Apple seeded watchOS 11 beta 4 to developers on July 23, 2024. The prerelease update drew attention for reported Activity and Fitness changes, including pausing Activity Rings and setting different goals for different days. It was a developer test release—not a final public update—and it is now an archival release, not the current watchOS beta. Contemporary coverage of the release reported the date and user-facing changes; Apple’s release-note index now lists later watchOS releases.
What changed in watchOS 11 beta 4?
The most visible changes reported when the beta arrived concerned Activity and the Fitness app. They were features observed in prerelease software, so they should not be read as a guarantee that every detail remained unchanged in the final release.
- Pause Activity Rings: Users could take a break for a rest day, injury, or other interruption without affecting an award streak.
- Set goals by day: Activity Ring goals could be customized for different days of the week, rather than relying on one target every day.
- Customize the Fitness Summary: The Summary tab could be tailored to show selected metrics, including friends’ activity.
These were refinements to watchOS 11’s health-and-fitness direction, not all-new features of the beta. Vitals and Training Load had appeared in earlier watchOS 11 beta coverage; they were not among the changes specifically reported for beta 4. BGR’s contemporary report describes the Activity and Fitness additions.
Why the release mattered to developers
For app teams, the point of a developer seed was to test compatibility before the public release, not simply to try new Activity controls. Teams could check watchOS 11 behavior on real hardware, especially where an app depended on health or fitness data, notifications, background activity, complications, or communication with its paired iPhone. A simulator helps with parts of that work, but cannot reproduce watch sensors, battery behavior, or every real-device interaction.

Apple’s watchOS 11 release notes are the primary reference for SDK changes, resolved and known issues, API behavior, and compatibility details. They document the watchOS 11 SDK as bundled with Xcode 16. One Beta 4-era developer-facing change was that certain keys began sorting lexicographically according to their UTF-8 contents. Developers should consult the notes for the exact affected behavior rather than assume it applies to every collection of keys.
How developers installed the beta
Apple’s documented installation route used the paired iPhone and the Watch app’s software-update settings. Menu availability could vary with the device’s software version and beta enrollment.

- Enroll the Apple Account: Sign in with the Apple Account associated with the developer beta channel. Apple’s documented process does not establish that a paid Developer Program membership was required for this specific 2024 seed.
- Choose the iPhone beta: On the paired iPhone, open Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates and select Developer Beta. Apple specified that the iPhone should be running the latest corresponding beta.
- Choose the watch beta: Open the iPhone’s Watch app and go to My Watch > General > Software Update > Beta Updates. Select the developer beta and follow the prompts.
- Prepare the devices: Apple specified at least 50% charge on the watch, an iPhone connected to Wi-Fi, and the watch on its charger and near the paired iPhone during installation.
Apple’s beta installation guidance covers prerequisites, backups, Developer Mode for locally installed apps, and recovery limitations. Xcode 16 was relevant for building and testing against the SDK; Apple’s normal watch installation instructions did not require Xcode as the sole way to put the operating-system beta on the watch.

Beta 4 was most useful to developers and QA teams with a dedicated compatible watch-and-iPhone pair, particularly teams validating apps that used watchOS 11 APIs or relied on health, fitness, notifications, complications, background behavior, or watch-to-phone communication.

It was a poor fit for a primary watch needed for dependable daily tracking, work, travel, or safety. Prerelease software can have bugs, pairing or data problems, and changes that affect app behavior. A later beta can be more mature than an earlier seed without becoming a stable release. Back up devices and read Apple’s release notes before testing; enabling Developer Mode may also be necessary to install locally built apps.
Recovery deserves special consideration: Apple Watch rollback is more restrictive than recovery for an iPhone or Mac. Some watchOS recovery situations may require Apple service, and Apple notes that Apple retail stores and Authorized Service Providers cannot perform certain restoration procedures. Do not install on a watch you cannot afford to have out of service. See Apple’s beta support guidance for its recovery advice.

Compatibility and what the announcement did not establish
Installing required a compatible Apple Watch and paired iPhone, with the iPhone on the corresponding beta track for the documented update flow. The available release information here does not establish the full supported-watch model list, so a specific model should not be assumed compatible based on the beta announcement alone.
The July 23 seed was part of a broader Apple developer-beta rollout that also included beta 4 versions of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, tvOS 18, and visionOS 2, according to contemporary reporting. It was not the final public release, and the reported Activity and Fitness behavior should be distinguished from a promise about final software. Apple’s current release-note index shows that later watchOS releases have superseded this beta.

Common installation problems
- Developer Beta is missing: Check that the iPhone is signed in with the Apple Account associated with the developer beta channel and that the device’s software supports the beta settings workflow.
- The watch update is not offered: Confirm the paired iPhone is on the matching beta track and that the watch is compatible.
- Installation will not begin: Check the watch’s charge level, charger connection, Wi-Fi on the iPhone, storage, and proximity between the devices.
- A locally built app will not install or launch: Build and test with the relevant Xcode 16/watchOS 11 SDK and check whether Developer Mode is required.
- Pairing or notifications fail: Ensure both devices are on matching software generations; restarting the iPhone and watch is a reasonable first troubleshooting step before retrying.
- The watch shows a red information icon or enters recovery: Follow Apple’s restart and service guidance. Do not attempt an unsupported restoration procedure.
