The Amazfit GTR 4 still makes a convincing everyday fitness watch: it has a sharp AMOLED display, capable dual-band GPS, useful route guidance and battery life that can stretch well beyond a day or two. Its compromises matter, though. Optical heart-rate results are mixed, training tools are less complete than those on sports-focused watches, and the GTR 4 is an older model whose place in Amazfit’s current lineup is limited. In 2026, it is worth considering only if the actual price is comfortably below newer alternatives and the seller offers a clear return policy and warranty.

Is the Amazfit GTR 4 still worth buying?
It can be a good buy for someone who wants a traditional-looking watch for everyday activity and recreational GPS workouts, and values long battery life more than deep smartwatch features or detailed coaching. It is not automatically affordable just because it launched at $199.99 in 2022. Amazfit’s current US catalog emphasizes newer families and does not prominently list the GTR 4, so there is no dependable current official checkout price to use as a benchmark. - Good value: the GTR 4 is substantially cheaper than a current mid-range alternative and comes from a seller offering a meaningful warranty and return window.
- Borderline: a moderate discount may not compensate for its older software generation and uncertain future support.
- Poor value: the price is close to a newer Amazfit model, a current Garmin, or an Apple or Wear OS watch that better fits your needs.
Check the listing before buying. A new old-stock watch is not the same as a refurbished or used unit, and an imported version can have different regional support or feature availability. The standard GTR 4 is also distinct from the GTR 4 Limited Edition, which uses different materials and charging hardware. Listings with names such as “GTR 4 New Version” deserve particular scrutiny: community posts show buyer confusion over similar product names, but do not establish what a given listing contains. Design, comfort and display
The GTR 4 looks like a conventional round watch rather than a small phone on the wrist. Its aluminum upper case, rotating and pressable crown, and secondary button give it a more traditional feel; the 22 mm strap fitting makes replacement straps straightforward. Notebookcheck found it comfortable, but the 46 mm case may feel large on a smaller wrist. The standard model should not be confused with the Limited Edition’s different construction. The bright, sharp 1.43-inch AMOLED is one of the watch’s strongest everyday features. Expert Reviews found it readable and praised the fluid Zepp OS interface. The glossy screen and fixed bezel are practical considerations: the face can catch reflections, and the bezel does not rotate as an input. The crown provides a convenient way to move through menus, while the large screen helps with notifications and workout figures. Fitness tracking: broad coverage, uneven depth
Amazfit advertises more than 150 sports modes, along with heart rate, blood oxygen, sleep, stress and training metrics. A large mode count does not mean every activity gets equally detailed analysis. The GTR 4 is most useful for logging common activities, GPS routes and broad fitness trends; it is less compelling as a comprehensive coaching system. Everyday activity and automatic detection
The original manual lists automatic recognition for walking, indoor walking, outdoor running, treadmill, outdoor cycling, pool swimming, elliptical and rowing machine. Detection needs to be enabled and configured, and leaving automatic workout detection on can use more battery. For activities where reliable start and stop times matter, manually starting the workout is the safer approach. GTR 4 manual

