Apple and Google’s cross-platform unwanted-tracking alerts are real, but they are not a new 2026 feature. Apple added support for the Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers (DULT) specification in iOS 17.5, released in May 2024, while Google made automated unknown-tracker alerts available on Android 6.0 and later.
The system can warn an iPhone or Android user when a compatible Bluetooth tracker appears to be separated from its owner and traveling with them over time. It does not detect every tracking device, provide instant protection, or turn Apple’s Find My and Google’s Find Hub into one shared network.
What “cross-platform” tracker alerts mean
Apple and Google announced their unwanted-tracking collaboration on May 13, 2024. The goal was to reduce the risk that Bluetooth item trackers could be hidden in someone’s belongings or vehicle and used for covert location monitoring.
An Android phone can therefore warn about a compatible AirTag, even though the AirTag is associated with Apple’s Find My ecosystem. Conversely, an iPhone can warn about a compatible tracker designed for Google’s Find Hub network.

This is cross-platform detection, not cross-platform management. An Android phone does not become a universal AirTag-management app, and an iPhone does not gain full control over every Find Hub tracker. Detection depends on the tracker supporting the relevant specification, network, and software behavior.

Which phones and trackers are covered?

Google’s current documentation covers Apple AirTags, Find Hub-compatible tags, and some compatible headphones and earbuds. Its device-specific instructions include Apple AirTag, Chipolo CARD and ONE, Motorola moto tag, and Pebblebee Card, Clip, and Tag.

Do not read “Bluetooth tracker” as “every tracker.” Ordinary Bluetooth devices, unsupported tracker systems, cellular GPS units, and modified or noncompliant devices may not trigger these alerts. Hardware revisions, regional availability, phone manufacturers, and software updates can also affect behavior.

Does an alert prove someone is stalking you?
No. An alert means the phone has identified a compatible tracker that may not belong to you and appears to have moved with you over time. It is a reason to investigate safely, not proof that a particular person is following you.
Legitimate explanations include:
- A borrowed bag, suitcase, set of keys, or vehicle.
- Traveling with a family member, friend, or colleague who owns a tracker.
- A shared household or workplace item.
- A misplaced tracker that has become separated from its owner.
A manual scan can be even less conclusive: it may find a nearby tracker in an apartment, office, vehicle, or crowded train without showing that it has traveled with you.

What to do if an iPhone displays an alert
- Tap the notification and review the map showing where the tracker was detected traveling with you.
- Tap Play Sound, when available, to help locate the device.
- Search bags, luggage, clothing, vehicles, children’s items, and other objects carried along the route.
- Review the tracker’s identifying information and follow the manufacturer’s instructions to disable it.
- Save screenshots, the map, date and time, model, serial number, and photographs of where it was found if the situation may require an investigation.
Apple’s newer cross-platform DULT support requires iOS 17.5 or later. That is separate from Apple’s earlier AirTag and Find My unwanted-tracking protections, which began with iOS/iPadOS 14.5.
For compatible alerts, check that these settings are available and enabled. Menu wording may vary slightly by iOS release or language:
Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services- Within Location Services:
System Services > Find My iPhone Settings > BluetoothSettings > Notifications > Tracking Notifications > Allow Notifications

What to do if Android displays an alert
- Tap the Unknown tracker alert notification.
- Open the map to see places where the tracker was detected traveling with you.
- Tap Play sound. Google says this does not notify the tracker owner.
- Search for the physical tracker.
- Tap Next steps for its type, manufacturer, identification details, and disabling instructions.
- Preserve screenshots, the tracker ID, and photographs if you may need evidence.
Android may identify the tracker type and manufacturer. Bringing an AirTag near the back of an Android phone may reveal additional information.

