For most iPhone owners, AirPods Pro 3 are the best all-round choice. Choose the less expensive AirPods 4 if you want simple open-fit earbuds, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) if you dislike silicone tips but still want noise control, and AirPods Max 2 if you specifically want immersive over-ear headphones and USB-C lossless audio. The decisive question is fit—not the H2 chip shared by all four current models.
Apple’s current US lineup and visible prices (checked August 17, 2026) are AirPods 4 at a price that should be verified on the live buying page, AirPods 4 ANC at $179, AirPods Pro 3 at $249 and AirPods Max 2 at $549. Prices, stock and regional availability can change.
The current AirPods lineup at a glance

| AirPods 4 with ANC | Open-fit earbuds | ANC without silicone tips | $179 |
| AirPods Pro 3 | In-ear earbuds with silicone tips | Best overall ANC, hearing and fitness feature set | $249 |
| AirPods Max 2 | Over-ear headphones | Immersive listening, physical controls and wired USB-C audio | $549 |
Apple’s comparison page still shows older AirPods Pro 2, first-generation AirPods Max, AirPods 2 and AirPods 3 for reference. They may remain available from retailers or refurbished sellers, but they are not the principal current Apple lineup.

Fit matters more than the feature checklist
AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 ANC: open fit
Both AirPods 4 versions sit at the entrance of the ear and have no silicone tip. They are quick to insert, leave you naturally aware of nearby sounds and avoid the plugged-up sensation some people experience with in-ear buds. The trade-off is variable security and less passive isolation. ANC can reduce noise, but it cannot create the same physical seal as a well-fitted Pro 3.
#1 Best Overall
- REBUILT FOR COMFORT — AirPods 4 have been redesigned for exceptional all-day comfort and greater stability. With a refined contour, shorter stem, and quick-press controls for music or calls.
- PERSONALIZED SPATIAL AUDIO — Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking places sound all around you, creating a theater-like listening experience for music, TV shows, movies, games, and more.*
- IMPROVED SOUND AND CALL QUALITY — AirPods 4 feature the Apple-designed H2 chip. Voice Isolation improves the quality of phone calls in loud conditions. Using advanced computational audio, it reduces background noise while isolating and clarifying the sound of your voice for whomever you’re speaking to.*
- MAGICAL EXPERIENCE — Just say “Siri” or “Hey Siri” to play a song, make a call, or check your schedule.* And with Siri Interactions, now you can respond to Siri by simply nodding your head yes or shaking your head no.* Pair AirPods 4 by simply placing them near your device and tapping Connect on your screen.* Easily share a song or show between two sets of AirPods.* An optical in-ear sensor knows to play audio only when you’re wearing AirPods and pauses when you take them off. And you can track down your AirPods and Charging Case with the Find My app.*
- LONG BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 5 hours of listening time on a single charge. And get up to 30 hours of total listening time using the case.*
AirPods Pro 3: sealed in-ear fit
Pro 3 uses interchangeable silicone tips. A correct tip improves bass, passive isolation and ANC, and may keep the buds secure during exercise. The same seal can feel uncomfortable or create occlusion for some ears. No tip size works universally, so comfort should be treated as a personal fit question rather than a guaranteed advantage.
AirPods Max 2: over-ear
Max 2 surrounds the ear instead of sitting in it. That avoids ear-canal pressure and provides the most immersive physical presentation, but it weighs 386.2 grams and is far less pocketable. It is better for a desk, home, flight or commute than running, gym sessions or hot weather.
What each model is really for
AirPods 4
AirPods 4 are the straightforward choice for calls, podcasts and casual music in quiet or moderately noisy places. They have the H2 chip and Personalized Spatial Audio, but no ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode or Conversation Awareness. The standard charging case uses USB-C and does not wirelessly charge.
Buy them when you value a light, non-sealing fit and the lowest current Apple entry price more than isolation or advanced sensors. Do not buy them expecting a commuter or aircraft solution.
AirPods 4 with ANC
This version adds ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode and Conversation Awareness while keeping the open fit. Its case supports USB-C, Apple Watch charging and Qi charging, and includes a Find My speaker. It also supports Apple’s Live Translation feature when all software and hardware requirements are met.
It is the best non-sealing option. Its central compromise is unavoidable: open-fit ANC generally cannot isolate as completely as Pro 3. It also lacks Pro 3’s hearing-health functions and heart-rate sensor.
Rank #2
- WORLD’S BEST IN-EAR ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — Removes up to 2x more unwanted noise than AirPods Pro 2* so you can stay fully immersed in the moment.*
- BREAKTHROUGH AUDIO PERFORMANCE — Experience breathtaking, three-dimensional audio with AirPods Pro 3. A new acoustic architecture delivers transformed bass, detailed clarity so you can hear every instrument, and stunningly vivid vocals.
