The Amazfit Active Max is a compelling budget fitness smartwatch, but it is not a complete Garmin replacement. Launched in the U.S. on December 30, 2025, at about $169.99, it combines a large AMOLED display, onboard audio storage, offline maps, GPS and a claimed battery life of up to 25 days.
The important qualifications are that its 4GB storage is for local audio files rather than native Spotify or Pandora apps, and the 25-day figure applies to Amazfit’s typical-use test conditions—not daily GPS workouts. It is best understood as a long-lasting fitness watch for casual runners, gym users and hikers on a budget, rather than a direct competitor to Garmin’s deeper training and navigation ecosystem.
What is the Amazfit Active Max?
The Active Max is Amazfit’s large, fitness-focused smartwatch. Its U.S. list price was shown as $169.99 on the official product page at the time of writing; pricing can vary, so check the official Amazfit product page before buying.
It has a 48.5 × 48.5 × 12.2mm body, weighs 39.5g without the strap and uses an aluminum-alloy frame with a polymer case. Two physical buttons supplement the touchscreen. The watch is rated for 5 ATM water resistance, which is suitable for ordinary swimming-related use but should not be treated as a diving rating.

Amazfit positions it as a relatively inexpensive alternative to sports watches that cost considerably more. That comparison is reasonable for features such as storage, maps and battery life, but not for every aspect of training analysis, navigation or ecosystem support.
Does the Active Max really have built-in music storage?
Yes—but “built-in music” does not mean Spotify on your wrist. The Active Max has 4GB of onboard storage. Amazfit advertises up to 100 hours of podcast playback, while independent coverage describes the storage as supporting music or podcasts and enabling phone-free listening.
That is different from installing a streaming service. Amazfit’s FAQ says third-party music apps such as Spotify and Pandora cannot be installed directly on the watch. The watch can control music playing on a connected phone, but that is phone-based playback rather than local audio stored on the watch.
| Audio function | What it means |
|---|---|
| Local audio | Audio files are stored on the watch for playback away from the phone. |
| Music controls | The watch controls playback from a paired smartphone. |
| Streaming apps | Spotify, Pandora and similar third-party apps cannot be installed directly, according to Amazfit. |
You should also avoid assuming that all 4GB is available for audio: the operating system, maps and watch content use storage too. Amazfit’s published material does not establish a precise number of songs that can be stored. The exact supported formats and transfer procedure should be confirmed in the current software and support documentation. For phone-free listening, compatible Bluetooth headphones or earbuds will also be necessary.
The practical verdict is straightforward: the Active Max can be useful for runners who want local music or podcasts without carrying a phone, but it is not a good choice if your main requirement is downloading Spotify playlists directly to the watch.

- STYLISH DESIGN, VIBRANT DISPLAY: The lightweight aluminum build blends effortless style with workout durability, while the vivid 1.97" AMOLED display keeps your data easy to read, even under bright sunlight.

- UP TO 14 DAYS BATTERY LIFE: The Amazfit Bip 6 smart watch powers through your training and recovery for up to two weeks at a time - no nightly charging needed.
- ACCURATE GPS TRACKING & NAVIGATION: Stay on course with free downloadable maps and turn-by-turn directions. Support from 5 satellite systems ensures precise tracking of every move and fast GPS connection.

