The second-generation Apple Watch SE is still a capable everyday smartwatch, but it is now a buy only at the right price. It handles notifications, Apple Pay, workouts, sleep tracking and safety features well. The catch: it is a 2022 model that is not compatible with watchOS 27. If a new SE 2 costs anything close to the $249 U.S. starting price of the SE 3, choose the newer watch. A well-kept SE 2 can still make sense at a deep discount, provided you accept its older software ceiling and check its battery carefully.
This is an evidence-based long-term assessment, not a first-person owner’s account: no specific review unit, battery-health reading or personal usage history was supplied. Apple’s battery figure and feature list below are manufacturer claims, not independent test results.
What the Apple Watch SE 2 offers
Introduced in 2022, the Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) is Apple’s lower-cost smartwatch, with an aluminum case in 40mm or 44mm sizes and GPS or GPS + Cellular connectivity. It uses the S8 SiP, has 32GB of storage and a Retina LTPO OLED display rated up to 1,000 nits. The display is not always on: you need to raise or tap your wrist to see it.
Other core hardware includes a second-generation optical heart sensor, compass, always-on altimeter, accelerometer and gyroscope. Apple rates it water-resistant to 50 meters and describes it as swim-proof. See Apple’s technical specifications for the full configuration details.

It is an iPhone accessory, not an Android smartwatch. Apple’s current SE 2 specification page lists an iPhone XS or later (including iPhone SE 2 or later) with iOS 18 or later. Requirements can change with watchOS versions, so check Apple’s current watchOS compatibility information against your iPhone before buying.
Good at the everyday Apple Watch basics
The SE 2’s strongest case is that its essentials are not basic in the sense of being unusable. It can show iPhone notifications, handle calls and messages, run Apple Pay, control music and podcasts, use Siri, provide Maps prompts and track common workouts. Its S8 chip and 32GB storage are sufficient for those ordinary tasks; the feature set is more limiting than the headline specifications.
For activity and general wellness, it tracks heart rate, workouts, Activity rings and sleep stages, and offers high- and low-heart-rate and irregular-rhythm notifications. Safety tools include Fall Detection, Crash Detection and Emergency SOS. It also has noise monitoring, medication and Mindfulness apps, a compass and elevation data. These are useful smartwatch and wellness functions, not a substitute for medical diagnosis or care.

Apple’s feature availability can depend on country, language and device configuration. In particular, do not assume every health or safety feature works identically everywhere; check Apple’s regional availability notes before relying on one.

The omissions you will notice
The most visible compromise is the display. Without an always-on mode, glancing at the time or workout data can take an extra wrist raise or screen tap. That may be a minor habit change for some people; it can be inconvenient in a meeting, during exercise, or when the wrist is not free to turn. Its bezels also look more prominent beside newer models.
The health-sensor gap matters more to some buyers than others. The SE 2 does not have ECG, wrist-temperature sensing or the hardware for sleep-apnea notifications. It also lacks blood-oxygen-related functionality and newer sensor-dependent health features associated with some other Apple Watch models. These are not features a software update can add: the required sensors are absent. If ECG or those advanced health tools are a reason you want a watch, shop for a compatible Series model instead and verify feature availability in your region.
The aluminum case and Ion-X front glass keep the watch light, but this is not a premium-material option: there is no stainless-steel or titanium SE 2, nor the sapphire crystal found on some premium configurations. That is not a reason to reject a clean unit, but used buyers should inspect for cracks and impact damage rather than treating cosmetic condition as the only concern.
Battery life, charging and sleep tracking
Apple rates the SE 2 for up to 18 hours of normal use. Its controlled test includes 90 time checks, 90 notifications, 45 minutes of app use and a 60-minute workout with music playback over that period. Apple’s GPS + Cellular test includes four hours of LTE use and 14 hours connected to an iPhone. Those are test conditions, not a promise that every watch will last a day: workouts, GPS, cellular use, notifications, sleep tracking and battery age all affect endurance. The full methodology is on Apple’s specifications page.

