Apple released the third developer betas of visionOS 2.3, watchOS 11.3, and tvOS 18.3 on January 14, 2025. These were testing versions—not public updates for all users—and early coverage found few visible changes. Code in the tvOS beta pointed to planned HomeKit robot-vacuum support, while also surfacing a notice about digital movie and TV-show purchases.
What Beta 3 did—and did not—bring
The third betas were part of Apple’s wider 18.3 software-testing cycle, which also included iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia 15.3. Apple framed the cycle as a chance for developers to test their apps, including with Xcode 16.2. Apple’s developer announcement describes that testing context.
For visionOS, watchOS, and tvOS, the practical headline was modest: contemporaneous reporting identified no major new user-facing features in Beta 3. That does not mean the releases did nothing. Betas can include bug fixes, reliability or performance work, security changes, and internal framework updates without adding a visible feature. Nor does code that anticipates a future capability mean that capability is complete or usable in the current beta.
tvOS 18.3 beta 3: robot-vacuum references and a purchase notice
The most discussed clues appeared in tvOS. Code references suggested Apple was preparing to recognize robot vacuums as a HomeKit device category. If delivered across Apple’s platforms, this could let compatible vacuums appear in the Home app and be controlled alongside other smart-home accessories. The report was evidence of work in progress, not confirmation that every vacuum could be controlled in Beta 3. The contemporaneous Beta 3 report describes the code findings.

Compatibility would depend on more than installing tvOS: the vacuum, its manufacturer firmware, the relevant Home or Matter support, and any required home hub would all matter. A device’s Matter support alone would not guarantee that every function—such as maps, room selection, cleaning modes, schedules, or consumable status—would appear in Apple’s Home app. Those capabilities may remain in the manufacturer’s app.
The beta also contained references to a notice concerning digital movie and TV-show sales. That points to a disclosure about purchasing digital content, not a new buying feature, redesigned Apple TV Store, or change to subscription pricing. The beta report does not establish why the notice was being prepared or where it would appear.

watchOS 11.3 beta 3: a developer test, not a new Watch feature announcement
Apple Watch owners should not expect a headline feature based on the Beta 3 reporting. The watchOS release was part of the same relatively quiet test cycle, with no notable new addition reported. Robot-vacuum support could eventually have a Home app or smart-home implication on Apple Watch, but the code references do not establish that the feature was active or complete in this beta.

visionOS 2.3 beta 3: testing for Apple Vision Pro
visionOS 2.3 beta 3 was for Apple Vision Pro and likewise had no major user-facing feature identified in the available contemporaneous coverage. The potential HomeKit vacuum capability was an indication of planned cross-platform smart-home work, not proof that Vision Pro users could already control all compatible cleaners. Accessory certification, firmware, region, account settings, and later software could affect availability.

These were developer betas made available through Apple’s developer testing channel. “Available” did not mean the final public versions had shipped, and ordinary users would not necessarily see the updates through routine software update checks. Developers should confirm eligibility and device compatibility in Apple’s beta channel before installing.

For tvOS, the beta was available through the Apple TV Settings app’s software-update area. The exact historical menu wording is not established by the available reporting, so it is better not to rely on a specific sequence of labels. Installation on watchOS and visionOS similarly depends on an eligible device and Apple’s beta enrollment and update settings; consult Apple’s platform documentation for the applicable release details: watchOS 11.3 release notes, visionOS 2.3 release notes, and tvOS 18.3 release notes.
Should you install Beta 3?
For developers who need to test apps or accessories against the 18.3 cycle, a beta can be useful—but it is not a routine consumer upgrade. Pre-release software may introduce bugs, crashes, battery drain, connection problems, or incompatibilities. Back up eligible devices and avoid installing a beta on hardware you cannot afford to have disrupted. Recovery and downgrade options vary; watchOS deserves particular caution because it is not as straightforward to roll back as many other Apple platforms.
For most owners, waiting for the stable release was the sensible choice. Beta 3’s limited visible changes offered little reason to accept beta risk unless testing itself was the goal.
What happened next
The three platforms’ release candidates followed on January 21, one week after Beta 3, according to contemporary release-candidate coverage. tvOS 18.3 reached the public on January 27, 2025, as reported in coverage of its final release. The January 14 announcement is therefore historical: it marked a developer-testing milestone, not a current download announcement or the final software release.
