Apple did eventually add Notes to the Apple Watch—but not in watchOS 10. The native Notes app arrived with watchOS 26, two years after the original request. It handles the wrist-sized jobs that matter most: reading iCloud notes, creating quick notes with Siri or dictation, and checking off shopping-list items. It is useful, but it is not a full version of Notes: existing notes cannot be edited on the watch, and some formatting and attachments are unavailable.

The original request was modest

On May 18, 2023, Gizmodo published an editorial asking Apple to bring Notes to the Apple Watch. The request was not for a miniature iPhone interface or full document-authoring suite. It was for basic access to information already stored in Apple’s ecosystem.

The practical examples were straightforward:

  • Read a shopping list while walking through a store.
  • Check a reminder without taking an iPhone out of a pocket or bag.
  • Dictate a fleeting thought while occupied.
  • Type a short note with the Apple Watch keyboard.
  • Stop using the workaround of texting yourself.

That made the missing app feel unusual. Apple Notes already synchronized through iCloud across the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, while the watch was close enough to the wrist to be ideal for quick reference and capture. The original argument explicitly accepted a simplified interface, as long as the watch could display existing notes and create basic ones. Read the original Gizmodo request.

watchOS 10 did not solve it

Apple previewed watchOS 10 on June 5, 2023, and released it in September. It was a major Apple Watch update, with redesigned apps that used more of the display, new navigation behavior, a more capable Smart Stack, and updates for cycling, hiking, Mindfulness, and daylight-related features.

But there was no native Apple Notes app. A Smart Stack could make information easier to reach, but it was not a synchronized Notes client. So any article claiming that watchOS 10 introduced Apple Notes is incorrect. Apple’s watchOS 10 feature documentation does not list a first-party Notes app.

Apple finally added Notes in watchOS 26

The change came on June 9, 2025, when Apple announced Notes for Apple Watch as part of watchOS 26. Apple’s implementation closely matches the original request without attempting to reproduce every iPhone Notes feature on a tiny display.

According to Apple, the watch app can display iCloud notes, pin and unlock notes, create new notes with Siri, dictation, or the keyboard, and complete checklist items. Apple’s watchOS 26 announcement confirms the feature and its headline capabilities.

What Notes can do on Apple Watch

Read existing iCloud notes

Open Notes on the watch to browse pinned notes first, followed by recent notes. To find older material, Apple’s Watch guide says you can expand the list by month and year. This is the part that most directly answers the original grocery-list and reference-note request.

Create a note with Siri

Say:

“Siri, start a new note.”

You can then dictate the content. This provides the quick-capture workflow the original article wanted, although dictation should be treated as a convenience rather than a guarantee of perfect transcription. Noise, language settings, accents, connectivity, and ambiguous phrasing can all affect voice input.

Create a note manually

  1. Open the Notes app on Apple Watch.
  2. Tap New Note.
  3. Enter text using the available input method.
  4. Tap Done to save it.

Complete checklist items

Open a checklist note and tap an item to mark it complete. The change synchronizes through iCloud, making this the strongest match for the original shopping-list scenario: you can use the watch as a list rather than repeatedly reaching for your phone.

Pin and unlock notes

Pinned notes appear at the top for quicker access. Apple also says the watch can unlock notes, subject to the behavior and security requirements of Apple Notes. Sensitive-note workflows may not behave identically across the watch and other Apple devices, so the watch should not be treated as a universal replacement for the iPhone Notes app.

What the watch still cannot do

Apple Notes on the watch is deliberately limited. Apple’s current Apple Watch user guide documents several restrictions:

  • No editing existing notes: To change existing text, use an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
  • Some formatting is unavailable: A note may not look identical to its full version on another device.
  • Tables are not visible: Notes built around tables are a poor fit for the watch.
  • Audio recordings are not visible: The watch is not a complete viewer for every Notes attachment type.

That means the app is best understood as a synchronized capture-and-reference tool. It is excellent for reading a short list, adding a new thought, or checking off an item. It is not a wrist-sized document editor.

How to set up Apple Notes on the watch

Check compatibility first

Apple’s watchOS 26 announcement lists support for Apple Watch Series 6 or later, Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), and all Apple Watch Ultra models, paired with an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26. Compatibility can depend on the exact model and operating-system combination, so confirm the current requirements on Apple’s update documentation before upgrading.

Turn on iCloud Notes

  1. On the iPhone, open Settings.
  2. Tap your Apple Account.
  3. Tap iCloud.
  4. Make sure Notes is enabled.
  5. Confirm that the notes you want are stored in the iCloud folder, rather than under “On My iPhone,” Gmail, Exchange, or another account.

The watch app depends on iCloud synchronization. Turning on Notes for another account does not automatically make those notes available in the Apple Watch app.

If notes do not appear

Check these points in order:

  1. Verify that iCloud Notes is enabled on the iPhone.
  2. Open Notes on the iPhone and confirm the missing note is in an iCloud folder.
  3. Check that the watch is paired with the expected iPhone and Apple Account.
  4. Give synchronization time to complete.
  5. Restart the iPhone and Apple Watch if syncing remains stuck.
  6. Install the latest compatible watchOS update.

If a note appears incomplete, it may not be a synchronization failure. Tables, audio recordings, and some formatting are documented as unsupported or invisible on the watch. Likewise, inability to change existing text is a product limitation, not necessarily an account problem.

Is a third-party notes app still worth it?

For most Apple Notes users, the native app is now the obvious first choice. Apple lists Notes as free, and its watch support covers viewing iCloud notes, pinning notes, completing checklist items, and creating notes with dictation or Siri. See Apple Notes in the App Store.

A third-party app may still be worthwhile if you specifically need to edit existing text directly on the watch, want a wrist-first layout with complications or color organization, do not use Apple Notes, or prefer a dedicated one-purpose notepad. One example, Notes for Apple Watch from Kpaw, LLC, advertises browsing, editing, composing, synchronization, color organization, and FlickType keyboard support. Its listing showed a free download with in-app purchases, including Premium options priced at $3.99 and $5.99 when viewed.

Those are App Store claims, not independent reliability tests. A third-party app also adds another vendor, sync system, possible purchase, and maintenance risk. For ordinary grocery lists and quick notes, that trade-off is difficult to justify when Apple’s native app already integrates with iCloud at no extra charge.

The verdict: Apple delivered the right idea, late and incompletely

The original request was fulfilled in spirit, but the timeline matters. watchOS 10 did not add Notes. Apple announced the native app two years later with watchOS 26.

Apple also made a sensible design choice by limiting the watch to tasks that suit its screen: glance at a note, capture a new thought, and check off a list item. The result is not full Apple Notes, but it addresses the practical problem better than a feature-heavy editor would. If you already use iCloud Notes and have compatible hardware, Apple’s built-in app is now the default solution. If your priority is editing existing notes on your wrist, a third-party app may still have a reason to exist.
