Apple’s 2026 Earth Day and International Dance Day Activity Challenges were genuine, but they have already ended. The Earth Day challenge ran on April 22, 2026, requiring any workout lasting at least 30 minutes. The International Dance Day challenge ran on April 29, 2026, requiring a Dance workout lasting at least 20 minutes.
Because it is now August 18, 2026, “this month” is no longer an accurate description. This is a recap of the April 2026 challenges, not a current opportunity to earn them.
What were the Apple Watch challenges?
Apple’s Activity Challenges are limited-time events connected to calendar occasions. Similar Earth Day and International Dance Day challenges have appeared repeatedly in previous years, although Apple’s past pattern does not guarantee that either challenge will return every year.
Specialist Apple reports confirmed the 2026 events and their requirements, including coverage from MacRumors and 9to5Mac.

Earth Day challenge: April 22, 2026
- Date: Wednesday, April 22, 2026
- Requirement: Record any workout lasting at least 30 minutes
- Recording method: Apple’s Workout app or a compatible third-party app that writes workout data to Apple Health
The requirement was broad. It was not limited to walking, running, outdoor exercise, or an environmentally themed activity. The important conditions were recording a qualifying workout and reaching the 30-minute minimum on the specified date.
International Dance Day challenge: April 29, 2026
- Date: Wednesday, April 29, 2026
- Requirement: Record a Dance workout lasting at least 20 minutes
- Recording method: Apple’s Workout app or a compatible third-party app that adds the workout to Apple Health
This challenge was narrower than the Earth Day event. A generic workout should not be assumed to qualify. The session needed to be recorded as the Dance workout type, or logged by a compatible app in a way Apple recognized as a Dance workout.
Apple Fitness+ was one possible source of a guided dance session, but a Fitness+ subscription was not presented as mandatory. A self-directed dance workout recorded with the appropriate workout type could also satisfy the stated requirement.

How participants could record a qualifying workout
- Make sure the Apple Watch is paired with the iPhone and that the chosen workout app has permission to write workout data to Health.
- Open the Workout app on the watch.
- For Earth Day, select the workout type that best describes the exercise. For Dance Day, specifically select Dance.
- Start the workout before exercising and continue beyond the minimum threshold. Ending slightly after 30 minutes or 20 minutes provides a margin if the watch pauses or rounds the recorded duration.
- End the workout only after the required duration has been recorded.
- Allow the workout to sync, then check the Fitness app for the award.
Exact menu labels and eligibility requirements can vary with the installed iOS and watchOS versions. The available reporting does not establish a minimum Apple Watch model, minimum software version, or universal regional availability.
Third-party apps, pauses, and manual entries
The reported rules allowed compatible third-party apps when they recorded workouts to Apple Health. That does not mean every fitness app, imported activity, or manual Health entry would necessarily trigger the award.
There is an important distinction between an app that records a live workout and writes a proper workout record to Health, an activity imported later, and an entry that merely contributes exercise data or closes an Activity ring. The supplied reporting confirms the first category but does not establish that all late imports or manual additions qualify.

What was the reward?
Completing either event awarded a digital award or badge in the Fitness app, along with animated stickers associated with the challenge. These were software rewards—not a physical medal, product discount, cash prize, or Apple Watch hardware benefit.
The award might not appear instantly if the workout has not synchronized. A short delay can be resolved by keeping the watch and iPhone connected, opening Fitness after synchronization, and checking the relevant awards area. However, the available coverage does not provide a guaranteed recovery process for a missing award.

What if the workout was missed or recorded incorrectly?
Treat April 22 and April 29 as the required calendar dates. The available reports do not document an official Apple policy for late submissions, retroactive edits, missed challenges, or timezone changes, so it would be inaccurate to promise that a missed event can be recovered.
- Challenge not visible: A missing notification does not necessarily prove that the event was unavailable. Prior coverage says notifications could arrive before a challenge, but notification delivery was not itself the eligibility rule.
- Workout did not count: Check whether it was saved as a Health workout and whether it reached the required duration.
- Wrong workout type: This is especially significant for Dance Day. A generic or “Other” workout may not be recognized as Dance.
- Workout ended below the threshold: The stated minimums were 30 minutes for Earth Day and 20 minutes for Dance Day.
- Workout crossed midnight: Eligibility for a session spanning two dates was not clarified. The safest interpretation was to complete and record it entirely on the specified date.
- Travel or timezone change: Apple’s handling of international timezones was not specified in the available reports, so eligibility should not be guaranteed for workouts recorded while crossing timezones.
Are these guaranteed to return?
No. Apple offered similar Earth Day and International Dance Day challenges in multiple prior years, including 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024, and again in 2026. That supports describing them as recurring or frequently offered, but it is not a permanent public calendar or a guarantee of future dates.
For historical context, the original wording closely resembles a April 2024 9to5Mac report, when the equivalent dates fell on April 22 and April 29, 2024.

Do you need to buy an Apple Watch or Fitness+?
Not for the purpose of these completed 2026 challenges. Existing Apple Watch owners needed a way to record a qualifying workout, and the reported requirements did not make a new watch purchase or Fitness+ subscription necessary.
Readers who do not own an Apple Watch can review Apple’s official Apple Watch range, but buying a watch solely for two digital annual-style badges would be difficult to justify. Fitness+ may be useful for guided dance and other workouts; it is optional rather than a stated requirement. See Apple’s official Fitness+ page for the current service details.
Bottom line for Apple Watch owners
The 2026 events were real: record any 30-minute workout on April 22 for Earth Day, and record a 20-minute Dance workout on April 29 for International Dance Day. Each offered a Fitness badge and animated stickers. Since both dates have passed, readers should treat this page as an April 2026 recap and wait for Apple’s next official Activity Challenge announcement rather than relying on an old notification or headline.