- HEART RATE SENSING — Built-in heart rate sensing lets you track your heart rate and calories burned for up to 50 different workout types.* With iPhone, you will have access to the Move ring, step count, and the new Workout Buddy,* powered by Apple Intelligence.*
- LIVE TRANSLATION — Communicate across language barriers using Live Translation,* enabled by Apple Intelligence.*
- EXTENDED BATTERY LIFE — Get up to 8 hours of listening time with Active Noise Cancellation on a single charge. Or up to 10 hours in Transparency using the Hearing Aid feature.*
AirPods Pro 3
Pro 3 is the recommendation for most buyers who accept silicone tips. It combines the strongest current in-ear noise-control design in Apple’s range with Transparency mode, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, hearing features, heart-rate sensing and a longer rated earbud battery life.
Apple says Pro 3 delivers up to four times the ANC of the original AirPods Pro and AirPods 4 ANC. That is an Apple comparison under specified test conditions, not an independent universal measurement. Actual results depend on fit, ear shape, wind and the type of noise.
The Pro 3 and its case are rated IP57 for dust, sweat and water resistance. IP57 is not a swimming or waterproof rating. For workouts, however, Pro 3 is the clear choice among these four because it combines secure in-ear fit, the sensor and the highest stated resistance rating.
AirPods Max 2
Max 2 is a different category, not simply a larger Pro. It offers ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode, Conversation Awareness, physical controls and a large over-ear presentation. It supports lossless and ultra-low-latency audio over USB-C, plus studio-oriented recording features listed by Apple.
Lossless is available through a wired USB-C connection with compatible hardware, software and content; it is not lossless playback over ordinary Bluetooth. The headphones provide up to 20 hours of listening with ANC, and Apple says a five-minute charge provides about 1.5 hours. Their Smart Case places them in a low-power state. Weight, heat, carrying size and the lack of sports-oriented water resistance are the costs of the over-ear design.
ANC and listening modes
| Feature | AirPods 4 | AirPods 4 ANC | AirPods Pro 3 | AirPods Max 2 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ANC | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Adaptive Audio | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Transparency mode | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Conversation Awareness | No | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Personalized Spatial Audio | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
ANC is noise reduction, not a guarantee of better sound quality. Low, steady sounds are usually easier to reduce than voices, sudden impacts or wind. Seal, placement and personal hearing have a major effect. Spatial Audio is a presentation and processing feature; it does not automatically make a recording higher fidelity.
Rank #3
- REBUILT FOR COMFORT — AirPods 4 have been redesigned for exceptional all-day comfort and greater stability. With a refined contour, shorter stem, and quick-press controls for music or calls.
- ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation help reduce outside noise before it reaches your ears, so you can immerse yourself in what you’re listening to.*
- HEAR THE WORLD AROUND YOU — The powerful H2 chip comes to AirPods 4. Adaptive Audio seamlessly blends ANC and Transparency mode — which lets you comfortably hear and interact with the world around you exactly as it sounds — to provide the best listening experience in any environment.* And when you’re speaking with someone nearby, Conversation Awareness automatically lowers the volume of what’s playing.*
- IMPROVED SOUND AND CALL QUALITY — Voice Isolation improves the quality of calls in loud conditions.
Hearing and accessibility
Pro 3 has the largest feature gap over the other models. Apple lists Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, Hearing Protection, Loud Sound Reduction, Live Listen and Headphone Accommodations. Availability depends on country, age, device, software, firmware and regulatory authorization. These features are not a substitute for an examination or advice from a qualified hearing professional.
Apple’s current comparison information does not list Hearing Test, Hearing Aid or Hearing Protection for AirPods 4 or AirPods 4 ANC. Max 2 supports accessibility options such as Live Listen, Headphone Levels and Headphone Accommodations, but it should not be presented as having Pro 3’s hearing-aid feature set.
Fitness and water use
Pro 3 includes a heart-rate sensor intended for the Fitness app and compatible third-party apps on an iPhone running iOS 26 or later. No other current AirPods model has that sensor. Pro 3’s IP57 rating covers dust and exposure to sweat and water, but none of these products should be recommended for swimming.

AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 ANC should not be assumed to have the same resistance rating unless their current technical specification confirms it. Max 2 is an over-ear lifestyle headphone, not a workout headset; its weight and heat make it a poor running or gym choice.
