Apple is reportedly working on satellite-based mapping and navigation for iPhone and Apple Watch, but satellite maps are not a released Apple Maps feature. Reports attributed to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and repeated in November 2025 describe a project that could let users exchange limited map or route data when cellular and Wi‑Fi networks are unavailable. Apple has announced no launch date, compatible-device list, supported regions, pricing, or final technical design.
For watch buyers, the practical distinction is important: Apple Watch Ultra 3 already has built-in two-way satellite communication, while the rumored mapping project should not be treated as a reason to buy any Apple Watch today.
What Apple is reportedly planning
The reported project would extend Apple’s existing satellite services beyond emergency communication. Coverage of the Bloomberg report describes possible satellite-enabled Apple Maps or navigation on iPhone and Apple Watch, a framework that third-party apps could use, richer satellite messaging, easier satellite acquisition, and improved operation when the phone is in a pocket, vehicle, or other difficult position. Reports also mention future 5G Non-Terrestrial Network support and continued work with Globalstar and related infrastructure.

The core claim has been repeated by Gizchina, Techmeme’s report roundup, and Ceppek’s summary. None establishes a release timetable or confirms that every iPhone or Apple Watch will support it.

“Satellite maps” can mean three different things
Satellite imagery
Apple Maps already offers an imagery map layer when data is available. That is aerial or orbital photography delivered through an ordinary internet connection; it is not a satellite radio link from the phone or watch.
Satellite positioning
GPS and other navigation satellites can help a device calculate its position without cellular service. Positioning alone does not deliver current maps, route calculations, traffic, road closures, or two-way messages.
Satellite communications for maps
The reported Apple project most likely concerns this third category: sending compact requests and receiving limited map or navigation information over a satellite connection. It should not be described as live satellite imagery downloaded from orbit. A practical version could show a cached map, a route line, an arrow, distance to the next turn, or an occasional position update rather than the full online Apple Maps experience.

- Emergency SOS via satellite.
- Find My location sharing via satellite.
- Messages via satellite in supported markets and carrier configurations.
- Roadside Assistance via satellite in supported regions.
- Carrier-provided satellite services where a wireless operator offers them.
Apple’s requirements and regional limitations are listed in its iPhone satellite support documentation. Apple introduced Emergency SOS and Find My via satellite with iPhone 14 in its 2022 announcement.
Apple Watch Ultra 3
Apple Watch Ultra 3 is the first Apple Watch model for which Apple describes built-in, independent two-way satellite communication. Apple lists satellite Emergency SOS, messaging friends and family, and Find My location sharing. It also describes automatic emergency communication after certain severe crashes or hard falls when conditions allow.
Apple says Ultra 3 can send texts, emoji, Tapbacks, and SMS by satellite, and can share a Find My location with previously added contacts approximately every 15 minutes. Satellite features are included for two years after activation. Emergency SOS does not require a cellular plan, while messaging and some other functions have additional requirements and availability limits. See Apple’s Ultra 3 announcement, support page, and watchOS guide.

Do not assume other Apple Watches have satellite radios
Standard Apple Watch models should not be treated as independent satellite communicators. Earlier watch safety functions could use an iPhone’s satellite connection in limited situations; that is different from having a satellite radio and antenna in the watch itself. Apple’s original iPhone 14 announcement described some Apple Watch safety behavior as dependent on a connected iPhone 14 running the required software.

What using satellite communication is like today
Satellite features generally require the user to be outdoors with a clear view of the sky and horizon. Buildings, dense foliage, mountains, vehicle roofs, and other obstructions can prevent or delay a connection. Apple notes that connection time varies with surroundings, location, message length, and network availability. Satellite communication is slower and more constrained than cellular messaging.
For Emergency SOS, Apple says to try calling emergency services normally first. If the call cannot connect, the iPhone can guide you into a satellite session through the Emergency SOS procedure. A satellite session is an emergency workflow, not a general-purpose replacement for voice calling.
Roadside Assistance via satellite works with iPhone 14 or later in the United States (including Puerto Rico), the United Kingdom, and Australia, subject to provider and regional restrictions. In the United States, Apple identifies AAA and Verizon pathways; the provider may charge, with pricing shown before dispatch. Details are on Apple’s Roadside Assistance support page. Messages via satellite are documented separately, and SMS availability depends on the carrier (Apple’s Messages support page).
Why satellite navigation is difficult
- Bandwidth: Existing services are optimized for short text and compact data, not continuous map browsing or imagery.
- Latency: Acquiring a satellite and completing a transmission can take substantially longer than loading a cellular map tile.
- Line of sight: A watch under a canopy, inside a building, in a canyon, or inside a vehicle may not maintain a link.
- Power: Satellite transmissions demand more radio and antenna effort than ordinary Bluetooth or cellular use.
- Data volume: Full map databases, business listings, alternate routes, traffic, and road-closure feeds are too large or too dynamic for simple satellite delivery.
- Moving spacecraft: The device must acquire and maintain alignment with satellites passing overhead.
- Capacity: A network built for occasional emergency messages is not automatically able to serve millions of simultaneous map requests during a disaster.
- Regulation: Spectrum, country approvals, carrier agreements, emergency-service integration, and ground infrastructure all affect availability.
These constraints explain why a useful product would probably rely heavily on on-device data. Apple could ask users to download a region first, send only a destination or waypoint by satellite, and return a compact route instruction. A watch could display an arrow and distance while the iPhone performs heavier route processing. Those are plausible engineering approaches, not confirmed Apple implementation details.

