iOS 26 is no longer “coming”: Apple released it in September 2025, and its AirPods features have arrived through a combination of iPhone software and AirPods firmware updates. The headline additions are Live Translation, improved recording and call quality, a camera-remote gesture, automatic media pausing when you fall asleep, CarPlay-related Automatic Switching, and—on newer hardware—workout heart-rate sensing.
Compatibility is feature-specific. AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation receive the most important iOS 26-era upgrades, while AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Max 2 add newer hardware capabilities of their own.

Live Translation with AirPods
Live Translation is the most conspicuous new AirPods capability. When another person speaks, the iPhone processes the conversation and the AirPods play the translation in your preferred language. The Translate app displays a transcript, and the iPhone can play your translated response through its speaker.
If both people have supported AirPods and start Live Translation, each person can hear translated speech through their own earbuds. The other person does not need compatible AirPods, however: they can speak normally while the iPhone displays or plays the translation. In a noisy environment, moving the iPhone closer to the speaker can improve microphone pickup.
Requirements
- iPhone 15 Pro or later, according to Apple’s current support documentation
- iOS 26 or later
- Apple Intelligence enabled
- The Apple Translate app installed
- A supported AirPods model with the latest firmware
- A supported language and region
Apple lists AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods Pro 2 and later, and AirPods Max 2 among the supported models. To start a session, open Translate → Live → Start Translation. Other options include assigning the iPhone Action button to Translate, holding both AirPods stems on supported earbuds, holding the listening-mode button on AirPods Max 2, saying “Siri, start Live Translation,” or starting it during a Phone or FaceTime call.

Live Translation launched with a limited language set. iOS 26.1 later added Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Italian, as documented in Apple’s iOS 26.1 release notes. Availability can still vary by country, language, Apple Intelligence support, and regulatory restrictions.
This is not a substitute for a professional interpreter. Background noise, overlapping speech, an unsupported language, poor microphone placement, and unusual phrasing can reduce accuracy. Apple warns that generated translations may be inaccurate, unexpected, or offensive. Verify medical, legal, emergency, and other high-consequence information rather than relying on the feature alone.
Studio-quality audio recording
Apple uses “studio-quality” to describe an improved recording mode that combines the AirPods’ microphones with software processing. It does not mean that AirPods become equivalent to a dedicated XLR, USB, lavalier, or shotgun microphone.

Apple says the feature is intended for interviews, podcasts, singing, video creation, Voice Memos, dictation in Messages, the Camera app, Webex, and compatible third-party camera or conferencing apps. AirPods can be more convenient than a phone microphone when the speaker is moving, and Voice Isolation can improve speech intelligibility in a noisy setting.

Results still depend on the earbuds’ position and fit, wind, background noise, Bluetooth behavior, and the recording app. A third-party app must support the relevant audio path; the fact that an app records audio does not guarantee AirPods recording support. Test the setup before an important interview or shoot.
Apple’s original announcement covers AirPods 4 with ANC and AirPods Pro 2. Do not assume that every newer or older model supports the same recording mode without checking current documentation.
Use AirPods as a camera remote
With supported AirPods connected and worn, open the Camera app or a compatible third-party camera app, frame the shot, and press and hold an AirPods stem to take a photo or start or stop video recording.
This is useful for group photos, tripod shots, solo filming, and reducing camera shake caused by reaching for the phone. It is not a universal Bluetooth shutter. Support varies by app, and the exact result—taking a still image or starting and stopping video—depends on the selected app. The earbuds may need to be connected and worn for the gesture to respond.

Automatic pausing when you fall asleep
AirPods firmware adds an automatic media-pause behavior when the wearer becomes inactive while winding down for sleep. It can be convenient for podcasts, music, and long-form audio, but it should not be called sleep tracking.
Apple’s public documentation does not fully specify the detection algorithm, timing threshold, false-positive rate, or complete model-by-model compatibility. Sitting still, meditating, watching a film without moving, or briefly dozing may produce behavior that is not what you intended. The feature also does not provide sleep stages or medical measurements, and it cannot guarantee that the AirPods will remain in place overnight.