Apple says the included magnetic charging cable can charge the watch to 80% in about 1.5 hours. Daily charging is therefore part of ownership, and tracking sleep makes the timing more important: users need a regular window to top up before bed or after waking. The SE 2 does not offer the faster charging available on newer models.
For a used or refurbished watch, check Settings → Battery → Battery Health → Maximum Capacity in person or ask the seller for a clear view of that screen. Capacity is only one clue; rapid percentage drops, unexpected shutdowns and unusual heat are warning signs too. A reading around 90% can be reasonable, while a watch near 80% offers less reserve for workouts and sleep tracking. Treat substantially lower capacity as a battery risk and price accordingly; do not assume a particular repair or replacement outcome.
40mm or 44mm? GPS or Cellular?
Choose the case size for your wrist and eyes
- 40mm: smaller and lighter, often a better fit for a smaller wrist.
- 44mm: more screen area, making text and workout data easier to read and touch targets easier to hit.
For GPS versions, Apple lists weights of 26.4g for the 40mm case and 32.9g for the 44mm; both are 10.7mm deep. The 44mm has a larger battery in absolute capacity, but Apple gives both sizes the same up-to-18-hour rating. If possible, try one on; on the used market, a sound battery and a return window matter more than a small size preference.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteGPS is enough for most iPhone owners
Pick GPS if you normally carry your iPhone and mainly want workouts, activity tracking, notifications and Apple Pay. GPS + Cellular is useful if you want calls, messages or connectivity while away from your phone, or need the cellular setup for Apple Watch For Your Kids where supported. It costs more and usually requires a separate carrier plan; confirm carrier support and any activation or lock status before buying used. Cellular does not remove the need for an iPhone to set up and manage the watch in the normal Apple ecosystem.

Water resistance and buying a used watch
The 50-meter rating makes the SE 2 suitable for swimming under Apple’s stated conditions, but it is not waterproof. Water resistance can diminish with age, impacts or chemical exposure. Apple advises against high-velocity water and steam-room use. A secondhand watch with unknown impact or water history is a poor gamble for swimming, even if it looks immaculate; do not assume water damage will be covered.
Before paying for a used or refurbished SE 2, check all of the following:
- Activation Lock is removed and the watch can be paired to your iPhone.
- Battery Health is visible and acceptable to you.
- The screen and case have no cracks or serious impact damage.
- The touchscreen, Digital Crown and side button work throughout their range.
- The speaker and microphone work, and GPS and heart-rate tracking operate normally.
- The charger is included, or you have accounted for buying one.
- A Cellular model is not locked to a carrier you cannot use.
- The watch is not managed by a company or school.
- The seller provides a meaningful return period.
Apple has offered refurbished SE 2 stock, but availability, size, color and price change. Its refurbished listing is one example, not a guarantee of current inventory. A trustworthy return policy and confirmed battery condition can be worth more than a small cosmetic discount.
The decisive issue in 2026: software support
The SE 2 is compatible with watchOS 26, but Apple’s current watchOS 27 compatibility list does not include it. That does not mean existing features stop working as soon as a new version appears. It does mean buyers should treat watchOS 26 as its current major-version ceiling: the SE 2 will miss new watchOS 27 features, and future app compatibility and security-update timing are uncertain. Apple has not published a fixed end date for security updates, so there is no sound basis for promising a specific number of supported years.

This creates an important distinction: the SE 2 can remain perfectly usable for its current tasks while being a less attractive purchase today. If your priority is a low-cost watch for the functions it already has, the support limit may be an acceptable trade-off. If you want the longest possible runway, choose a newer model.
SE 2 vs. SE 3 and refurbished Series models
The SE 3 is the direct alternative. Apple’s U.S. buying page lists it from $249 for GPS 40mm, with GPS 44mm from $279 and GPS + Cellular from $299 at the time of the cited listing. Prices and availability vary by market and can change. It adds a newer platform, an always-on display and faster charging, and gives a new buyer a longer support horizon. See Apple’s SE 3 buying page for current U.S. options.
As a practical rule, compare the actual SE 2 price with the SE 3 you would buy, not with the SE 2’s launch price. If the SE 2 is only a little cheaper than $249, the SE 3 is the safer value. A clean SE 2 around $150 or less—roughly 40% below the SE 3’s U.S. starting price—can be more defensible for a buyer who only needs core features; that is a decision threshold, not a universal market price. For used stock, discount the SE 2 further if battery health is low, unknown or difficult to verify.

A refurbished Series 7, 8 or 9 may add features such as an always-on display or ECG, depending on model, but age, battery condition and current software compatibility all matter. Do not buy an older premium model on its feature list alone: a healthy, newer SE 2 can be a better bet than a worn Series watch. The current Series 11 is the more appropriate step up for buyers who specifically want premium display and health features; Apple’s current U.S. material lists it from $399. It is unnecessary if all you want is notifications, Apple Pay and ordinary workouts.
Who should buy the SE 2?
- Consider it as an inexpensive first Apple Watch if the price is substantially below the SE 3, the battery is in good condition, and you mainly want notifications, workouts, activity rings, sleep tracking and safety tools.
- Keep yours if it still lasts through your routine and you do not need ECG, temperature sensing, an always-on screen or watchOS 27 features. The release of a newer watch alone is not a reason to replace a working one.
- Skip it if you want advanced health sensors, a glanceable always-on display, faster charging, the longest practical software life, or multi-day battery endurance for training.
- Do not buy it if you use Android, have not checked iPhone compatibility, or are paying close to new SE 3 pricing.
For a used purchase, battery health, Activation Lock removal, carrier status where relevant and the seller’s return policy should outweigh a pristine-looking case or a bargain headline.
