Apple seeded the watchOS 11.1 release candidate (RC) to developers and public beta testers on October 22, 2024. It was primarily a maintenance update, with Apple highlighting a fix for an issue that could prevent Breathing Disturbances data from being written to HealthKit. Apple released the finished watchOS 11.1 update publicly on October 28, 2024.
Because watchOS 11.1 is now a historical 2024 release, it should not be confused with the current watchOS version. Its RC remains relevant mainly as a snapshot of Apple’s final testing cycle and for developers reviewing the release’s compatibility fixes.
What is a release candidate?
A release candidate is typically the final beta build Apple distributes before a customer release. It is considered close to finished, but it remains pre-release software and can still be replaced or revised if Apple finds a blocking problem. Apple explains its beta software process in its beta installation guidance.
The watchOS 11.1 RC was not a normal stable-channel update for every Apple Watch owner. Availability was limited to users enrolled in Apple’s Developer or Public Beta programs, with eligibility also depending on the Apple ID and paired-iPhone configuration.

When did Apple release watchOS 11.1?
- October 22, 2024: Apple seeded watchOS 11.1 RC to developers and public beta testers.
- October 28, 2024: Apple released watchOS 11.1 to customers.
The RC arrived roughly a week after the fifth beta and formed part of the same general software cycle as iOS 18.1. The final date is documented in Apple’s watchOS 11.1 security content and security-release listings.
What did watchOS 11.1 fix?
Breathing Disturbances data and HealthKit
The most significant documented consumer fix addressed an issue in which Breathing Disturbances data could fail to be written to HealthKit for some users. That matters because HealthKit stores health and fitness information used by Apple’s apps and compatible third-party applications.
The wording is narrower than saying watchOS 11.1 improved sleep-apnea detection. Apple documented a data-recording fix; it did not claim that the update improved diagnostic accuracy or guaranteed more reliable sleep-apnea notifications.

Developer-facing fixes
Apple’s watchOS 11.1 release notes also list fixes that are more important to developers than ordinary watch owners, including:
- StoreKit Testing and offer-code subscription renewal information.
- SwiftUI crashes involving
if #availablein@WidgetBundleBuilderand@SceneBuilder. - WidgetKit font metrics for rectangular complications and watch-specific Live Activity views.
- Incorrect font handling in custom Live Activity views.
These changes could affect apps using subscriptions, complications, widgets, or Live Activities without introducing an obvious new feature in the watch’s interface.
Was watchOS 11.1 a major feature update?
No major new consumer feature set was identified for watchOS 11.1. Apple’s documented notes emphasized fixes and reliability work rather than a new feature milestone.

Which Apple Watch models were compatible?
The final watchOS 11.1 release supported:
- Apple Watch Series 6 and later
- Apple Watch SE (2nd generation)
- Apple Watch Ultra and later Ultra models supported by watchOS 11
Apple’s published compatibility listing should be treated as authoritative for the exact model range. The paired iPhone requirement for watchOS 11 was an iPhone XS or later running iOS 18 or later. A compatible watch did not automatically qualify for the RC: the user also needed the appropriate beta enrollment and software configuration.
How beta testers could install the RC
Once enrolled and eligible, testers could check for the update through the paired iPhone:
- Open the Watch app.
- Tap General.
- Tap Software Update.
- Install the available watchOS 11.1 release candidate.
Apple recommends keeping the watch on its charger during the update. In practice, the watch should have at least 50% charge, remain on the charger, and stay near the paired iPhone, which should be connected to Wi-Fi. Apple’s general Apple Watch update instructions describe the charging and connectivity requirements.

Apple Watch data is backed up to the paired iPhone, but Apple still recommends backing up devices and reviewing the release notes before installing beta software.

Should ordinary users install the RC?
For most people, waiting for the stable release was the better choice. The RC was appropriate for users who were already enrolled in Apple’s beta program, needed to test an app, or were comfortable troubleshooting pre-release software.
Waiting made more sense if the watch was important for medical or safety-related routines, dependable battery life, workouts, notifications, or communication. “Release candidate” means near-final—not guaranteed trouble-free or identical to the eventual customer build.
Reports in the MacRumors discussion mentioned battery drain, syncing behavior, and update confusion. Those are anecdotal user reports, not controlled tests or evidence of a product-wide defect.

If the RC did not appear, the likely causes included delayed availability, incomplete beta enrollment, insufficient charge, the watch not being placed on its charger, or an incompatible iPhone-and-watchOS combination. Beta-update settings and Apple ID enrollment can also determine which update prompt appears.

After installation, health, music, or complication data may take time to resynchronize. If an app stops working, check whether its developer supports the new watchOS build before assuming the watch itself is faulty.
Why the final release still mattered for security
The original RC coverage focused on availability and functional fixes. Apple’s final security documentation added further context, including a fix for an accessibility issue in which an attacker with physical access to a locked device might view sensitive information. Apple described the remedy as improved authentication.
Apple’s complete watchOS 11.1 security page lists the full set of affected components and fixes. It is better to consult that page than to treat one highlighted issue as the complete security summary.

Notes for Apple Watch developers
Apple bundled the watchOS 11.1 SDK with Xcode 16.1. Developers should test both runtime behavior on watchOS 11.1 and compilation or SDK behavior in Xcode 16.1, particularly for apps that use StoreKit subscriptions, SwiftUI builders, WidgetKit complications, or Live Activities.
Apple’s Xcode 16.1 release notes also state that on-device debugging was supported for watchOS 7 and later. A forum report associated with the RC discussion listed build 22R582, but that build number was reported by MacRumors rather than independently exposed in the Apple release-note and security pages.
The bottom line
watchOS 11.1 was a refinement release, not a new-feature milestone. The RC arrived on October 22, 2024, with its most consequential documented consumer change being the HealthKit fix for missing Breathing Disturbances data. Developers also received StoreKit, SwiftUI, WidgetKit, and Live Activity fixes. Apple released the stable update on October 28, 2024, for compatible Apple Watch models.
