Apple reportedly shelved an Apple Watch project with a camera, but that does not mean the company has abandoned camera-based wearable AI. The original May 2025 report gave Apple’s smart glasses a late-2026 target; later reporting has moved the expected unveiling to June 2027, with availability toward the end of that year. Apple has not announced either product or confirmed a launch date.
What Apple reportedly canceled
In a May 22, 2025 report, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said Apple had shelved a project for an Apple Watch with a built-in camera intended to analyze the wearer’s surroundings. It was an internal project, not an announced feature or a watch that Apple had said would go on sale. The report did not establish that Apple ended its broader work on visual AI or camera-equipped wearables. Bloomberg Law’s account of the report also described smart glasses as a separate effort with an original late-2026 target.
Why a camera may make more sense in glasses than on a watch
A watch camera would have a basic aiming problem: the wrist does not naturally point where the wearer is looking. Framing a sign or object could require an awkward gesture, and a watch would need a clear way to preview, confirm, store, and share what it sees. Battery, heat, and processing limits are also tighter in a small wrist-worn device than in a phone. These are practical design trade-offs, not confirmed reasons Apple shelved the project.

Bloomberg has reported Apple work on glasses alongside a pendant and camera-related AirPods as part of a broader Siri and visual-context push. That pattern suggests a change in wearable form factor, but Apple has not stated that this was its rationale for ending the watch-camera project. What the rumored Apple glasses may be
Reports describe everyday eyewear rather than a bulky mixed-reality headset: glasses intended to pair AI assistance and Siri with awareness of the wearer’s surroundings. Bloomberg reported in April 2026 that Apple was exploring multiple frame styles and camera designs. The available descriptions do not establish that the first glasses will have a display or augmented-reality overlays; an audio-and-camera device is a more cautious expectation than a lightweight Vision Pro. That would put the product nearer the category represented by Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses than Apple Vision Pro. Meta already sells camera-equipped smart glasses, while Vision Pro is a larger spatial-computing headset with displays and immersive environments. Apple’s rumored glasses could compete through Siri and integration with its devices, but their software, compatibility, and final capabilities remain unknown. For watch buyers, the distinction is useful: an Apple Watch is a wrist-worn device for health, fitness, notifications, and communication; glasses would be an entirely different kind of wearable.

“Launch” can mean an announcement, a developer preview, preorders, or retail availability. Current reports distinguish a possible June 2027 reveal from availability toward year-end; neither is guaranteed, and Apple has not confirmed either date.

Having a camera does not necessarily mean a product can take ordinary photos or record video. Those are separate capabilities from using visual input to help an assistant interpret the environment. A camera might analyze what is in front of the wearer without offering a conventional capture mode, though the actual data handling and controls would matter to users regardless.

- Visual AI: A camera could provide context for Siri, such as identifying an object or reading a sign.
- Photos: A photo mode would make the glasses more directly comparable with camera-equipped smart glasses already on sale.
- Video: Recording would raise the strongest questions about consent, notice, and where wearing the device is acceptable.
Earlier reporting described camera designs; later coverage said Apple was weighing whether the glasses should support ordinary photo and video recording. It has not been established that Apple removed the cameras, nor that recording will be included. A July 2026 report on the timing and privacy debate and Stuff’s coverage of the recording question describe the uncertainty.
That distinction matters in private homes, workplaces, schools, and medical settings, where even a device that is not recording can make people wonder whether it is. Any shipping camera-based glasses would need legible cues and credible privacy controls to earn social acceptance. The reports do not establish what controls Apple will use.

How this fits Apple’s other reported wearable work
Bloomberg has reported work on glasses, a pendant, and AirPods with camera-related or expanded AI capabilities. A separate report said camera-equipped AirPods had reached advanced testing, but Apple has not announced them. Taken together, these reports suggest Apple may be exploring several ways to bring visual context to Siri rather than relying on a camera in the watch. They do not guarantee that any of those projects will become products.
This is distinct from another glasses effort: Bloomberg reported in January 2025 that Apple canceled work on Mac-connected augmented-reality glasses. That project should not be conflated with the later-reported AI glasses effort. Bloomberg’s report on the canceled Mac-connected project covers the earlier initiative.

What Apple has not confirmed
- The product name, final design, or whether the glasses will include a display.
- Whether a camera will remain in the shipping product, or whether it will take photos or record video.
- Price, battery life, iPhone compatibility, app support, or prescription-lens options.
- An announcement date or retail availability window.
For buyers choosing now, Ray-Ban Meta is the closest established consumer comparison for everyday camera-and-audio smart glasses; Apple Watch remains the more relevant choice for wrist-based health and notifications, while Vision Pro serves immersive spatial computing. Apple has not announced a glasses product page, price, or preorder.
