Apple released AirPods firmware 6F21 on October 22, 2024. It applied to the first-generation AirPods Pro, second- and third-generation AirPods, and the Lightning-version AirPods Max. Apple’s only published description was “Bug fixes and other improvements.”
6F21 is now a historical release, not the latest firmware for the AirPods lineup. As of August 18, 2026, Apple lists later model-specific versions, including 6F25, 7E108, and multiple 8-series releases. Check your exact model before deciding whether an update is needed.
Which AirPods received firmware 6F21?

The distinction between Lightning and USB-C AirPods Max matters. They are not interchangeable for firmware purposes, and a version number cannot be judged without first identifying the hardware model.
Apple replaced firmware 6A326 with 6F21 on the affected models. This was an AirPods device-firmware update—not an iOS, iPadOS, macOS, or standalone app update.

What changed in 6F21?
Apple’s official release note says only:
“Bug fixes and other improvements.”
Apple did not publish a detailed fix list or identify a new consumer-facing feature. It is therefore not accurate to claim that 6F21 added better battery life, improved sound quality, lower latency, stronger Bluetooth performance, or any other specific benefit.
Those improvements are possible outcomes of bug fixes, but they are not confirmed 6F21-specific changes. The update also should not be confused with later firmware associated with features such as Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, Hearing Protection, head-gesture controls, Voice Isolation, Adaptive Audio, or lossless and ultra-low-latency audio.

For example, Apple associates hearing features for compatible AirPods Pro 2 models with firmware 7B19, while lossless and low-latency audio for USB-C AirPods Max was associated with 7E101. Those features do not belong to the 6F21 release.

No. Apple’s firmware list, published June 18, 2026, includes later releases such as 6F25, 7E108, 8A356, 8A357, 8A358, 8B21, 8B25, 8B28, 8B30, 8B34, 8B39, 8B40, 8E251, 8B41, and 8E258.

The correct version depends on the exact AirPods model. Do not treat 6F21 as a universal target or assume that a version other than 6F21 means something is wrong. A different firmware branch may be the correct one for your AirPods.
Status as of August 18, 2026: 6F21 is a historical release. Use Apple’s current AirPods firmware table to identify the appropriate version for your model.

How to check your AirPods firmware version
On an iPhone or iPad
- Connect the AirPods.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Bluetooth.
- Find the AirPods in the device list.
- Tap the Info button next to them.
- Check Firmware Version.
On a Mac
- Connect the AirPods.
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Bluetooth.
- Click the Info button next to the AirPods.
Compare the displayed version with Apple’s model-specific list, rather than simply looking for 6F21. This is especially important for AirPods Pro 2, USB-C AirPods Max, AirPods 4, and first-generation AirPods.
How AirPods firmware updates install
There is no ordinary Update Firmware button in iOS, iPadOS, or macOS, and Apple does not provide a selectable firmware package. The documented process encourages the update to occur automatically.

- Update the paired iPhone, iPad, or Mac to the latest available operating-system version.
- Turn on Bluetooth.
- Connect the AirPods by Bluetooth.
- Connect the iPhone, iPad, or Mac to Wi-Fi.
- Connect the AirPods charging case to power.
- Put the AirPods in the case and close the lid.
- Keep the closed case within Bluetooth range of the Apple device for at least 30 minutes.
- Open the lid, reconnect the AirPods, and check the firmware version again.
For AirPods Max
- Connect AirPods Max to the iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
- Make sure Bluetooth is on and the host device is connected to Wi-Fi.
- Plug the charging cable into the bottom of the right earcup.
- Keep AirPods Max within Bluetooth range.
- Wait at least 30 minutes.
- Reconnect and check the firmware version.
If the firmware does not update
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the exact AirPods model.
- Update the connected iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
- Turn Bluetooth off and on, then reconnect.
- Confirm that the host device has Wi-Fi access.
- Charge the case or AirPods Max.
- Repeat the powered, nearby setup for at least 30 minutes with the case closed.
- Reopen the case and check the version again.
- If the update still does not appear, reset the AirPods or AirPods Max and retry.
Apple recommends resetting the AirPods when firmware does not update, but a reset is not a guaranteed trigger. It can also remove the pairing state, so you may need to reconnect the AirPods afterward.
If you do not have a nearby iPhone, iPad, or Mac, Apple says you can arrange an appointment at an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider. Availability, eligibility, and possible fees vary by location and should be confirmed before visiting.
Should you replace older AirPods because of 6F21?
Not simply because the firmware is old. If your AirPods work properly, have acceptable battery life, and already run the latest version available for their model, there is no need to replace them for this reason.

For used or refurbished AirPods, verify the model, condition, battery performance, and authenticity separately. Firmware behavior alone is not a complete authenticity test.
