An Apple Watch can record an Outdoor Cycle workout’s timer while failing to show distance, speed, route, heart rate, or other metrics. Those failures have different causes: first check that the workout is running and set to Outdoor Cycle, then separate GPS and location problems from heart-rate, Bluetooth-sensor, or saved-workout issues. Some Apple Watch owners have reported cycling-specific tracking problems, but user reports do not establish a confirmed widespread bug.

Identify which part of the workout is missing

Outdoor Cycle can show speed, average speed, elevation gained, distance, calories, heart rate, and activity information; power or cadence readings may depend on compatible connected hardware. Check the workout summary and route map separately: one can be present while another metric is missing. Apple lists Outdoor Cycle’s workout views in its Apple Watch workout guide.

What you see What it points toward
No workout record in Fitness The workout may not have been started, may have been discarded, or may not have saved.
Timer runs, but distance and route are missing Check workout state, GPS conditions, location permissions, and possible software or device issues.
Route exists, but distance or speed is zero or wrong The location trace and the displayed summary may not agree; this can indicate a calculation or processing problem.
Distance is present, but heart rate is absent Check fit, skin contact, wrist detection, and heart-rate settings.
Distance works, but cadence or power is absent Check compatible Bluetooth cycling sensors and their pairing.
Another app records correctly, but Apple Workout does not The issue may be specific to Apple Workout or Fitness rather than the watch’s overall ability to record.
Apple Workout records correctly, but another app does not Check that app’s location and Health access, along with its recording settings.

Exercise minutes can also differ from elapsed workout time: a paused session or effort that does not meet Apple’s exercise-intensity criteria may not add the expected minutes. Missing heart rate does not, by itself, explain a missing GPS route.

Check the workout type and pause state first

Choose Outdoor Cycle

On Apple Watch, open Workout, turn the Digital Crown to Outdoor Cycle, and tap Start. Use Indoor Cycle on a stationary bike. Indoor Cycle is not expected to create a GPS route from location data; Apple distinguishes outdoor cycling location data from indoor cycling in its HealthKit workout-session documentation.

Look for a pause before changing settings

Check the workout display for a paused state. A workout can be manually paused by pressing the side button and Digital Crown together. Outdoor cycling can also auto-pause. On Apple Watch, go to Settings → Workout → Auto-Pause to check that setting. Frequent stops or slow movement can make the recorded active time or distance look unexpectedly low if auto-pause is involved. Apple documents these controls in its workout settings guide.

Restore GPS and location access

Check location settings on the iPhone

  1. On the paired iPhone, open Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services and make sure Location Services is on.
  2. Scroll to System Services and make sure Motion Calibration & Distance is on.
  3. If location access for Workout was previously denied or reset, check the Apple Watch’s privacy settings for Workout location access. Menu labels can vary by iOS and watchOS version.

Apple says disabling Location Services prevents apps from using location information, which limits location-dependent functions. See Apple’s calibration guidance and location and GPS guidance.

Give the watch a clear view of the sky

Start outside rather than in a garage, beneath a roof, or under a dense canopy. Wait briefly in an open area before riding. Walls, vehicle roofs, tall buildings, trees, and mountains can obstruct satellite visibility, and Apple notes that finding visible satellites can take several minutes. There is no fixed acquisition time that applies to every watch and setting. If distance stays at zero for an unusually long time on an open road, investigate rather than assuming the delay is normal.

Account for your watch model

Apple’s current calibration guidance says Apple Watch Ultra and later, Series 8 and later, and SE (2nd generation) use the watch’s built-in GPS even when the iPhone is nearby. Older models may use the paired iPhone’s GPS when available. This changes whether the phone’s location and placement may affect a recording; it does not mean every older watch will fail without the phone.

Calibrate only after basic checks

Calibration can improve distance, pace, and calorie accuracy and help the watch learn stride information when GPS is limited or unavailable. Apple’s documented procedure is a walk or run, not a guaranteed repair for a cycling-specific software problem.

  1. Confirm that iPhone Location Services and Motion Calibration & Distance are enabled.
  2. Wear the watch and go to a flat, open outdoor area with good GPS reception and a clear sky.
  3. On Apple Watch, open Workout and start Outdoor Walk or Outdoor Run.
  4. Walk or run at your normal pace for about 20 minutes. Apple says sessions can be combined if needed.