Is the three-week battery claim realistic?
Amazfit’s “three-week” headline refers to up to 25 days in typical use. That is a manufacturer maximum, not a promise that every owner will receive 25 days between charges.
| Usage scenario | Amazfit’s stated maximum |
|---|---|
| Typical use | Up to 25 days |
| Heavy use | Up to 13 days |
| Always-on display | Up to 10 days |
| Continuous GPS | Up to 64 hours |
| GPS plus music | Up to 22 hours |
Battery life will fall with frequent GPS workouts, music playback, Bluetooth calls, high brightness, continuous health monitoring, an always-on display, frequent wrist raises and many notifications. Someone who takes occasional walks and runs may get close to the headline figure. Someone training with GPS every day should use the GPS ratings—not the typical-use figure—as the more relevant guide.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For long runs or races, the 22-hour GPS-plus-music rating is especially important. It suggests that the watch can cover many endurance events, but it should not be described as offering multiweek battery life while continuously tracking GPS and playing audio.
Tom’s Guide reported recharging the watch only two or three times over more than two months and considered the 25-day claim broadly credible. That is useful hands-on evidence, but it remains one reviewer’s experience rather than a controlled laboratory result.
Can the Active Max replace a Garmin?
Only for the right kind of Garmin buyer. “Garmin” covers everything from entry-level running watches to advanced multisport computers, so a blanket comparison is misleading.

- STYLISH DESIGN, BRIGHT DISPLAY: The sleek stainless steel build blends classic style with workout durability, while the bright 1.32" AMOLED display keeps your data easy to read, even under bright sunlight.
- PRECISE HEART RATE AND SLEEP TRACKING: Amazfit's BioTracker technology tracks your heart rate and sleep data with accuracy that previous sensors just can't match.
- UP TO 10 DAYS OF BATTERY LIFE: With long battery life that lasts up to 10 days with typical use, nightly recharges are a thing of the past.
- FREE MAPS WITH TURN DIRECTIONS: Stay on-track with free downloadable maps, and get turn-by-turn guidance on-screen or via your Bluetooth headphones. Enjoy ski maps for global resorts, including guidance for cable cars, slopes, and more.
- FASTER AND MORE ACCURATE GPS TRACKING: 5 satellite positioning systems ensure fast GPS connection and accurate positioning whenever you're out running, walking, cycling or hiking.
The more appropriate price-class comparison is the Garmin Forerunner 55. The Forerunner 165 Music is a closer alternative for runners who specifically want established onboard music support and Garmin’s training platform. Higher-end Forerunner 965- or 970-class watches explain why Amazfit’s feature list sounds impressive, but they are not fair price comparisons. Garmin Instinct models are another category entirely, emphasizing outdoor durability and different display priorities.
Where the Active Max is attractive
- Much lower cost than premium Garmin models.
- Long advertised battery life in smartwatch mode.
- Large, bright AMOLED display.
- Onboard local audio storage.
- Offline maps.
- More than 170 sports modes.
- Zepp Coach adaptive training plans.
- Bluetooth calling through a paired phone.
- Android speech-to-text message replies are advertised.
- Works with both Android phones and iPhones.
Where Garmin remains the safer choice
- More mature training metrics and data presentation.
- Stronger route-planning and navigation workflows.
- Broader support for serious runners, cyclists and specialized sports.
- Greater compatibility with established coaching, club and training workflows.
- A more familiar Garmin Connect ecosystem for users already invested in Garmin.
- More advanced positioning, durability and physiological features on premium models.
The Active Max can imitate the feature checklist of a more expensive sports watch. It does not automatically deliver the same consistency, data depth or long-term platform value.
How good are the offline maps?
The Active Max supports downloadable offline maps. Amazfit also promotes outdoor maps and contour details for more than 2,000 ski resorts. Independent testing found the maps reasonably detailed, including street names and points of interest.
However, the navigation experience is less mature than Garmin’s. Tom’s Guide reported that routes need to be created through the Zepp app and that there is no simple “tap a location and navigate” workflow. The review also found the elevation and contour experience less useful than Garmin’s implementation.
That makes the maps valuable as a route reference or backup, particularly for recreational hiking, running and skiing. They should not be treated as proof that the Active Max offers full Garmin-style turn-by-turn navigation. If route guidance is the central reason you are buying a watch, Garmin remains the lower-risk choice.

