Apple released the fourth developer betas of watchOS 11.1, tvOS 18.1, and visionOS 2.1 on October 7, 2024, in the United States. The builds continued testing for Apple’s fall software updates, but no major new feature set was confirmed for these three platforms. They were aimed primarily at developers and testers, not people looking for a stable update for everyday devices.
What Apple released
The releases were watchOS 11.1 developer beta 4, tvOS 18.1 developer beta 4, and visionOS 2.1 developer beta 4. They arrived as part of a wider testing round that also included newer betas of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1. Contemporary reports date the releases to October 7 in the U.S.; some international coverage displayed October 8 because of time zones. (The Mac Observer; iDrop News)
The beta numbers differed across Apple’s operating systems because their testing cycles did not all begin at the same time. A lower number on one platform does not, by itself, indicate that it is less mature than another.

There was no confirmed headline feature for watchOS 11.1, tvOS 18.1, or visionOS 2.1 in this release. Contemporary coverage raised several possibilities—including sleep apnea detection returning to watchOS testing, robot-vacuum support and other Home or screen-saver additions on tvOS, and an ultrawide Mac Virtual Display mode in visionOS—but those reports did not establish that Beta 4 introduced them. Treat them as expectations, not a changelog. (The Mac Observer)

What each platform’s eventual release notes document
Apple’s notes for the eventual 11.1, 18.1, and 2.1 SDKs provide useful context about developer-facing fixes in each release family. They are not a line-by-line changelog for Beta 4, and they do not prove that every listed correction was already present in that build.

watchOS 11.1
Apple’s watchOS 11.1 release notes document fixes involving StoreKit Testing subscription offer identifiers, SwiftUI crashes with certain if #available and builder combinations, and incorrect font metrics or fonts in rectangular complications and Watch-specific Live Activity views. These are meaningful to app developers, but they do not amount to a broad user-facing redesign.
Sleep apnea detection was a point of interest during the cycle, but it should not be treated as a confirmed Beta 4 addition. Availability of health features can depend on supported Apple Watch hardware, regulatory approval, and country or region.

tvOS 18.1
The tvOS 18.1 notes list screen-saver availability and switcher display problems involving Portraits and Memories & Slideshows, along with StoreKit Testing and SwiftUI fixes. The notes are stronger evidence for a refinement-and-fixes release than for claims that Beta 4 added robot-vacuum compatibility or projector support.
visionOS 2.1
Apple’s visionOS 2.1 notes include a NavigationSplitView column-width correction affecting visionOS, iOS, and tvOS, as well as other framework and SDK fixes. The anticipated ultrawide Mac Virtual Display mode was not confirmed as a Beta 4 feature by the available reporting.

For developers building against these releases, Apple’s notes identify the watchOS 11.1, tvOS 18.1, and visionOS 2.1 SDKs as bundled with Xcode 16.1. Apple also documented App Store Connect and TestFlight workflows for prerelease SDKs during this software cycle. (App Store Connect release notes)

These builds make the most sense for developers who need to test app compatibility, or experienced beta testers with dedicated, compatible hardware. Beta software can be unstable, disrupt app or accessory compatibility, and risk data. Keep backups and avoid installing it on a device you rely on for health, communication, home control, or daily work. A primary Apple Watch deserves particular caution: returning it to an earlier watchOS version is more restrictive than downgrading several other Apple platforms and may require Apple service.
- Consider installing if you are testing an app, have a secondary device, and can tolerate bugs or downtime.
- Wait for a stable release if this is your everyday device, you need dependable third-party apps, or you are mainly hoping for one of the unconfirmed features.
How to access the beta
Developer-beta availability depends on the appropriate Apple developer testing access and compatible hardware. On supported devices in this period, the general route was Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates, then selecting the developer beta channel if it was available. For Apple Watch, the paired iPhone and Watch must meet the relevant compatibility and beta-channel requirements. Public-beta access is a separate program; do not assume a developer build was also available as a public beta.
Apple’s release-note pages are the best reference for SDK details and documented issues: watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS.
