Strava and Komoot now support offline route use on Apple Watch, allowing prepared routes and activity recording without an iPhone nearby, cellular service, or an internet connection during the outing. They are not equivalent: Strava’s offline saved-Route feature requires a subscription and is comparatively basic, while Komoot supports offline turn-by-turn navigation when the relevant map region is unlocked, without requiring Premium.

Both apps still require preparation while connected. The watch needs downloaded route or map data, sufficient battery, and a GPS signal. Offline mode also does not guarantee rerouting, live location sharing, current trail conditions, weather, or emergency navigation.

The short version

  • Choose Komoot if turn-by-turn directions and outdoor map detail are your priority.
  • Choose Strava if your routes, training history, community recommendations, and social activity already live in Strava.
  • Neither app replaces preparation: select and download the route before leaving connectivity, then test it with the iPhone disconnected.
  • GPS is still required. Offline means no active internet connection is needed; it does not mean the watch can navigate without positioning data.

The two Apple Watch upgrades were announced in January 2026. Komoot announced its new Apple Watch app on January 26, while coverage of both apps followed on January 27 and 28. Komoot’s announcement describes offline routes, turn-by-turn navigation, maps, and activity recording. 9to5Mac’s coverage confirms the broader Apple Watch rollout.

Strava versus Komoot

Feature Strava Komoot
Offline route use Yes, for saved Routes and subscribers Yes, with an unlocked map region
Apple Watch recording Yes Yes
Offline turn-by-turn navigation Not established by launch coverage; do not assume it Yes
Internet required during activity No, after preparation No, after preparation
Core payment model Subscription Unlocked map regions; Premium is optional for core offline navigation
Route ecosystem Community Routes, activity history, and activity-based recommendations Outdoor route planning, trail maps, and navigation
Best fit Existing Strava subscribers and socially motivated athletes Hikers, cyclists, and runners who need navigation

Based on the launch feature sets, Komoot is the stronger navigation-first option. Strava is the more natural choice for someone already invested in its training and social ecosystem who mainly wants to follow a saved route and record the activity.

What Strava adds to Apple Watch

Strava can display maps directly on Apple Watch during runs, rides, and hikes. Subscribers can follow saved Strava Routes while offline, and Strava’s route suggestions draw on activity data from its platform. The company’s subscription page lists offline maps and saving Routes for offline use among subscriber features.

The important limitation is navigation depth. Launch coverage described Strava’s implementation as a basic offline route experience rather than the full turn-by-turn system offered by Komoot. A route line on the watch can help you stay oriented, but it should not automatically be treated as spoken or visual directions at every junction.

Strava therefore makes the most sense when:

  • you already pay for Strava;
  • your routes originate in Strava;
  • you value community recommendations, clubs, and activity history;
  • you primarily need saved-route viewing and workout recording; and
  • you are comfortable with a subscription requirement.

The U.S. subscription page showed an individual price of $79.99 per year, displayed as $6.67 per month when billed annually, plus tax, with a 30-day trial shown on August 18, 2026. The Verge also reported a $11.99 monthly option. Prices can vary by country, platform, promotion, tax, and account, so check the current checkout page before subscribing.

What Komoot adds to Apple Watch

Komoot’s Apple Watch app is designed more explicitly around outdoor navigation. It supports offline route use, activity recording, turn-by-turn directions, and detailed sport-specific maps. The watch map can be zoomed and panned, with trails, paths, and streets visible for orientation.

Komoot says the core offline navigation capability does not require Premium when the relevant map region is unlocked. The first region is free, while additional regions, bundles, or the World Pack may require payment. Its App Store listing also describes offline maps, voice navigation, route syncing, and Apple Watch directions, distance, and speed information.

Komoot also integrates with Apple Health and supports Apple Watch Water Lock. Premium can add features such as worldwide maps, multi-day route planning, live tracking, weather on route, sport-specific maps, 3D maps, and Garmin map support, but Premium should not be confused with the basic requirement for offline navigation.

One qualification matters: Komoot’s launch announcement listed automatic rerouting, real-time location sharing, offline activity queuing, and other improvements as planned enhancements. Do not assume every one of those features is available in every current version or while fully offline. Check the app’s current documentation and version behavior before relying on them.

What “offline” actually means

Offline generally means

  • The watch does not need an active internet connection during the activity.
  • The iPhone can remain at home or disconnected.
  • Previously prepared route and map data can be shown on the watch.
  • The watch can use GPS to determine position.
  • Activity data can be recorded locally and synchronized later when connectivity returns.

Offline does not necessarily mean

  • You can create and download a new route on the trail.
  • The app can calculate a completely new route without online data.
  • Automatic rerouting will work.
  • Live location sharing will continue.
  • Weather, closures, traffic, map changes, or community information will be current.
  • Every surrounding map region or map layer is included.
  • The battery will last for an entire long-distance outing.

A saved route and a complete offline map are not always the same thing. A route may be only a line to follow, while navigation may also require map tiles around that line, turn prompts, voice directions, terrain information, or data for rerouting. Do not assume that saving a route automatically downloads every layer or the entire surrounding area unless the app explicitly confirms it.

