Short answer: the Amazfit Active 3 Premium is built to make a strong hardware-value case for new and recreational runners, with a sapphire-glass AMOLED display, offline maps, route planning and manufacturer-claimed battery life of up to 12 days. But the “under $200” part needs a live U.S. price check: the available official listing does not establish a dependable current price. If it is below $200, it is most compelling for display, materials, maps and battery; Garmin remains the safer pick for established running plans and ecosystem depth.

What the Active 3 Premium offers

Amazfit positions the Active 3 Premium for first-time and entry-level runners. Its headline features include sapphire glass over an AMOLED display, offline maps, route planning—including optimized round-trip routing—and running metrics. Those are meaningful capabilities at a low price, but the product page’s feature list is not proof of elite GPS accuracy, a mature coaching system or full topographic, turn-by-turn navigation.

The distinction matters: sapphire is a premium screen-protection material, while AMOLED is a display technology. Neither tells you how reliably the watch records pace or heart rate. Likewise, “offline maps” can mean different things from downloadable route guidance to detailed maps with rerouting. The available product information confirms offline maps and route planning, but does not settle the map detail, regional coverage, rerouting behavior or whether navigation is fully independent of a phone. Check those specifics for your country and intended routes before buying.

The official listing also does not establish a reliable current U.S. price in the available information. Treat sub-$200 as a price target, not a guaranteed regular price. Before checkout, distinguish the standard price from a launch offer, coupon, retailer discount or regional conversion; note the seller, currency and whether a code is required. Availability, included accessories, warranty, returns and phone operating-system requirements should likewise be confirmed on the live listing.

Which running features matter to a beginner?

For most new runners, dependable distance, pace, route recording and easy-to-read workout alerts matter before a long menu of advanced metrics. Heart-rate zones can help you notice whether an easy run is becoming too hard, but wrist optical readings are estimates. Fit, cold weather, tattoos, rapid changes in effort and other individual factors can affect them. A chest strap may be preferable for interval work if the watch supports the specific sensor; verify compatibility rather than assuming it.

Training load, recovery, VO₂ max and similar measures are best treated as estimates and trends, not medical readings or definitive judgments of fitness. A watch can show many metrics without turning them into a coherent plan. Before choosing the Active 3 Premium for a race goal, check whether it can create or guide the particular structured workouts you need, how those workouts are set up, and whether the app explains its recommendations in plain language.

Amazfit Active 2 Premium Smart Watch 1.32" Sapphire Glass, GPS, iOS/Android
  • STYLISH DESIGN, BRIGHT DISPLAY: The sleek stainless steel build blends classic style with workout durability, while the bright 1.32" AMOLED display keeps your data easy to read, even under bright sunlight.
  • PRECISE HEART RATE AND SLEEP TRACKING: Amazfit's BioTracker technology tracks your heart rate and sleep data with accuracy that previous sensors just can't match.
  • UP TO 10 DAYS OF BATTERY LIFE: With long battery life that lasts up to 10 days with typical use, nightly recharges are a thing of the past.
  • FREE MAPS WITH TURN DIRECTIONS: Stay on-track with free downloadable maps, and get turn-by-turn guidance on-screen or via your Bluetooth headphones. Enjoy ski maps for global resorts, including guidance for cable cars, slopes, and more.
  • FASTER AND MORE ACCURATE GPS TRACKING: 5 satellite positioning systems ensure fast GPS connection and accurate positioning whenever you're out running, walking, cycling or hiking.

GPS capability also needs more than a feature-count comparison. Multiple satellite systems are not the same as dual-frequency GPS, and the available information here does not establish that this model has dual-band GNSS. Tall buildings, tree cover, cliffs and tight switchbacks can challenge location tracking on any watch. If precise pacing in those conditions is a priority, seek independent testing of this exact model rather than inferring accuracy from its maps or satellite support.

Battery: compare GPS hours, not just days

Amazfit advertises up to 12 days in smartwatch use and up to 76 hours of continuous GPS in a power-saving mode. These are manufacturer estimates for different operating conditions, not interchangeable measures or independent test results. In particular, the 76-hour figure is explicitly tied to power-saving GPS; it should not be read as 76 hours of full-precision GPS with every feature enabled.

  • DUAL-BAND GPS & OFFLINE MAPS: Navigate confidently with dual-band positioning and six satellite systems. Use offline maps, turn-by-turn navigation, and automatic rerouting to stay on track without your phone.
  • 21-DAY BATTERY: Get up to 21 days of battery life on a single charge, and never worry about forgetting your charger on trips. Enjoy long battery life performance from work, to workouts, to weekend trips.
  • AMOLED SCREEN & BUILT-IN FLASHLIGHT: A large 1.5" AMOLED screen protected by sapphire glass is easy to read in bright daylight or night. Stay safe and visible in low-light conditions with the built-in white or tactical red flashlight.
  • NO SUBSCRIPTION APP: Health, recovery, and workout data is free to access in the included Zepp App. Track calories and protein goals.
  • APP CONNECTIONS & HYROX TRAINING: Use fitness apps like Strava, TrainingPeaks, Intervals.ICU to share workouts. Improve HYROX training with built-in HYROX training plans and Virtual Pace simulations.

