Apple did test a rigid-plastic case for a future Apple Watch SE, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, but the idea never became the product buyers received. Apple announced the Apple Watch SE 3 on September 9, 2025, and the successor shipped with an aluminum case—not plastic—on September 19. It starts at $249 in the United States.
What the original report actually said
The July 2024 report described an internal Apple experiment, not a product announcement. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple was testing whether the Apple Watch SE’s aluminum outer shell could be replaced with rigid plastic to reduce manufacturing costs. The report did not confirm a final design, launch date, retail price, or specific amount Apple expected to save.
That distinction matters. “Testing” means Apple was evaluating a design or manufacturing direction; it does not mean the product was approved for mass production. Companies routinely investigate materials and configurations that never ship.

The report also concerned the watch’s main enclosure—not necessarily every visible or structural component. It did not establish that the display, Digital Crown, buttons, sensors, back, or internal frame would all be plastic.

Nor was this the first time an Apple Watch SE used a non-ceramic component. The second-generation SE changed its back case from ceramic to nylon composite, while its main enclosure remained aluminum. That existing composite back should not be confused with an all-plastic watch body. 9to5Mac’s summary of the 2024 report covers that distinction.
Why Apple considered plastic
The reported objective was straightforward: reduce production costs. A plastic enclosure can potentially require less expensive raw material and different manufacturing processes than a machined aluminum case. It might also make bold colors easier to use, giving the SE a more playful identity and separating it visually from Apple’s premium watch models.
Those savings could have been used in several ways. Apple might have lowered the entry price, preserved its margin, or redirected part of the savings toward newer components and features. The reporting did not say which outcome Apple intended.

At the time, the Apple Watch SE started at $249 in the U.S., while lower-priced competitors—including Samsung’s $199 entry-level watch—created pressure at the budget end of the smartwatch market. That comparison was market context, not confirmation that Apple planned a $199 plastic Watch SE. There is no verified Apple target price of $199.
Why the plastic design reportedly ran into trouble
Later Bloomberg-attributed coverage said the project encountered both quality and cost challenges and was in serious jeopardy. Reports summarized the problems broadly as difficulties with the design and with making the expected savings worthwhile.
That wording is important because the public reporting does not provide a technical postmortem. There is no documented defect rate or official Apple explanation establishing that cracking, overheating, water-resistance failures, antenna problems, or a particular chemical formulation killed the project.

More generally, changing an enclosure material can create engineering work in areas such as surface finish, scratch and scuff behavior, structural rigidity, sealing, antenna integration, thermal management, tooling, and quality control. These are plausible trade-offs for any plastic enclosure, but they should not be presented as confirmed defects in Apple’s prototype.

What Apple actually released
The successor arrived as the Apple Watch SE 3. Apple announced it on September 9, 2025, with retail availability beginning September 19. Its case is aluminum, and Apple’s U.S. store listing says it uses 100% recycled aluminum.

The SE 3 is available in 40mm and 44mm sizes. Apple lists an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later as the phone requirement. Prices and compatibility can vary by country, carrier, and configuration, so the figures above are specifically from Apple’s U.S. store materials.
The shipped watch focused on upgrading the platform rather than introducing a cheaper case. Apple lists an S10 chip, an Always-On display, sleep score and sleep-apnea notifications, wrist-temperature sensing, retrospective ovulation estimates, fast charging, Double Tap and wrist-flick gestures, and 5G-capable cellular models.
Apple rates battery life at up to 18 hours. Its store specifications list up to 32 hours in Low Power Mode. Those are stated-use estimates, not guarantees of identical real-world endurance for every owner.

No confirmed plastic-related price cut materialized. The SE 3 launched at a $249 U.S. starting price for the 40mm GPS model, the same entry point cited for the previous SE generation in the relevant coverage.
That does not prove Apple’s internal manufacturing costs or margins stayed unchanged. A company can reduce one cost while absorbing higher costs elsewhere, funding new features, or retaining the difference. The confirmed conclusion is narrower: Apple did not launch the SE 3 at a publicly documented lower price because of a plastic case.

- There is no confirmed retail plastic Apple Watch SE. The rumored design appears to have been abandoned, delayed, or changed before production, but Apple has not publicly announced a formal cancellation statement in the cited material.
- The SE 3 is not the rumored plastic model. Apple’s official specifications identify its case as aluminum.
- Do not wait for the SE 3 to become plastic. It already shipped in September 2025, and the currently cited U.S. entry price is $249.
- Check the phone requirement. The SE 3 requires an iPhone 11 or later with iOS 26 or later, which makes it a poor fit for Android users.
- Account for cellular costs. GPS + Cellular models cost more, and cellular service may involve a separate recurring carrier charge.
For someone seeking Apple’s lowest-cost current smartwatch, the aluminum SE 3 is the direct product to evaluate. Buyers who specifically wanted a cheaper, colorful plastic case should not treat the 2024 report as a promise of a future retail model.
The verdict
The original story was credible as a report about Apple testing a rigid-plastic Watch SE. It was never confirmation that Apple would ship one. Subsequent reports said the concept faced design, quality, and cost problems, and the eventual Apple Watch SE 3 confirmed the outcome: an aluminum case, a $249 U.S. starting price, and no publicly documented plastic version.
In short, Apple explored plastic as a cost-reduction strategy, but the experiment appears not to have reached consumers.