AirPods Automatic Switching now works with CarPlay-related handoffs. In practical terms, audio can better move between AirPods, the iPhone, and a CarPlay-equipped vehicle as you enter or leave the car.
This is an ecosystem convenience improvement, not a new audio codec or CarPlay app. Behavior depends on the vehicle, CarPlay configuration, paired Apple devices, AirPods firmware, and Automatic Switching settings. It will not necessarily behave identically in every car.
If audio changes devices unexpectedly, open your AirPods settings from Settings → Bluetooth → ⓘ next to your AirPods and review the Automatic Switching preference. The same firmware notes also document the CarPlay enhancement.

Improved call and voice quality
Apple says the iOS 26-era AirPods update improves voice quality for calls and recordings, with Voice Isolation available in suitable contexts. That can make speech clearer in noisy surroundings and help with FaceTime, conferencing, dictation, and other supported uses.
It does not eliminate every sound. The other person’s phone, network, calling app, microphone processing, wind, and surrounding noise still affect the result. iOS 26.1 also improves FaceTime audio in low-bandwidth conditions, but that is a broader FaceTime improvement rather than an AirPods-only feature.

Heart-rate sensing is a separate, hardware-dependent capability. Apple’s current comparison material lists it for AirPods Pro 3, along with workout metrics such as heart rate, calories burned, steps, and distance in the Fitness app.
It is not an iOS 26 software upgrade for AirPods Pro 2 or AirPods 4. Workout type, fit, app support, firmware, and the connected iPhone or Apple Watch configuration can affect availability and results. It should not be treated as a replacement for a medical-grade monitor.
What you need before the features work
- Update the iPhone: Install iOS 26 or later.
- Update AirPods firmware: Connect the AirPods, place them in their case, connect the case to power, and leave them near the paired iPhone with Bluetooth enabled. Firmware updates are delivered automatically.
- Check the firmware: Open Settings → Bluetooth, tap the ⓘ beside the AirPods, and read the firmware version. Compare it with Apple’s current firmware support page. Do not rely on an old launch-era version number.
- Confirm the app: Live Translation requires Translate. Recording and camera control require an app that supports the relevant AirPods feature.
- Check availability: Language, region, Apple Intelligence support, and local restrictions can affect Live Translation.
An updated iPhone alone is not enough. Several major features are delivered or enabled by AirPods firmware, and older hardware cannot receive every capability.
Do you need to buy new AirPods?
Already own AirPods Pro 2?
Probably not. AirPods Pro 2 are explicitly included in Apple’s original support announcement for recording, camera remote, and improved calls, and Apple’s current support page includes them for Live Translation. Update the iPhone and AirPods firmware first.

Already own AirPods 4 with ANC?
Also probably not. This is the lower-cost route to the major supported features for users who prefer an open-fit design, while still getting ANC. It is not the right choice if you specifically want silicone tips, maximum isolation, or Pro 3 heart-rate sensing.
Own standard AirPods 4 or an older generation?
Do not assume that an iOS update will add the new feature set. Standard AirPods 4 without ANC and older models may continue to work as ordinary Bluetooth headphones, but the launch-specific recording, camera, translation, and firmware features are model-dependent.
Buying specifically for Live Translation?
Choose a currently supported model such as AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods Pro 2 or Pro 3, or AirPods Max 2, and pair it with an iPhone 15 Pro or later that supports Apple Intelligence. Confirm language and regional availability before buying.
Buying specifically for recording or camera control?
Choose a model Apple explicitly lists for those functions. AirPods 4 with ANC and AirPods Pro 2 are the clearest documented choices in Apple’s original announcement. App support remains essential.
Buying specifically for workout metrics?
AirPods Pro 3 is the relevant current option in Apple’s comparison material. That is a hardware upgrade decision, not a reason for every AirPods Pro 2 owner to replace otherwise functional earbuds.
Considering AirPods Max 2?
AirPods Max 2 are a separate over-ear purchase. Apple’s current support documentation includes them for Live Translation, but an over-ear model is less practical if your priority is discreet translation, a camera remote, or workout tracking. Confirm each feature individually rather than assuming that earbud support transfers to Max.
The bottom line
For most existing owners, iOS 26 is a firmware-and-software upgrade rather than a reason to replace working AirPods. AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 with ANC receive the strongest value from the new features. Buy AirPods Pro 3 only when its hardware-specific benefits—especially workout heart-rate sensing—matter to you, and treat Live Translation as an iPhone, Apple Intelligence, Translate, AirPods, language, and region-dependent system rather than a standalone earbud feature.