- 21-DAY BATTERY: Get up to 21 days of battery life on a single charge, and never worry about forgetting your charger on trips. Enjoy long battery life performance from work, to workouts, to weekend trips.
- AMOLED SCREEN & BUILT-IN FLASHLIGHT: A large 1.5" AMOLED screen protected by sapphire glass is easy to read in bright daylight or night. Stay safe and visible in low-light conditions with the built-in white or tactical red flashlight.
- NO SUBSCRIPTION APP: Health, recovery, and workout data is free to access in the included Zepp App. Track calories and protein goals.

Fitness, health and training features
The Active Max offers a broad list of fitness functions:
- More than 170 workout modes.
- Automatic rep, set and rest detection for 25 strength exercises.
- Zepp Coach adaptive plans.
- Running plans for 3K, 5K, 10K, half-marathon and marathon distances.
- Heart-rate, blood-oxygen, stress and sleep monitoring.
- A BioTracker PPG sensor.
- Barometric altimeter, gyroscope, geomagnetic and temperature sensors.
- Five satellite positioning systems.
- Integration options including Strava, TrainingPeaks, komoot, adidas Running, Apple Health and Google Fit, subject to platform and regional limitations.
These specifications show breadth, not guaranteed accuracy or superior training value. A watch can offer hundreds of modes while providing only basic data in many of them. Buyers should separate the number of functions from the consistency, interpretation and usefulness of the resulting measurements.
Who should buy the Amazfit Active Max?
The Active Max makes the most sense if you want:
- A price around $170 or lower.
- Very long battery life for ordinary smartwatch use.
- A large and bright AMOLED screen.
- Local music or podcast playback without carrying a phone.
- Offline maps as a backup or route-reference tool.
- Many workout modes and basic adaptive training guidance.
- Compatibility with either iPhone or Android.
It is particularly appealing to general fitness users, casual runners, gym users and hikers who value convenience more than advanced training analysis.
Who should skip it?
Choose Garmin instead if you need deep running analytics, highly dependable navigation, broad third-party sensor support, serious multisport or trail-running tools, or a platform already used by your coach or training group.

You should also look elsewhere if native Spotify downloads are essential. The Active Max’s local-audio storage is not the same as a smartwatch app ecosystem.
Best Value
- LARGE 2.07" AMOLED DISPLAY: Maximize visibility with a massive, bright 2.07-inch screen. This everyday smartwatch transitions effortlessly from daily wear to intense workouts, with its lightweight aluminum alloy body and a clean two-button layout.
- 20-DAY BATTERY LIFE: Say goodbye to nightly charging, with up to 20 days of typical use. This long battery life delivers reliable performance to track your health, fitness, and daily routines without interruption.
- 4GB ONBOARD STORAGE: Keep your essentials right on your wrist. With ample space for offline maps, this fitness tracker allows you to leave your phone behind and enjoy quick, easy access to your media while you explore.
- GPS TRACKING & OFFLINE MAPS: Download free detailed maps from the Zepp App, with turn-by-turn directions and off-track alerts. Backed by 5 satellite systems for fast GPS connection, your route will be tracked with precision.
- HYBRID TRAINING IN ZEPP APP: Improve long-term performance with a balanced system of endurance, strength, and recovery. The subscription-free Zepp App acts as your all-in-one hub for training and nutrition, providing actionable insights.
Finally, consider the fit. A 48.5mm case is large, even though the watch body weighs only 39.5g. People with smaller wrists may find a smaller model such as the Amazfit Active 2 more comfortable.
Bottom line
The Amazfit Active Max delivers unusually strong hardware value at around $169.99: a bright AMOLED screen, local audio storage, offline maps, GPS and an impressive battery specification. Its most credible advantage is endurance in ordinary smartwatch use, not three weeks of daily GPS training.
Buy it if you want a low-cost, long-lasting fitness watch with local podcasts or music. Do not buy it expecting native Spotify, Garmin-level navigation or Garmin’s mature training ecosystem. It is a strong budget alternative for general fitness—not a one-for-one Garmin replacement.
