Yes—the pre-WWDC 2025 report was broadly right. Apple extended its new cross-platform interface to Apple Watch and Apple TV, but the final software was not called watchOS 12, tvOS 19, or iOS 19. At its June 9, 2025 keynote, Apple introduced watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and iOS 26, all built around a new design language called Liquid Glass.
The important distinction is that Apple confirmed a shared visual system—not identical interfaces or equally extensive redesigns on every device.
What the original report predicted
In May 2025, reporting attributed to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said Apple’s expected iOS 19 redesign would extend beyond the iPhone to watchOS and tvOS. The reported direction was influenced in part by visionOS, with more translucency, depth, and glass-like visual elements.

Contemporary coverage also suggested that watchOS might receive only some of the broader redesign rather than becoming a miniature version of iOS. That qualification remains important: “the platforms share a design language” does not mean “every screen was rebuilt in the same way.”

Apple confirmed the redesign at WWDC 2025
Apple confirmed the central prediction at its WWDC keynote on June 9, 2025. The company announced Liquid Glass, a system-wide design language extending across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS.

Apple describes Liquid Glass as a dynamic material that uses translucency, depth, movement, real-time rendering, and specular highlights. It is designed to respond to surrounding content and adapt to different screen sizes and environments. Apple says the approach draws on earlier interface ideas including macOS Aqua, iOS 7’s blur effects, the iPhone X era, Dynamic Island, and visionOS.

That makes “visionOS on every device” an inaccurate description. Liquid Glass was influenced partly by visionOS, but Apple presented it as a broader system adapted to each platform’s hardware, display, and input method. The company’s developer presentation explains the design language in more detail.
Why iOS 19 became iOS 26
The biggest correction to the original rumor is the version number. Apple changed its naming convention at WWDC 2025, moving from platform-specific sequential numbers to year-based numbering.

The number refers to the software’s associated release year rather than the historical sequence for a particular operating system. Therefore, “iOS 19 redesign” is accurate only when discussing the original pre-keynote expectation. It is not the name of the final 2025 release.
What Liquid Glass means for watchOS
Apple confirmed that Liquid Glass appears in watchOS controls. Content can show through the new material, while controls, navigation elements, and system components use updated shapes, sizing, contrast behavior, and visual hierarchy.

On a watch, however, the practical effect is constrained by the small display. Translucency and layered controls can make an interface feel lighter and more consistent with Apple’s other products, but they can also make text or controls harder to distinguish over busy content. The design’s success depends less on whether it looks like an iPhone and more on whether key information remains immediately readable at a glance.
The strongest defensible description is therefore an adapted redesign, not a wholesale copy of iOS. The original reports did not provide enough detail to say that every watchOS screen or system app changed to the same degree.

- How the interface behaves in dark mode and high-contrast configurations.
- Whether motion, layering, or visual effects are comfortable for users sensitive to animation.
- Whether navigation is faster to understand, rather than merely more visually consistent.
Liquid Glass was only one part of the watchOS announcement. It should not be confused with separate watchOS features or treated as proof of a matching feature set across iPhone and Apple Watch.

What Liquid Glass means for tvOS
tvOS was a particularly notable target because its overall visual language had changed less dramatically than some other Apple platforms since the Apple TV operating system’s introduction. Apple confirmed that the new design extends to tvOS, including its menus, controls, navigation, and other system elements.
Television software has a different usability problem from phone software. A viewer may be several feet away, using a remote rather than touch, and trying to identify a selected item quickly. Translucent panels and layered controls can create clearer visual depth, but they can also reduce readability when placed over detailed artwork or video.
That is why “tvOS matches iOS” is the wrong expectation. The two systems can use the same materials and visual principles while retaining different layouts, focus behavior, navigation patterns, and content presentation. A design that works on a phone cannot simply be enlarged and controlled with a remote.
The practical questions for tvOS users are whether profile selection, playback controls, navigation, and content discovery remain easy to read from a distance—and whether appearance and accessibility options provide sufficient control when transparency or contrast becomes distracting.

More than a cosmetic refresh
Liquid Glass is primarily a visual and interaction-system change, but Apple’s developer material describes a wider update than a new color palette. The changes include:
- New visual materials and appearance variants.
- Updated navigation controls and system components.
- Changes to control sizing and shapes.
- Different contrast behavior and color treatment.
- Scrolling and edge effects.
- Information-architecture changes intended to create a more coherent experience across platforms.
Apple’s design-system overview emphasizes consistency without making every Apple product identical. The same principle matters to users: a familiar visual language may reduce friction when moving between devices, but platform-specific usability still determines whether the redesign is genuinely useful.
What it means for developers
Apple said many apps could initially adopt the new appearance by recompiling, but that does not mean developers can ignore the redesign. Existing apps still need to be reviewed for contrast, custom controls, layout assumptions, navigation, and content behind translucent materials.

Developers may need to adopt updated APIs and refine their interfaces so custom elements work naturally alongside the new system components. Apple’s platform implementation session discusses the distinction between receiving the updated appearance and properly adapting an app to it.
This is especially important across watchOS and tvOS. A custom control that is acceptable on a large monitor may be too dense on a watch, while an interface designed for touch may not communicate focus clearly when operated with an Apple TV remote.

The bottom line on the 2025 report
The report was a correctly sourced prediction that became confirmed news, with one major correction: Apple did not release iOS 19, watchOS 12, or tvOS 19. It announced iOS 26, watchOS 26, and tvOS 26.
Apple Watch and Apple TV did receive the new Liquid Glass design language, but the result should be understood as a coordinated redesign adapted to each platform—not as the same interface copied across every Apple device. For users, the meaningful test is whether translucency, depth, and updated navigation improve clarity as well as visual consistency.