Komoot states that the watch requires a GPS signal for directions, tour recording, and real-time speed. GPS can be slower or less precise near tall buildings, dense forest, steep-sided canyons, or after an indoor start. Wait for a stable position before moving.

Apple Watch and software requirements

The current App Store listings specify:

  • Strava: iOS 17.0 or later and watchOS 10.0 or later.
  • Komoot: iOS 16.4 or later and watchOS 10.0 or later.

Launch coverage indicates that the features are available across standard Apple Watch models as well as Ultra models, rather than being restricted to the Ultra line. That does not mean identical performance. Battery capacity, display behavior, GPS hardware, storage, temperature tolerance, and cellular configuration vary between watches. Check the current Strava App Store listing and Komoot App Store listing for compatibility with your specific watch and software versions.

A cellular Apple Watch is not mandatory for a properly prepared offline route. Conversely, cellular capability does not guarantee service in remote areas, so it is not a substitute for downloading the route and maps.

  1. Update both devices and apps. Install the current iPhone and Apple Watch software and update Strava or Komoot.
  2. Confirm compatibility. Check the current watchOS and iOS requirements and ensure the watch has available storage.
  3. Sign in to the correct account. Make sure the account containing the route is the one connected to the watch app.
  4. Prepare the route while connected. Select or create the route in Strava or Komoot on the iPhone or web service.
  5. Download the required data. Save the route and download the relevant map region or offline data while Wi-Fi or cellular internet is available.
  6. Wait for synchronization. Open the route on the watch and confirm that it is visible or marked as available offline.
  7. Charge the watch. GPS, map rendering, screen wake events, continuous recording, and cellular radios can consume significant battery.
  8. Run an offline test. Disable the iPhone connection or leave the phone behind briefly and confirm that the route opens and the activity can start.
  9. Acquire GPS outdoors. Start where the watch has a clear view of the sky and wait for a position fix.

For a remote or safety-critical trip, carry a backup navigation method. A physical map and compass are useful because downloaded digital data can be incomplete or stale, and an Apple Watch can run out of power.

What to expect during the activity

  • Start navigation from the watch and verify that the route or map appears.
  • Start recording and confirm that the activity is being stored locally.
  • Keep the route available on the watch rather than assuming it can be downloaded later.
  • Do not rely on live sharing, new weather data, current closures, or online rerouting unless connectivity and the relevant app feature are available.
  • Monitor battery throughout a long activity, especially with frequent map viewing, high screen brightness, cellular enabled, cold temperatures, or an always-on display.
  • Expect synchronization of the completed activity to wait until the watch or iPhone reconnects.

If offline navigation fails

Reconnect the watch to the iPhone and repeat the preparation process. Then check the following:

  • the route was saved to the correct account;
  • the relevant map region is unlocked in Komoot;
  • the download or synchronization finished successfully;
  • the watch has enough storage;
  • location permission is enabled;
  • the watch has acquired GPS outdoors; and
  • the apps and watch have been restarted if necessary.

Try a shorter route before attempting a long outing. Starting indoors, under dense cover, or with an incomplete download can make a feature appear broken when the underlying problem is preparation or GPS acquisition.

Which app should you use?

Choose Strava when your ecosystem is already there

Strava is a sensible choice if you already subscribe, keep your training history there, discover routes through its community, or want one service for recording and social sharing. Its offline Apple Watch feature is useful for following saved Routes without carrying the iPhone, but its launch implementation is less complete as a navigation tool and requires a subscription.

Choose Komoot when navigation is the main job

Komoot is the better fit for hiking, bikepacking, mountain biking, trail running, and complex routes where turn-by-turn directions and outdoor map detail matter. The trade-off is its map-region model: the relevant region must be unlocked, and readers who travel widely may need multiple regions, a bundle, the World Pack, or Premium.

Komoot’s U.S. App Store listing showed World Pack at $29.99 and Premium listings at $59.99 on August 18, 2026, alongside other regional and promotional prices. Treat those as location- and account-dependent signals, not universal prices.

Use neither as your only safety system when

  • the route is remote wilderness;
  • battery failure would create serious risk;
  • the route requires frequent dynamic rerouting;
  • you need current closures, weather, traffic, or live tracking; or
  • you have not tested the exact watch and app combination offline.

Alternatives worth considering

WorkOutDoors may suit Apple Watch users who want highly configurable workout screens and map views. Footpath is aimed more at visual route drawing and planning. Apple’s built-in Workout and Maps apps remain suitable for basic activity recording and general navigation, though they are not necessarily substitutes for specialist trail planning.

If long battery life, rugged outdoor hardware, and mature offline navigation matter more than Apple’s broader smartwatch ecosystem, Garmin is worth considering. The new Strava and Komoot features narrow the gap for Apple Watch users, but they do not eliminate the advantages of dedicated outdoor devices.

Bottom line

Strava and Komoot make an Apple Watch considerably more useful away from the iPhone and cellular coverage, but the choice is not simply “which app has offline maps?” Strava offers subscriber-only saved-Route following with a more basic navigation experience. Komoot offers the stronger offline navigation package, including turn-by-turn directions, when the required map region is unlocked. Prepare and test the route while connected, confirm GPS and battery, and carry a backup for serious backcountry travel.