Battery and charging
| Model | Apple-rated listening claim | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| AirPods 4 | Up to 5 hours per charge | Feature and volume settings affect results |
| AirPods 4 ANC | Up to 5 hours, or up to 4 with ANC | ANC reduces the rated figure |
| AirPods Pro 3 | Up to 8 hours with ANC | Up to 10 hours in Transparency using Hearing Aid |
| AirPods Max 2 | Up to 20 hours with ANC | Over-ear test conditions differ from earbud tests |
These numbers are not directly comparable: Apple uses different modes and test conditions. Volume, Spatial Audio, ANC, environment, software and battery age all change real use. Earbud models also provide additional listening from their cases, while Max 2’s larger figure comes with a much heavier device.
AirPods 4 has a USB-C case. AirPods 4 ANC has a wireless case compatible with Apple Watch charging, Qi and USB-C, plus a Find My speaker. Pro 3 uses a USB-C MagSafe Charging Case with Apple Watch and Qi charging, a speaker and lanyard loop. Max 2 charges directly over USB-C.

Apple-only features and their requirements
All four are most useful inside an Apple ecosystem. Depending on model and software, benefits include automatic pairing, iCloud-linked switching among Apple devices, Find My, Siri and Siri Interactions, Personalized Spatial Audio, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, camera-remote functions and Apple Watch charging for the relevant earbud cases.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Live Translation is a system feature
Apple lists Live Translation for AirPods 4 ANC, AirPods Pro 2 and later, and AirPods Max 2. Requirements include an iPhone 15 Pro or later, iOS 26 or later, Apple Intelligence, the Translate app, current AirPods firmware and supported language and regional settings. Apple specifies iOS 26.4 or later for Max 2.
The feature is described as beta and translations can be inaccurate. It is not simply built into the earbuds: the iPhone, operating system, app, downloaded languages, Apple Intelligence and firmware all participate. Check Apple’s current requirements before buying for travel.
Using AirPods with Android or Windows
All current AirPods can function as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, but Apple says functionality may be limited. You may lose automatic Apple-device switching, full battery and settings integration, Siri features, Personalized Spatial Audio setup, hearing features, some Find My capabilities and convenient firmware management.
Recommended Free Tools
For an Android- and Windows-only owner, AirPods should not be the default recommendation. Compare platform-neutral earbuds or headphones on total feature access, not merely whether Bluetooth pairing works.
Best Value
- Active Noise Cancellation blocks outside noise, so you can immerse yourself in music
- Transparency mode for hearing and interacting with the world around you
- Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking places sound all around you
- Adaptive EQ automatically tunes music to your ears
- Three sizes of soft, tapered silicone tips for a customizable fit
Which AirPods should you buy?
- Choose AirPods 4 for the lowest-cost current option, open fit, calls and casual listening. Accept no ANC, no wireless case charging and no advanced hearing or workout features.
- Choose AirPods 4 ANC if silicone tips are unacceptable but you want ANC, Transparency, Adaptive Audio, wireless charging and Live Translation support. Expect less isolation than Pro 3.
- Choose AirPods Pro 3 for commuting, flights, shared offices, workouts, hearing features, heart-rate sensing and the strongest all-round in-ear package. Make sure you can tolerate a sealed fit.
- Choose AirPods Max 2 for over-ear comfort, physical controls, immersive stationary listening and wired USB-C lossless or low-latency audio. Accept 386.2-gram weight and limited portability.
Common buying traps
“I hate in-ear buds but need ANC”
Start with AirPods 4 ANC. If isolation is more important than avoiding tips, reconsider Pro 3; the open design necessarily limits passive blocking.
“My earbuds fall out”
More expensive does not guarantee a better fit. Open AirPods may be comfortable but less secure; Pro 3 may hold better with the right tip but can be rejected by your ears. Max 2 removes earbud-retention problems while adding headband weight and heat.
“I need a hearing aid”
Do not substitute AirPods 4 or Max 2 for Pro 3’s qualified hearing features, and do not treat Pro 3 as universal medical equipment. Check regional eligibility and consult a hearing professional.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →“I need lossless Bluetooth”
That premise is wrong for Max 2. Apple’s lossless and ultra-low-latency mode requires a wired USB-C connection and compatible content.
“A discounted Pro 2 must be the better deal”
Pro 2 can be worthwhile when substantially cheaper, but check seller reputation, warranty, battery condition, charging-port type (USB-C or Lightning), authenticity and the exact feature you need. Pro 3 adds newer design, Apple’s stronger claimed ANC comparison, heart-rate sensing and newer support.
Should you buy an older AirPods Max?
First-generation Max can still suit someone who specifically wants its over-ear design at a large discount, but compare its battery condition, warranty, charging arrangement and supported features with Max 2. Do not pay near-current-model pricing for old stock or a used battery whose remaining life is unknown.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Buy AirPods Pro 3 unless you specifically need an open fit or over-ear design. AirPods 4 are the value choice, AirPods 4 ANC are the best non-sealing compromise, and AirPods Max 2 are for listeners who want a premium over-ear experience rather than the convenience of earbuds.
