Apple has not confirmed that it has permanently halted Vision Pro production or abandoned the headset category. Reports indicate sharply reduced manufacturing of the current model, a pause to at least one cheaper headset project, and a shift of some staff toward AI-powered smart glasses. Vision Pro remains available from Apple, and the company released an M5 version in October 2025.
The more accurate reading is a strategic retreat from an expensive, heavy headset—not proof that Apple has exited spatial computing.
What Apple has reportedly halted
The headline combines several separate developments. According to The Information, Apple sharply reduced Vision Pro production and could suspend assembly of the current model. The report said production might resume if demand improves and that assembly lines were not being dismantled.
The same report attributed production figures to supply-chain sources, including an assembly rate of about 1,000 units per day at Luxshare, down from roughly 2,000 at its peak. It also reported that suppliers held components for approximately 500,000 to 600,000 headsets. These are reported supply-chain figures, not numbers Apple has confirmed publicly.

That distinction matters. “Could suspend assembly” is not the same as a confirmed permanent shutdown, and reduced production does not necessarily mean retail stock has disappeared or that existing owners will lose support.
The cheaper headset project was reportedly paused
In a separate report dated October 1, 2025, Bloomberg said Apple had paused development of a cheaper, lighter headset, reportedly known internally as N100. Staff were said to have been reassigned toward AI-focused smart-glasses work.
This is different from canceling every future Vision product. A company can pause a particular design, delay a successor, redirect employees, or merge projects without formally ending an entire product strategy. Apple has not publicly announced that Vision Pro 2 is canceled, nor has it announced a permanent exit from spatial computing.

Apple does not separately disclose Vision Pro unit sales or revenue in its standard public reporting. The claim that sales “collapsed” therefore describes third-party estimates and inferred demand weakness, not an Apple-reported sales figure.

The Information cited Counterpoint estimates of roughly 370,000 Vision Pro units sold during the first three quarters of the reported year, with about 50,000 more expected by year-end. The report compared that performance with much higher sales of Meta Quest headsets, but the comparison needs context: Quest devices are dramatically cheaper and target a broader consumer market.
The available evidence supports language such as weak demand, sales below Apple’s ambitions, and conservative inventory management. It does not justify presenting “sales collapse” as a confirmed company metric.
Why Vision Pro may be struggling
Vision Pro launched in the United States on February 2, 2024, with a starting price of $3,499. Apple’s current M5 model still starts at $3,499 in the U.S., before optional accessories, AppleCare, and prescription inserts. Apple lists ZEISS reader inserts at $99 and prescription inserts at $149 in its U.S. announcement.
Price is only one obstacle. Reviews and industry coverage have repeatedly raised concerns about the headset’s weight and comfort, its external battery and cable, and the difficulty of wearing it for long periods. A headset that must be removed for ordinary social interaction also has a narrower daily role than conventional glasses.

- High entry cost: the price limits Vision Pro mainly to enthusiasts, developers, professionals, and enterprise buyers.
- Physical burden: a separate headset and battery are less convenient than eyewear users can wear throughout the day.
- Limited everyday utility: immersive video and spatial computing can be impressive without becoming essential for most consumers.
- Smaller ecosystem: visionOS has an expanding app and content catalog, but its installed base is far smaller than mainstream computing platforms.
- Cheaper competition: Meta Quest offers a more accessible route into VR and mixed reality, although direct unit comparisons are not like-for-like.
No single factor has been established as the sole cause of weak demand. Together, they expose a mismatch between a premium “spatial computer” and a mass market increasingly interested in lighter wearables.
What Apple is reportedly building instead
The reported pivot points toward AI-oriented smart glasses, closer in concept to Meta’s camera-and-audio glasses than to Vision Pro.
Those categories should not be confused:

Bloomberg’s report described Apple’s effort as an attempt to compete with Meta’s products. It did not establish final specifications, a price, a release date, or commercial availability. Claims that Apple’s glasses will definitely include a display, replace the iPhone, or launch in a particular year remain unconfirmed.

Glasses could give Apple a more natural and socially acceptable wearable than a full headset. They could potentially extend Apple’s ecosystem into hands-free audio, cameras, voice interaction, notifications, and AI assistance while relying on an iPhone or another nearby device for some processing.

But the form factor brings serious constraints:
- Small frames leave little room for batteries and processing hardware.
- Heat dissipation is difficult near the user’s face.
- Cameras raise privacy and social-acceptance concerns.
- Speakers can leak sound, while microphones must work in noisy environments.
- A useful display adds weight, thickness, cost, and optical complexity.
- Prescription lenses, fit, regional regulations, and connectivity complicate the product.
Apple would also be entering a category where Meta has already established consumer awareness. A lighter product could sell to more people, but it might deliver less of the immersive experience that Apple used to distinguish Vision Pro.

Evidence against the “Apple killed Vision Pro” interpretation is straightforward: Apple’s official U.S. store continues to list the device.
Apple announced an M5-equipped Vision Pro on October 15, 2025, alongside visionOS 26 and a new Dual Knit Band. Apple advertises up to 2.5 hours of general use and up to 3 hours of video playback for the M5 model. The company continues to promote visionOS applications, spatial experiences, and Apple Immersive content.

It does show that a reported production cut is not equivalent to an announced product cancellation. Software support, retail availability, and future hardware development are separate decisions.

The future roadmap remains unresolved
Reporting in 2026 is conflicting. Coverage of a June 3, 2026 roadmap report from Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that Vision Pro successors had disappeared from the visible roadmap. The same 9to5Mac report noted contrary expectations from Mark Gurman, who reportedly anticipated a slimmer headset much later, around 2028 or 2029.
Neither account should be treated as an official Apple roadmap. Internal projects can be delayed, renamed, merged, or canceled before launch. The safest conclusion is that Apple’s near-term headset plans are uncertain and appear less aggressive than the company’s original Vision Pro ambitions.
What this means for buyers
Buy Vision Pro now if:
- you specifically want premium spatial video, Mac Virtual Display, visionOS applications, or Apple Immersive content;
- you are an enterprise, developer, or enthusiast buyer who can justify the $3,499 starting price;
- you are comfortable buying for the product’s current capabilities rather than a rumored successor.
Wait if:
- your priority is a lighter Apple wearable;
- you expect a cheaper headset;
- you would be disappointed if a near-term Vision Pro successor is delayed or never ships.
Do not buy based on an alleged Apple-glasses launch date. Apple has not confirmed the product’s specifications, price, timing, or availability.
What it means for owners and developers
Existing owners have no evidence of an immediate support cutoff. Apple continues to list Vision Pro, visionOS, apps, content, and accessories. Nevertheless, buyers should consider regional availability and service limitations, particularly for imported or used units; Apple’s Vision Pro services and sales arrangements vary by country.
For developers, the trade-off is significant. A headset-first strategy offers powerful sensors, displays, and spatial APIs but a small installed base. Smart glasses could reach a much larger audience while offering less processing power and fewer display-driven experiences.
Developers should build around released visionOS APIs and verified customer demand, not rumored glasses schedules. Apple may preserve software investments in spatial APIs, visionOS, and Apple Intelligence even if it changes the hardware roadmap, but unannounced hardware should not underpin a business plan.