Use reset as a later troubleshooting step, not the first one: in the iPhone Watch app, tap My Watch → Privacy → Reset Fitness Calibration Data. This resets learned calibration data and is not guaranteed to fix missing cycling records. Apple describes the calibration and reset steps in its calibration support article.

Check power-saving settings and personal details

Workout power settings

On Apple Watch, check Settings → Workout → Low Power Mode and any available Fewer GPS and Heart Rate Readings option. For supported walking, running, and hiking workouts, the latter reduces the frequency of GPS and heart-rate readings and turns off alerts, splits, and segments; it is not available on Series 6 or Series 7. These settings can reduce the detail or frequency of readings, but they do not automatically explain zero distance in every Outdoor Cycle workout. See Apple’s workout settings guidance.

Personal information

On iPhone, open Watch → My Watch → Health → Health Details → Edit and check the personal details used for fitness calculations, including height, weight, sex, age, and wheelchair status. Incorrect details can affect calorie totals and some distance estimates; they are a less likely explanation for a missing route map.

If heart rate or calories are missing

  • Wear the watch snugly enough to keep its back in contact with your skin without making it uncomfortable.
  • Clean and dry the watch back and your wrist, and make sure the watch is not sliding during the ride.
  • If the watch is wet or sweaty, dry it before judging heart-rate performance. Apple notes that sweat and water can interfere with heart-rate recording and that skin contact matters for wrist detection and heart-rate functions.

Apple’s heart-rate guidance and wrist-detection support page describe these conditions. Poor heart-rate contact can affect heart-rate data and calorie estimates, but it does not necessarily mean GPS distance or the route is broken.

If cadence, speed, or power readings are missing

GPS distance and Bluetooth sensor data are different. Compatible cycling accessories can provide metrics such as cadence, speed, power, and cycling power zones. On Apple Watch, open Settings → Bluetooth and check the sensor under Health Devices. Apple’s workout guide covers connecting cycling accessories.

A disconnected cadence or power sensor does not automatically indicate a GPS problem. Likewise, a working sensor can provide a cycling metric while route tracking is still missing. If you are testing for a fault, record with only one workout app at a time so overlapping recordings do not complicate the comparison.

Use the saved workout to narrow the cause

After the ride, open the workout in the iPhone Fitness app, then inspect its details and route map separately. A map is useful evidence that location data was recorded, but its presence does not guarantee that every summary number was calculated correctly.

  • No record: Focus on whether the workout was started, ended, or saved.
  • Timer but no map or distance: Recheck pause state, GPS conditions, and location permissions.
  • Map but no distance or incorrect speed: Compare the route and summary values; the display or processing may be at fault.
  • Route and distance but no heart rate: Focus on fit, skin contact, wrist detection, and heart-rate settings.
  • Apple Workout and another app disagree: The comparison helps isolate the recording app, but neither app is automatically more accurate in every situation.

Recover in a controlled order

  1. End and save the current workout correctly.
  2. Restart the Apple Watch and its paired iPhone.
  3. Check for available iOS and watchOS updates and note the versions installed.
  4. Test a short Outdoor Cycle workout in an open area.
  5. Temporarily disconnect third-party Bluetooth cycling sensors and test again.
  6. Record one comparison workout with Apple Workout or a trusted third-party app, not both at once. If one records correctly and the other does not, that narrows the likely problem to the failing app or its settings.
  7. Reset Fitness Calibration Data only if the problem appears to be inaccurate distance or pace rather than a complete failure to record.

These steps are diagnostic tests, not guaranteed fixes. Some users have described cycling workouts with missing distance or speed in the Apple Support Community and watchOS beta community. Such reports do not confirm a universal watchOS defect. If the issue began after an update or appears only in Outdoor Cycle, note your watch and iPhone models, iOS and watchOS versions, recording app, whether the phone was carried, whether a route saved, and which Bluetooth sensors were connected.

When to contact Apple Support

Contact Apple Support if multiple outdoor tests fail in open-sky conditions after confirming the workout type and state, location permissions, and relevant settings, and after restarting and checking updates. Also seek help if other location-based features fail, which may point beyond one workout record. A replacement watch is premature until a controlled test helps separate a settings, software, environment, or hardware issue.
