The Amazon Halo Band is discontinued and no longer usable as a functioning health tracker. Amazon ended Halo support on July 31, 2023, and said the Band, other Halo devices, and the Halo app would stop functioning beginning August 1, 2023. A used Halo Band may still appear in marketplace listings, but it should be treated as obsolete hardware—not as a cheap alternative to a current fitness tracker.
What was the Amazon Halo Band?
Amazon Halo was a health-and-wellness service built around a wearable band, smartphone app, cloud-backed data, and subscription features. The original Halo Band launched in the United States on August 27, 2020.
Unlike a smartwatch or conventional fitness band, it had no screen. Amazon presented that screen-free design as a way to reduce distractions and make the device comfortable for continuous and overnight wear. The phone app handled the display, interpretation, coaching, and most of the product’s distinctive features.
The original Band was later joined by the Halo View, a fitness tracker with a screen, and the Halo Rise, a bedside sleep-tracking device. All were covered by Amazon’s 2023 Halo shutdown.

The battery and charging figures were manufacturer claims under unspecified conditions, not independent test results. Likewise, “water resistant” should not be upgraded to “waterproof” or treated as a guarantee for every water activity.
What did Amazon Halo track?
Activity
The Band tracked movement and presented activity information through the app. It was not a full smartwatch: there was no wrist display, notification stream, or on-device dashboard.

Sleep duration and other sleep information were among Halo’s central features. The available launch material establishes that sleep tracking existed, but it does not independently validate the accuracy of its sleep-stage or sleep-quality estimates.
Heart rate
The Band included a heart-rate monitor. Heart-rate data was one of the basic features Amazon said non-members could access under the original membership model. Halo was not a medical device and should not have been used to diagnose or monitor a heart condition.
Body
The Body feature used smartphone-camera computer vision to estimate body-fat percentage and related measurements. Users had to take scan images with a phone, making this a particularly sensitive feature from both health and privacy perspectives.
Amazon made accuracy claims comparing the feature with medical methods. Those were Amazon’s marketing claims, not independent clinical validation. Body results were best understood as estimates for observing trends—not as medical diagnoses or a replacement for professional testing.

Tone used machine learning to analyze vocal characteristics such as energy and positivity, with the aim of helping users understand how they might sound to other people. That made Halo unusual among fitness wearables, but also introduced obvious questions about subjectivity, privacy, and whether vocal characteristics can meaningfully represent a person’s emotional state.
Amazon stated that speech samples were processed locally on the customer’s phone, automatically deleted after processing, and not heard by Amazon or anyone else. Those were Amazon’s stated privacy practices, not an independently audited guarantee.
Labs
Halo Labs offered guided programs and experiments intended to encourage healthier habits. Amazon cited content and programs involving partners including Headspace, Orangetheory Fitness, SWEAT, and WW. Labs content disappeared with the Halo service.
Did Amazon Halo require a subscription?
Yes. At launch, Amazon sold the Band with six months of Halo membership for $64.99 during early access. Amazon listed the regular price as $99.99, with membership renewing at $3.99 per month after the introductory period.
These are historical U.S. launch prices from 2020, not current prices. Amazon said membership unlocked the full Halo experience, while non-members retained access to basic metrics including steps, sleep time, and heart rate.
The subscription mattered because Halo’s most distinctive functions—including Body, Tone, Labs, and advanced insights—were primarily features of the app and service rather than capabilities permanently stored in the wrist hardware.
Why did Amazon discontinue Halo?
Amazon announced the shutdown on April 26, 2023, saying it had made the difficult decision to stop supporting Amazon Halo effective July 31, 2023. The announcement explained the wind-down, refunds, data handling, and recycling guidance but did not give a detailed public explanation of the product’s business performance or a single reason for the closure.
Secondary reporting described the closure of Amazon’s Halo health division and associated layoffs. Possible contributing factors include the subscription model, unusual features such as Tone and Body, privacy concerns, competition from Fitbit, Garmin, Apple, Samsung, and smart rings, and the risk of tying hardware value to a cloud service. Those are reasonable analysis—not confirmed causes stated by Amazon.

