, privacy controls, software quality and replacement-part logistics matter more than a launch specification.
Readers should also avoid using an isolated reported price for a newer Meta model without checking the exact model, market and date. Smart-glasses pricing and availability vary by country and edition.

Quark enters a busy Chinese market. Launch-period reporting cited Xiaomi at about ¥1,999, Baidu’s Xiaodu AI Glasses Pro at about ¥2,299 and a lightweight Rokid model from about ¥2,199 in partnership with Bolon. Xreal is active in display-equipped spatial-computing hardware.
Those figures are best treated as launch-period signals, not current prices. Model names, configurations, promotions and availability can change. The broad pattern is more useful: Xiaomi and Baidu compete through domestic hardware and AI ecosystems, Rokid and Xreal are more relevant to display or AR experiences, while Alibaba is emphasizing Qwen plus commerce, payments and a claimed replaceable-battery design.

Can you buy Quark glasses outside China?
At launch, Quark was a China-market product. International models were reported as possible for 2026, but the available information did not clearly identify supported countries or establish an official US purchase route.
International buyers should not assume that an imported unit will provide the same experience. Before purchasing, verify:
- Official regional availability and warranty coverage.
- English or other desired language support.
- Whether the companion app works with the local phone and app store.
- Whether Qwen features require a mainland-China account or network access.
- Whether Taobao, Alipay and navigation functions work outside China.
- Where replacement batteries can be ordered.
- Prescription-lens compatibility and optical fitting support.
- Return procedures, import duties and repair options.
An unofficial marketplace listing may solve the first purchase but not the long-term ownership problem. A China-first wearable can become difficult to use if firmware updates, cloud features, account registration or replacement parts depend on Chinese channels.
Privacy, recording and legal concerns
Quark includes cameras and microphones, so privacy is not a secondary issue. Users need to know how recording is signalled, where photos, video, voice recordings and transcripts are stored, how long they are retained, whether data is sent to Alibaba or Qwen cloud services, and which controls allow deletion or disable cloud processing.
The available product reporting does not establish those details, nor does it establish compliance with every country’s privacy rules. Recording laws differ across jurisdictions, including rules on consent for audio recording. Workplaces, schools, retailers and public venues may prohibit camera-equipped glasses even when recording is technically legal. A visible camera also does not automatically make recording socially acceptable.
International buyers should treat account, app, cloud and data-handling arrangements as product specifications to verify—not assumptions to make after purchase.
Who should consider Quark?
- Potentially good fit: users in China who already rely on Taobao, Alipay, Qwen and Alibaba’s mapping or media services; early adopters who value replaceable batteries; and buyers choosing between visual S1 assistance and audio-first G1 functionality.
- Proceed cautiously: users importing into another country, requiring English-language support, needing prescription lenses, or depending on reliable replacement batteries and warranty service.
- Poor fit: buyers seeking full augmented reality, a large virtual screen, guaranteed all-day continuous camera use, or a product with clearly documented global privacy and support arrangements.
What would determine whether the idea succeeds?
The removable-battery concept addresses a genuine weakness in smart glasses, but its value depends on execution. The decisive questions are whether the batteries are genuinely user-serviceable, how much runtime remains during AI- and camera-heavy use, whether swapping interrupts sessions, and whether spare modules are affordable and available.
The software must also be dependable. AI responses can be delayed by network conditions; translation and transcription may be weaker offline; bone-conduction microphones may struggle in wind or crowds; and product recognition may be limited to Chinese marketplace data. On the hardware side, buyers need evidence on heat, temple thickness, frame weight, water resistance, hinge durability and prescription compatibility.
Alibaba’s later agent-glasses announcement indicates that Quark is part of a broader platform ambition. The company is trying to make Qwen an interface to the physical world, not merely sell another pair of connected glasses. Whether that becomes a durable advantage will depend on sustained software support and usefulness beyond Alibaba’s home market.