A manual scan looks for compatible trackers currently nearby. It takes about 10 seconds, according to Google, but finding a device does not by itself establish that it has been following you.
- Android 12 and newer:
Settings > Safety & emergency > Unknown tracker alerts > Scan now - Android 11 and older:
Settings > Google > Personal & device safety > Unknown tracker alerts > Scan now
Google says Android 11 and newer can manually scan without Location enabled, while Android 10 and older use Location and Bluetooth for manual scanning. Automated alerts require Location to be enabled. The feature is delivered through Android system or Google Play services updates, so receiving it does not necessarily require a complete Android-version upgrade.
Why an alert may be delayed—or never appear
These systems are not real-time proximity alarms. They are designed to reduce false positives from brief encounters with another person’s tracker, so they generally require the phone and tracker to move together over time.
Google says a recently separated tracker may not generate an immediate alert and that the system generally sends only one alert per tracker per day. Other limitations include:

- The tracker may still be near its owner.
- The phone may be outside Bluetooth range or have relevant services disabled.
- The tracker may not support DULT or the relevant Apple/Google network.
- Changing random Bluetooth identifiers can complicate recognition.
- A tracker may be hidden somewhere difficult to search.
A missing alert is therefore not proof that no tracker is present. Google’s alert history may also be deleted after 48 hours, so save important information promptly.

Turning off Bluetooth, Location Services, or enabling Airplane Mode on your phone does not turn off the physical tracker. Those actions may prevent or delay alerts, but the tracker can continue transmitting and its owner may continue receiving location updates through the relevant network.
The tracker must be disabled using the manufacturer’s instructions. However, disabling it immediately is not always the safest choice. If someone may have planted it deliberately, disabling the device could alert or provoke them. Consider preserving evidence and seeking help before taking action when personal safety is a concern.
If you cannot find the tracker
- Retrace the route shown on the alert map.
- Search the car, luggage, clothing, bags, and borrowed objects.
- Run additional manual scans where available.
- Check again later if the tracker remains present.
- Consider a professional vehicle inspection or law-enforcement assistance if searching could be dangerous.
Trackers can be hidden under seats, inside trim, in wheel wells or spare-tire compartments, in bag linings, or in coat pockets. Do not confront a suspected person if doing so could increase the risk to you. Move to a public location and contact a trusted person, law enforcement, or an appropriate stalking or domestic-violence support service.
Can the owner be identified?
Sometimes a tracker can reveal limited identifying information, but do not expect the phone to provide the owner’s name or account details. With an AirTag, NFC interaction and the information screen may show details such as the serial number or limited owner information.

Apple says law enforcement can request available information from Apple when an AirTag, AirPods, or Find My accessory is involved in unlawful tracking. Preserve the alert, serial number, device make and model, map, time, and location where the device was found before disabling or discarding it. This is general evidence-preservation guidance, not legal advice.
What this means when buying a tracker
Do not buy an item tracker as a solution to suspected stalking. For ordinary ownership, the important question in a mixed iPhone/Android household is whether the specific model supports the current unwanted-tracking standard—not merely whether it uses Bluetooth.
- Apple AirTag: designed for the Find My ecosystem and relevant because Android can warn about an unknown AirTag.
- Chipolo Find Hub-compatible trackers: intended for Google’s Find Hub ecosystem, with the company documenting unwanted-tracking support on Android 6+ and iOS 17.5+.
- Motorola moto tag: a Find Hub-compatible family listed in Google’s disabling instructions.
- Pebblebee Card, Clip, and Tag: Find Hub-compatible form factors listed in Google’s support documentation.
Before buying, verify the exact model’s compatibility, network coverage, battery and replacement options, water resistance, form factor, subscription requirements, sharing features, and instructions for disabling a found device. Do not assume every model behaves identically across phones or regions.

Apple and Google’s anti-stalking Bluetooth alerts have been available since May 2024, and they materially improve protection for iPhone and Android users. They can detect supported cross-platform trackers such as AirTags and compatible Find Hub devices, but they are a detection-and-response system—not a universal tracker detector, instant alarm, or guarantee that every stalking attempt will be found.
