Historical update: Apple released near-final developer and public-beta builds of visionOS 2.6, tvOS 18.6, and watchOS 11.6 on July 21, 2025. The releases were primarily maintenance updates, and the public versions followed on July 29, 2025. These operating-system versions have since been superseded by newer Apple software.
What Apple released
Apple seeded three release candidates (RCs) to registered developers and public beta testers:

What “release candidate” means
An RC is a near-final build that Apple considers suitable for public release if testing does not uncover a significant last-minute problem. It is not automatically guaranteed to be identical to the final public build: Apple can issue a revised RC or change the build before the wider rollout.

For these releases, contemporary reporting described the RCs as the versions expected to ship publicly unless blocking bugs were found. That expectation was met when the public versions arrived on July 29, 2025.
What changed in watchOS 11.6?
No notable new user-facing features were identified in contemporary coverage. The update appeared focused on maintenance work such as bug fixes, stability, performance, compatibility, and security.
That does not prove that watchOS 11.6 contained no technical changes. Apple’s internal fixes, security corrections, and developer-facing changes may not be visible during ordinary use, and a complete list should not be inferred from the absence of a headline feature.

The same assessment applied to visionOS 2.6 and tvOS 18.6: these were final-testing releases for the existing software cycle rather than major feature updates. See the contemporary coverage for the reported feature assessment.
Who could install the RCs?
The builds were available to registered Apple developers and public beta testers with compatible hardware. They were not ordinary stable updates automatically offered to every Apple Watch, Apple TV, or Apple Vision Pro owner.
After enrolling in the relevant Apple beta channel, testers could use their device’s software-update controls. On Apple Watch, that generally meant Settings → General → Software Update or the paired iPhone’s Watch app. Apple TV and Vision Pro likewise used their system software-update settings, although menu labels and beta controls can vary between software generations.

Developers could also use the RCs to validate apps and managed devices against the software Apple expected to release publicly.

Most Apple Watch owners should have waited for the public release. The stable version was only days away, so the practical benefit of installing the RC on a primary watch was limited.
The RC made more sense for developers, enterprise teams, and experienced testers who needed to check compatibility before launch. Even then, a secondary Apple Watch was preferable.

- Health and safety: Bugs could affect workouts, health features, notifications, cellular connectivity, or other functions that some owners rely on every day.
- Battery and connectivity: Pre-release software can introduce battery drain or problems with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or paired-device communication.
- Compatibility: Third-party watch apps may not yet behave correctly with the new build.
- Recovery: Downgrading watchOS is less straightforward than reverting many iPhone or Mac beta installations and may require Apple service in some circumstances.
Keep the paired iPhone current and maintain a recent backup where supported before testing. Do not use a beta Apple Watch as your only device for travel, work, emergency notifications, or other essential needs.

Apple TV testers could encounter problems with streaming apps, HDMI output, audio, AirPlay, or smart-home integrations. A secondary Apple TV is safer than placing a central home-entertainment device on an RC.

Vision Pro developers and enterprise users also had to consider the impact on hand tracking, display behavior, accessories, APIs, and demonstration workflows. A headset used for work or an important presentation should remain on stable software unless testing the RC was necessary.

From beta to public release
The broad timeline was:
- June 2025: the first 18.6 and 2.6 betas began.
- July 14, 2025: the third betas were reported.
- July 21, 2025: Apple seeded the release candidates.
- July 29, 2025: Apple released the public versions.
The preceding beta builds reported for comparison were tvOS 18.6 beta 22M5074b, watchOS 11.6 beta 22U5074b, and visionOS 2.6 beta 22O5773b. The large build-number changes signaled a new testing stage, but they did not by themselves identify specific user-visible fixes.
Why these modest updates mattered
Although the RCs did not introduce an obvious feature headline, they gave developers a final compatibility target before public rollout. That mattered for watch apps, Apple TV software, Vision Pro experiences, managed devices, and demonstrations that needed to work on the upcoming stable release.
They also represented the end of the maintenance track for these platform versions while Apple was testing the next major generation: visionOS 26, tvOS 26, and watchOS 26. Apple’s release archive documents that broader transition.

Current status
This announcement is historical, not current software news. By August 2026, Apple’s developer release index had moved to the newer 26.x cycle, including visionOS 26.6, tvOS 26.6, and watchOS 26.6 release candidates. Readers looking for software to install today should consult Apple’s current software-update and beta documentation rather than treating the 2025 RCs as active releases.