The Globalstar connection
Apple said its original satellite emergency service required a $450 million investment in satellite and ground infrastructure, with most funding going to Globalstar. The service uses Globalstar’s low-Earth-orbit network, ground stations, and mobile-satellite-service spectrum. Apple’s infrastructure announcement is available at Apple Newsroom.
Globalstar has described replacement satellites, expanded ground infrastructure, and a third-generation C-3 system intended to increase coverage and capacity. Its corporate disclosures discuss those plans at this release and in this filing. A later filing describes an arrangement involving Apple, Amazon’s satellite network, and related infrastructure (Globalstar disclosure). That is an ecosystem development, not proof that satellite Apple Maps is imminent.

5G Non-Terrestrial Networks use cellular standards and compatible devices or carriers to extend coverage through satellites. That differs from Apple’s direct satellite emergency features:
| Approach | What it means |
|---|---|
| Direct satellite communication | The device communicates with a satellite using specialized hardware and Apple’s service framework. |
| Carrier satellite service | A wireless operator integrates satellite connectivity into its mobile network. |
| 5G NTN | A standards-based method for extending network coverage through satellites. |
5G NTN may broaden future connectivity, but it does not automatically enable satellite Apple Maps. Hardware, carrier agreements, spectrum, software, regional approvals, and network capacity would still be required. Apple distinguishes its own satellite features from carrier services in its support documentation.

Could satellite maps replace offline maps?
For planned travel, downloading maps before leaving coverage remains the more dependable solution. Offline maps avoid satellite latency and bandwidth limits, although they cannot provide live traffic or current road conditions. Apple Maps, Google Maps, Gaia GPS, onX, and AllTrails all offer forms of offline planning; exact regional coverage, subscription tiers, and navigation behavior should be checked on each provider’s current page.
| Option | Best for | Main advantage | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Future Apple satellite maps | Existing Apple users | Potentially integrated iPhone and Watch experience | Unannounced, bandwidth-limited, and not available to buy today |
| Offline Apple or Google maps | Planned trips | No satellite connection or satellite subscription required | No live updates outside coverage |
| Apple Watch Ultra 3 | Apple users wanting integrated off-grid safety | Built-in satellite communication | Premium watch; not confirmed as a full satellite-navigation device |
| Dedicated messenger | Frequent backcountry users | Mature SOS, tracking, and messaging workflows | Separate hardware and recurring service plan |
Dedicated options such as Garmin inReach and ZOLEO are designed around satellite messaging, tracking, and SOS today. They require carrying another device and usually paying for a service plan, but they do not depend on an unannounced Apple Maps feature.
Should you buy an iPhone or Apple Watch for satellite maps?
No—do not buy hardware solely for the rumored feature. Choose a device according to capabilities available now:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Need Apple satellite safety on a phone? Check that the specific iPhone 14-or-later model and purchase region support the service, then verify software, carrier, and activation requirements.
- Need independent satellite communication on a watch? Apple’s confirmed option is Apple Watch Ultra 3, not the Apple Watch line generally.
- Need reliable two-way backcountry messaging and tracking? Compare a dedicated satellite messenger and its coverage and plan terms.
- Need navigation on a planned trip? Download maps and routes before departure, and carry a power bank or backup navigation method.
- Expecting live traffic or unrestricted maps? Assume those functions may remain unavailable or heavily limited over satellite, even if Apple launches the project.
Also check the fine print: Apple has included some satellite services for a limited period after activation, while provider charges and future pricing for expanded services are unknown. Watch Ultra 3’s satellite operation can be affected if the nearby iPhone is in Airplane Mode, according to Apple’s support notes.
Bottom line
Apple appears to be exploring a move from satellite emergency communication toward broader navigation and app connectivity on iPhone and Apple Watch. The likely product would exchange compact route or location data, probably alongside maps cached in advance—not stream live satellite imagery or reproduce full online Apple Maps. Until Apple confirms a launch, supported hardware, regions, and pricing, treat satellite maps as a reported future project. Buy today for the satellite functions your device already provides, or choose offline maps or a dedicated messenger for dependable off-grid use.
