Apple released the second betas of watchOS 11.4 and tvOS 18.4 on March 3, 2025, as part of a coordinated round of updates across its platforms. Beta 2 brought no major, clearly documented new feature for Apple Watch or Apple TV users. Its value was mainly in testing and developer changes; the seven new watchOS emojis that became the cycle’s most visible addition were reported with beta 3, not beta 2.

What Apple released on March 3

The March 3 beta 2 round included watchOS 11.4 and tvOS 18.4, alongside iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, macOS 15.4, and visionOS 2.4. It was the second testing pass in a multi-platform cycle that Apple had begun on February 21, when it announced the initial beta family and advised developers to test their apps with Xcode 16.3 (Apple’s beta announcement; March 3 beta 2 coverage).

Contemporary reporting described the watchOS and tvOS updates as light on obvious new features. The available beta 2 report does not establish a complete distinction between developer and public-beta availability, so it is safer not to assume that every tester had access through the same channel. In any case, beta software is a pre-release test build, not a finished update recommended for every device.

watchOS 11.4: the emojis came later

There was no major new Apple Watch feature clearly confirmed in beta 2 reporting. Seven new Unicode emojis were the most visible addition associated with the watchOS 11.4 beta cycle: a face with bags under the eyes, fingerprint, leafless tree, root vegetable, harp, shovel, and splatter. But coverage identified them with beta 3, reported on March 10—not as a confirmed beta 2 change. They should therefore be understood as a later development in the cycle, rather than a reason to install beta 2 (beta 3 coverage).

Apple’s final watchOS 11.4 notes are chiefly useful to developers. They describe the watchOS 11.4 SDK, bundled with Xcode 16.3, and changes involving StoreKit, SwiftUI, the AppStore.Platform API, and libxml2. Among the details: Apple documented StoreKit purchase-related fixes and SwiftUI fixes involving tint handling and environment invalidation; it also documented a StoreKit issue affecting introductory-offer eligibility when no App Store account is signed in. The notes deprecate custom allocation APIs for libxml2 and say watchOS is no longer a standalone option in AppStore.Platform, where it is combined with iOS. These are development and compatibility details, not a list of new Watch app features (Apple’s watchOS 11.4 release notes).

Nothing in this release cycle establishes that Apple Intelligence came to Apple Watch. The emoji addition should not be confused with Apple Intelligence or a broader change to the watch’s capabilities.

tvOS 18.4: speculation versus documented changes

At beta 2, new Apple TV screen savers and robot-vacuum support were possibilities discussed in contemporary coverage, not confirmed features of that build. Earlier references to screen savers had reportedly disappeared during testing, another reason not to treat them as a promised addition. The March 3 report also raised the possibility of Siri improvements, but did not confirm them. Rumor or expectation is not the same as a feature Apple shipped (beta 2 coverage).

Apple’s final tvOS 18.4 documentation instead gives developers the clearest concrete change: Background Assets support for tvOS apps running on tvOS 18.4 or later. The release notes also cover SDK and system-call API availability, and deprecate custom libxml2 allocation APIs. Background Assets can matter to app developers managing assets in the background, but the release note does not make it a new Apple TV screen saver or a visible interface feature for viewers. The tvOS 18.4 SDK was bundled with Xcode 16.3 (Apple’s tvOS 18.4 release notes).

Should you install a beta?

Developers: Testing beta software can help catch app compatibility issues before a public release. Use a dedicated test device where possible, and review Apple’s release notes for the SDK and APIs relevant to your app. Xcode 16.3 was the SDK bundle associated with both final releases.

Enthusiasts: The beta 2 reporting offered little confirmed consumer-facing benefit to offset the usual pre-release risks. Betas can bring instability, battery drain, crashes, connectivity problems, or app incompatibilities. Keep important data backed up where possible and be prepared for a less reliable experience.

Apple Watch owners who rely on their watch: Be especially cautious. Apple Watch recovery and downgrade options can be more constrained than users expect, and the available reporting does not establish a universal downgrade path for every model. Check the requirements and recovery implications for your specific device before installing any beta.

Apple TV owners: If you depend on the device for everyday viewing, waiting for a final release is the lower-risk choice. Neither the screen-saver discussion nor the robot-vacuum possibility was a confirmed beta 2 feature.

Beta software can also change between builds: a feature discussed during an early test may be delayed, removed, or appear only in a later beta. Apple’s release notes focus on developer information and do not necessarily provide a complete consumer-facing changelog, so the absence of a headline feature report does not mean that a beta contains no fixes or under-the-hood changes.

What happened after beta 2

Beta 2 was a step in a testing cycle, not the final software. Beta 3 coverage on March 10 reported the seven watchOS emojis. Apple released tvOS 18.4 on March 31, 2025 (build 22L255), followed by watchOS 11.4 on April 1, 2025 (build 22T251). Apple’s release listing also records tvOS 18.4.1 on April 16, 2025 (build 22L261); the cited listing does not show a corresponding watchOS 11.4.1 entry (Apple’s release listing). These are historical releases, not current-version guidance; consult Apple’s release index for later platform updates.

For most Apple Watch and Apple TV owners, beta 2 was not a compelling feature upgrade. Its significance was as a routine testing milestone in Apple’s broader software cycle. Developers had concrete reasons to test the new SDKs, while the most visible watchOS addition arrived later and the headline tvOS possibilities remained unconfirmed in beta 2.
