Apple added the 2020 Intel MacBook Air and Apple Watch Series 5 to its vintage-products list on December 31, 2025. That does not immediately disable either device, end software access, or guarantee that repairs are impossible. It does signal a narrower hardware-service window—and, for the Intel MacBook Air, a software-support gap compared with the 2020 M1 model.
Which products were added?
The Mac addition is specifically the MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2020), Apple’s final Intel-powered MacBook Air. Its model identifier is MacBookAir9,1. It is not the 2020 M1 MacBook Air, which is a separate model identified as MacBookAir10,1.

Regional configurations and cellular variants may not have identical repair eligibility. Service depends on the country, configuration, repair type, and parts availability. The update also reportedly included the iPhone 11 Pro, the 128GB iPhone 8 Plus, and the Wi‑Fi + Cellular iPad Air 3. MacRumors reported the additions.

What Apple means by “vintage”
Apple defines a vintage product as one it stopped distributing for sale more than five but fewer than seven years ago. Apple and Authorized Service Providers may still offer service, but repair availability is not guaranteed. Parts, local policy, and the specific repair all matter. Apple’s service-status policy explains the distinction.
That is different from:
- Discontinued: Apple no longer sells the product new.
- Vintage: Some hardware service may remain available, subject to parts and regional rules.
- Obsolete: Apple stopped distributing the product more than seven years ago and generally stops hardware service and parts ordering, subject to legal exceptions and special programs.
Vintage status is a service classification. It does not automatically stop macOS, watch functions, iCloud, the App Store, activation, or basic device operation on the classification date.
Why this is the final Intel MacBook Air
Apple introduced the Intel Retina MacBook Air in March 2020. Later that year, it launched the first MacBook Air with Apple’s M1 chip, ending Intel processors in the Air line. The 2020 Intel model was therefore the last Intel MacBook Air Apple sold, though not necessarily the last Intel Mac Apple sold overall.

The Intel Air came with a 13.3-inch Retina display, 2560×1600 resolution, Touch ID, two Thunderbolt 3 ports, and a 49.9Wh battery. Processor options included a 1.1GHz dual-core Core i3, 1.1GHz quad-core Core i5, and 1.2GHz quad-core Core i7. Memory was available in 8GB or 16GB configurations, and storage ranged from 256GB to 2TB. Apple’s technical specifications provide the complete configuration details.

The bigger issue is software support
Apple’s current model-identification page lists the 2020 Intel MacBook Air as compatible through macOS Sequoia. The same page lists the 2020 M1 MacBook Air as compatible with macOS Tahoe 26. This does not prove that Sequoia is permanently the final macOS release for Intel Air; it means Apple’s compatibility table, as of August 18, 2026, stops the Intel model at Sequoia. Check Apple’s current compatibility list before making an upgrade decision.
That distinction makes the M1 Air the more future-proof used purchase for most people. Intel remains relevant, however, for owners who need Boot Camp, certain legacy drivers or plug-ins, older virtualization workflows, specialized peripherals, or software dependent on x86 behavior.
What Intel MacBook Air owners should do
Keeping it is reasonable if:
- It remains stable and handles your web, office, writing, streaming, and light productivity work.
- You need Boot Camp or an Intel-specific application.
- The battery is healthy and the machine has enough memory and storage.
- You recently paid for a battery or other major repair.
Replacement is more compelling if:
- The battery is degraded or the laptop frequently throttles or shuts down.
- You have the restrictive 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD configuration.
- You need newer macOS features or a longer software-support runway.
- You use demanding development tools, virtual machines, video applications, or heavy browser workloads.
- Apple or an Authorized Service Provider declines a needed repair.
Intel performance and efficiency are less attractive than Apple-silicon alternatives, but the laptop is not worthless. Its strongest remaining value is low-cost ownership and compatibility with Intel-only workflows.

Possibly. Apple or an Authorized Service Provider may be able to diagnose the machine and repair it if compatible parts are available. Apple’s policy also says Mac laptops may qualify for battery-only service for up to 10 years from the date Apple last distributed the product, subject to parts availability and applicable law. That is an eligibility policy, not a promise that every battery repair will be accepted.

Logic-board, display, and other major repairs can be uneconomical when the repair approaches the used value of the laptop. Get a quote before authorizing work. Service periods and consumer protections can also differ by jurisdiction, so do not treat U.S. policy as a worldwide guarantee.

A functioning Series 5 can continue to be used. Owners can still use its supported health, fitness, notification, and timekeeping features with a compatible iPhone, and can replace ordinary accessories such as bands and chargers through normal channels.
The practical risks are different from those of a Mac:
- Battery aging: reduced runtime is likely in older units.
- Repair uncertainty: Apple Watch service may involve replacement-unit procedures, and availability can be more limited than Mac repair.
- Component failure: display, sensors, buttons, or the Digital Crown may be costly or difficult to service.
- Compatibility: pairing and software support can become more restrictive with newer iPhones and operating systems.
Apple Watch Series 5 should not be treated as instantly unusable, but its vintage status makes a major repair harder to justify unless the watch is otherwise in excellent condition or has personal value.

Should you buy one used?
2020 Intel MacBook Air
A used Intel Air is defensible only at a substantial discount and for a specific use case. Prefer a 16GB model with at least 512GB storage, documented battery condition, and a return window. Before buying, verify:
- The exact processor and model identifier
- Activation Lock is disabled
- Battery condition and cycle information
- Touch ID, keyboard, trackpad, webcam, speakers, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, display, and both USB-C ports
- The seller’s return policy and serial-number information
For general-purpose buyers who do not need Intel compatibility, the 2020 M1 MacBook Air is the safer used choice because Apple currently lists it through macOS Tahoe 26 while listing the Intel Air through macOS Sequoia.
Apple Watch Series 5
Buy a Series 5 only as a low-cost stopgap, not as a long-term Apple Watch investment. Confirm battery health and real-world runtime, Activation Lock removal, screen condition, charger inclusion, Digital Crown and side-button operation, intended iPhone compatibility, and cellular compatibility with the intended carrier where applicable. A return window is especially valuable.
Repair, sell, or upgrade?
Use this simple rule:
- Repair when the device is reliable, the quote is modest, and it provides a feature you cannot easily replace.
- Replace when the repair involves several aging components, a logic board, or a display—or when newer hardware provides a materially longer support runway.
- Sell or trade in when you already planned to upgrade and the device remains functional. Apple’s Trade In program offers convenience, although private resale may produce different results.
For an Intel Air, check the exact model and battery condition, obtain a repair assessment if appropriate, then compare the trade-in value with a current or refurbished Apple-silicon Mac. For a Series 5, replacement is usually more sensible when the battery no longer lasts through the day or a major component fails.
The bottom line
“Vintage” is a warning about shrinking repair availability, not an immediate death sentence. The 2020 Intel MacBook Air remains useful for basic work and Intel-specific needs, but its software-support position is already weaker than that of the 2020 M1 Air. It is therefore a poor default used purchase unless heavily discounted.
Apple Watch Series 5 owners can continue using a working watch, but battery age and uncertain repair options make major repairs difficult to justify. Existing owners should keep either device if it still meets their needs; buyers should demand a low price, clean ownership status, and a return option.