Does the Amazon Halo Band still work?
No. Amazon said support ended July 31, 2023, and that the Halo Band, other Halo devices, and the app would no longer function beginning August 1, 2023.
The important distinction is that the Band was not simply a standalone pedometer. Its useful health insights depended on the Halo app and service. There is no verified, supported way to turn the old hardware into a generic Bluetooth heart-rate monitor or modern fitness tracker after the shutdown.
What happened to owners’ data and refunds?
Amazon’s original shutdown guidance told customers to download or delete Halo health data from the app’s Settings page before the service ended. For individual Body scan images, Amazon instructed users to open a scan, select the control next to the camera icon, and choose “Save images to phone.”
Amazon said remaining Halo health data would be deleted after August 1, 2023. That historical export deadline has passed, so readers should not assume that old Halo records can still be recovered. Anyone who needs to investigate a past refund or data request should contact Amazon directly, but the 2023 notice should not be read as a promise of current eligibility.

It also encouraged customers to recycle the Band and accessories through Amazon’s recycling program. Those were shutdown-era arrangements, not a current guaranteed refund policy.
Privacy and health-data concerns
Halo handled several sensitive categories of information:
- Activity, sleep, and heart-rate data.
- Body-scan images and body-composition estimates.
- Voice samples or voice-derived analysis from Tone.
- Account and app information.
Amazon said speech samples were analyzed locally on the phone and deleted after processing. It also said customers could download or delete Halo health data and that data was encrypted in transit and at rest in the cloud.
Those protections did not eliminate every privacy concern. The Band still included microphones, Body required camera-based scans, and the service placed intimate health information inside a cloud-connected commercial platform. Readers should also distinguish between Amazon’s privacy and security statements and independent verification of those claims.

No—not for normal health or fitness use. A marketplace listing can make the Band look like a bargain because the physical device still exists, but physical availability is not service availability.
Do not buy one expecting working:
- Step or activity tracking.
- Sleep tracking.
- Heart-rate monitoring.
- Body-fat estimates.
- Tone voice analysis.
- Halo Labs programs.
- A supported wearable experiment.
An old Band may have limited value as a piece of discontinued consumer technology, for product-history research, or for recycling. It should not be relied on for adult or child health monitoring, and old reviews from 2020–2023 describe a service that no longer exists.

No current product is an exact replacement for Halo’s combination of screenless design, cloud coaching, Body scans, and Tone analysis. Choose by use case instead.
For a screenless band: Google Fitbit Air
Google introduced Fitbit Air in May 2026 as a small, screenless tracker focused on 24/7 health monitoring, sleep tracking, and week-long battery life. It is the closest conceptual fit for former Halo users who primarily want a lightweight, display-free band.
Check current Fitbit plan requirements and availability before buying. Fitbit Air is not Amazon Halo, and its software and account model may not suit readers who want maximum data independence.

For a conventional fitness band: Fitbit Charge 6
Fitbit Charge 6 adds a display and provides more immediate on-device information than the original Halo Band. Google lists compatibility with most phones running Android 11 or newer and iOS 16.4 or newer.
It is a better fit for readers who want a mainstream fitness band, but it is not screen-free and some advanced Fitbit features may depend on Google or Fitbit software plans.

Oura is a stronger match for readers who mainly wanted unobtrusive sleep, readiness, recovery, stress, and activity insights. It has no wrist display and is designed for continuous wear.

For notifications, GPS, and apps: a current smartwatch
An Apple Watch or comparable Android-compatible smartwatch is the better choice for readers who want notifications, GPS, workout controls, emergency features, and a broad app ecosystem.
The trade-off is almost everything that made Halo distinctive: a larger device, a screen, more distraction, shorter typical battery life, and possible ecosystem restrictions. Choose according to the phone you use and verify current model support directly with the manufacturer.
How to choose a replacement
- Form factor: Choose a screenless band, display band, smart ring, bedside sensor, or full smartwatch.
- Subscription: Check whether advanced health features require a monthly or annual plan.
- Primary goal: Separate basic activity tracking from sleep and recovery, running, heart features, or smartwatch functions.
- Phone compatibility: Confirm iPhone and Android support before buying.
- Privacy: Check whether processing is on-device or cloud-based, and whether voice or camera data is involved.
- Data portability: Prefer products with clear export tools and a transparent support lifecycle.
- Service durability: Consider how much of the product remains useful if the manufacturer closes its cloud platform.