Workout records can include GPS traces, laps or sets, goal completion, training load, recovery time, VO₂ Max and training effect. The watch can retain up to 100 recent workout records; Amazfit recommends syncing with the Zepp app soon after exercise. These measures can help with general awareness, but they are estimates and should not be treated as clinical assessments or a substitute for a coach’s plan. GTR 4 manual
Running and structured workouts
The GTR 4 can serve casual runners who mainly want pace, distance, route tracking and broad training-load awareness. Its original structured-workout tools were limited: Expert Reviews found basic intervals with warm-up, cooldown and repeats, but workout targets such as cadence or heart-rate zone applied to the whole session rather than to individual intervals. Software updates added more capability than the launch-era reviews describe. Amazfit’s Zepp OS 3.0 update documentation lists Zepp Coach running plans, training templates, interval training, triathlon and multisport types, and support for external heart-rate belts and cycling power meters. That is a meaningful improvement, but it does not make the GTR 4 equivalent to a sports watch built around detailed periodized training or race-specific coaching. Heart rate and health measurements
Optical heart-rate performance is the key fitness caveat. Notebookcheck found resting heart-rate results close to a Polar H10 chest strap in its test, while Expert Reviews identified heart-rate monitoring as the watch’s weakest area using a MyZone MZ Switch chest belt; Tech Advisor also reported mixed fitness-tracking results. Wrist-based optical readings are more likely to be useful for resting heart rate, broad effort trends and steady exercise than for intervals, weight training or rapidly changing intensity. Fit also matters: a loose strap, poor sensor contact, cold conditions, tattoos or heavy hair can affect readings. For demanding sessions, pair a compatible Bluetooth chest strap after the relevant Zepp OS update; the documented route is Watch Settings > Bluetooth > Workout accessory. Amazfit Zepp OS 3.0 update
SpO₂, sleep, stress, readiness, recovery and related readings are wellness and training estimates, not medical diagnoses. The GTR 4 does not provide ECG or temperature sensing.
GPS and route navigation
Dual-band GNSS is a strong feature for the price class. Notebookcheck found satellite acquisition quick and reported that a cycling route compared favorably with a Garmin Venu 2 for turns and total distance. That is encouraging test evidence, not proof of universal accuracy: buildings, trees, tunnels, terrain, firmware, satellite visibility and workout settings all affect a recorded track. Firmware update 3.17.0.2 added route functions. The watch supports GPX, TCX and KML imports and breadcrumb-style guidance rather than full-color offline maps. To send a route to the watch:
- Select the route file on your phone and choose Open with Zepp.
- Save the route in Zepp and send it to the device.
- During a supported outdoor workout, open Settings > Navigation on the watch.
- For return guidance, use Outdoor sports > Pause > Navigation > Back to start point.
Route support depends on having the relevant update installed and choosing a supported sport. Someone expecting downloaded topographic maps or turn-by-turn map tiles should look elsewhere. Amazfit route-update instructions; Expert Reviews on route following
If GPS does not lock or the track looks wrong
- Start the outdoor workout and wait until the GPS status bar turns green before beginning.
- If prompted, update AGPS through the Zepp app; starting after positioning succeeds improves workout-data accuracy.
- Check that the selected activity and GPS mode are appropriate, and consider whether buildings, dense trees, tunnels or steep terrain obstructed satellite reception.
- Wear the watch securely so it stays in position during the workout.
Smartwatch features and phone compatibility
The GTR 4 handles everyday smartwatch basics: phone notifications, Bluetooth calls, music controls and storage, weather, calendar, to-do lists, watch faces, Alexa and mini-apps. It is not an Apple Watch or Wear OS replacement; its operating system is more focused and its third-party app selection is smaller. Message replies and assistant features are limited compared with a full smartwatch, and functionality differs by phone platform and region.
Calls are Bluetooth phone calls, not independent cellular calls: the watch has no SIM slot and must remain paired to the phone. Notebookcheck reported that call setup requires an additional Bluetooth-headset connection. Notebookcheck review

The Zepp app is required for setup and ongoing operation on iOS or Android. Setup pairs the phone using the QR code on the watch and may request access to notifications, contacts and calendar. Before relying on alerts or platform-specific features, check that the Zepp app has Bluetooth and notification permissions, that background activity is allowed, and that battery optimization or a Focus/Do Not Disturb mode is not suppressing alerts. Battery life and charging
Battery endurance is the GTR 4’s clearest advantage. Amazfit’s up-to-14-day typical-use claim is not a guarantee; Expert Reviews reported nearly two weeks in testing with always-on display disabled, and about eight hours of full-accuracy GPS use. The GPS figures of 25 hours high accuracy, 44 hours balanced and 52 hours power-saving are manufacturer estimates, not promises for every route or setting. Expert Reviews
Expect shorter intervals between charges if you use always-on display, continuous heart-rate, stress or SpO₂ monitoring, automatic workout detection, frequent GPS workouts, Bluetooth calls, music playback or repeated screen wake. Weak Bluetooth connections can also affect consumption. The manual specifically warns that continuous workout-status monitoring greatly reduces battery life. If your results fall well below the typical-use claim, reduce the features you do not need before concluding that the battery is defective. GTR 4 manual
Software age, updates and buying older stock
The GTR 4 launched on Zepp OS 2.0 but subsequently received documented Zepp OS 3.0 and 3.5 updates, as well as route-navigation firmware 3.17.0.2. Later features such as external sensor pairing, route import, Zepp Coach updates, HRV trends and Zepp Flow should not be assumed to be on a sealed old-stock watch out of the box. - Buyers paying close to the cost of a newer Amazfit model or a watch that better serves their priorities.