The available Active 3 Premium information does not provide a comparable normal-accuracy GPS figure or a GPS-plus-music figure. It also does not establish how much always-on display, notifications, continuous health monitoring, music or cold weather changes actual endurance. If you run three to five times a week, the practical question is how many hours of GPS you get in the mode you will actually use—and how often you are willing to charge—not just the best-case smartwatch-days number.

For context, Garmin rates the Forerunner 165 at up to 11 days in smartwatch mode and up to 19 hours in GPS-only mode. Garmin’s manual lists lower figures for some other configurations, including all-systems GNSS and music use. Compare modes like for like: a power-saving GPS maximum on one watch is not a fair direct comparison with standard GPS on another.

Active 3 Premium vs. Garmin Forerunner 165

What matters Amazfit Active 3 Premium Garmin Forerunner 165
Price context Sub-$200 U.S. pricing is not established by the available official listing; confirm the live price and offer terms. U.S. launch MSRP was $249.99; current sale pricing can differ.
Display and materials Sapphire-glass AMOLED, according to Amazfit. AMOLED; the supplied Garmin sources do not establish a sapphire lens.
Battery claims Up to 12 days smartwatch use; up to 76 hours GPS in power-saving mode, both manufacturer estimates. Up to 11 days smartwatch mode and up to 19 hours GPS-only, per Garmin; other modes have different figures.
Training Running metrics are advertised; confirm the exact workout, coaching and analysis functions that matter to you. Daily suggested workouts, Garmin Coach plans, running dynamics, running power, PacePro and recovery information are among Garmin’s documented features.
Maps and navigation Offline maps and route planning are advertised; confirm map detail, coverage and navigation behavior. The Forerunner 165 is not the Garmin choice for full mapping; Garmin reserves mapping and other advanced training features for higher lines.
Safety and ecosystem Verify feature availability and phone requirements for the functions you need. Garmin’s running platform includes safety features, Garmin Connect and Garmin Pay; some safety functions require a paired compatible phone.

Garmin’s U.S. launch announcement gives the Forerunner 165 a $249.99 launch price, so it is not inherently a sub-$200 alternative. A discount may change the decision. Garmin’s product information documents its beginner-friendly workout and coaching tools. Garmin’s own runner comparison also shows that multi-band GPS, mapping, training readiness and training status are reserved for higher models; do not assume every Garmin running watch includes those features.

The trade-off is not simply “more features for less money.” If the Active 3 Premium is genuinely under $200, its materials, screen, advertised maps and battery may make it attractive as hardware. Garmin is the more straightforward choice if you want a well-established running ecosystem, structured plans, safety tools and a familiar path to more advanced Forerunners. The Forerunner 165’s launch price is historical, not a promise of what it costs today.

Who should consider it—and who should wait?

  • Consider it if the confirmed price is below $200 and you care most about an AMOLED screen, sapphire protection, route features, long advertised battery life and general smartwatch use alongside recreational running.
  • Compare it with Garmin if you are following a 5K, 10K or half-marathon plan and want established guided workouts, Garmin Coach, safety features or Garmin Connect integration. A discounted Forerunner 165 near your budget could be the better fit.
  • Look at a running-first alternative if training analytics and post-run analysis matter more than display materials and lifestyle functions. COROS and Polar are relevant categories, but the information available here does not verify a specific current U.S. model and price under $200; check the exact model and live price before treating either as a budget match.
  • Be cautious if you need cellular service without a phone, highly dependable heart-rate readings, proven accuracy in difficult GPS environments, extensive third-party app support, or full topographic maps and turn-by-turn rerouting. Confirm those requirements directly; the advertised feature labels alone do not answer them.

Apple Watch SE and Samsung Galaxy Watch models may suit compatible-phone owners who put everyday smartwatch functions first. They are a different trade-off: battery life and continuity as dedicated running platforms are important comparison points, so choose based on your actual run and phone needs rather than notification count alone.

Verdict

The Amazfit Active 3 Premium has the ingredients of a compelling affordable running watch: sapphire-glass AMOLED, offline maps, route planning and ambitious battery claims. The case is strongest below $200, but the price must be confirmed at the time and place you buy. At that price, it looks best for a beginner or recreational runner who values hardware and everyday versatility. Around $200–$250, compare it closely with a discounted Forerunner 165; above $250, the hardware advantages need to matter enough to outweigh Garmin’s more established training tools. Whichever you choose, verify the exact GPS mode, map behavior, phone requirements and training features you will rely on.
