Verdict: The Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) is still a capable, responsive smartwatch for iPhone owners who want notifications, workouts, sleep tracking, safety alerts and Apple’s watchOS ecosystem. But it is no longer the automatic budget recommendation. Apple now sells the newer Apple Watch SE 3 from $249, while the SE 2’s future software support is less certain. Buy the SE 2 only when a used or refurbished example is substantially cheaper than the SE 3, has healthy battery capacity and comes with a reliable return policy.
What changed since the original SE 2 review?
The SE 2 launched in 2022, when its combination of price, performance and Apple Watch essentials made it an easy recommendation. In 2026, the buying decision is different. The Apple Watch SE 3 now occupies Apple’s entry-level position, with U.S. pricing captured at $249 for the 40mm GPS model, $279 for 44mm GPS and $299 for GPS + Cellular. Prices and configurations can change, so treat those figures as a current reference rather than a permanent price list.
The SE 2 still appears on Apple’s current watchOS 26 compatibility list. However, reporting on Apple’s announced watchOS 27 compatibility says the SE 2 will be excluded. That does not make an existing watch unusable overnight, but it does shorten the sensible ownership horizon: future app compatibility, security updates and pairing requirements can change after major operating-system support ends.

Who should buy the Apple Watch SE 2?
- Buy it if you already own a compatible iPhone, need core Apple Watch features and find a deeply discounted unit with good battery health.
- Consider it if you are buying a first smartwatch, buying for a teenager, or mainly want notifications, activity tracking, workouts and safety features.
- Skip it if you want an always-on display, ECG, temperature sensing, newer health features, multi-day battery life or the longest possible software-support window.
- Buy the SE 3 instead if the price difference is modest or you want a new device with a longer expected support runway.
Design, sizes and comfort
The SE 2 uses an aluminum case in Midnight, Starlight or Silver. Its interchangeable band system gives it access to Apple’s large watch-band ecosystem, including many third-party options. The watch is slim enough for everyday wear, but the best size depends on both wrist size and reading preference.
| Specification | 40mm | 44mm |
|---|---|---|
| Case height | 40mm | 44mm |
| Case width | 34mm | 38mm |
| Thickness | 10.7mm | 10.7mm |
| Display resolution | 324 × 394 | 368 × 448 |
| Display area | 759 sq. mm | 977 sq. mm |
| GPS weight | 26.4g | 32.9g |
| Wrist fit | 130–200mm | 140–245mm |
The 40mm model is the better choice for smaller wrists and lower weight. The 44mm version provides more room for text, workout metrics and on-screen controls, making it preferable for users who find small smartwatch displays difficult to read.
Its Ion-X front glass is less scratch-resistant than the sapphire crystal used on some premium Apple Watch models. Apple rates the SE 2 as swim-proof with 50-meter water resistance, but it is not waterproof, dive-certified or designed for scuba diving, high-pressure water or high-impact water sports. Water resistance can also diminish with age and wear. See Apple’s technical specifications for the stated limitations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The SE 2 has a Retina LTPO OLED display rated up to 1,000 nits. Text, complications and workout information are clear enough for normal use, and the Digital Crown and side button make navigation familiar to anyone who has used an Apple Watch.
The major compromise is the absence of an always-on display. The screen turns off rather than continuously showing the time or complications, so you must raise your wrist or tap the display. That is not a deal-breaker for a first-time buyer, but it is noticeable during meetings, cooking, workouts and any situation where a deliberate wrist movement is inconvenient.
Apple’s comparison tool makes the display difference clear: higher-tier and newer models offer always-on viewing, while the SE 2 does not.
Everyday performance and watchOS
The S8 SiP and 32GB of storage remain adequate for ordinary watchOS use. The SE 2 can handle notifications, apps, timers, alarms, music controls, maps, Siri, Apple Pay, calendar reminders, weather and Find Devices without requiring a flagship model. Calls and messages work through a paired iPhone on GPS models, while cellular models can handle more tasks away from the phone when activated with a supported plan.

Storage is sufficient for a normal collection of apps, music and podcasts, although users who store a large offline media library should manage space more carefully. The watchOS app ecosystem is one of the SE 2’s strongest advantages over many inexpensive fitness watches.
There is an important distinction between working today and being a sensible long-term purchase. Apple currently lists the SE 2 for watchOS 26, while current reporting on watchOS 27 compatibility says it will be dropped from the next major release. Apple has not promised a fixed number of future support years. Existing features may continue working, but buyers should not assume every future app, service or iPhone pairing combination will remain supported indefinitely.
Fitness tracking: strong for everyday users
The SE 2 covers the activities most casual and recreational users care about:
- Workout tracking and automatic workout detection
- GPS-based outdoor exercise
- Running metrics and heart-rate zones
- Cycling and hiking activity
- Activity rings and trends
- Swimming workouts
- Fall Detection during ordinary use and workouts
Its hardware includes a compass, always-on altimeter, high-g accelerometer, high-dynamic-range gyroscope, ambient-light sensor and second-generation optical heart sensor. These sensors support elevation, orientation, movement and heart-rate features. The full specification list is available from Apple.

Garmin and Apple Watch Ultra models offer longer battery life and more specialized training, mapping and outdoor features. The SE 2 is best understood as a convenient daily fitness companion rather than a dedicated expedition or marathon instrument.
Health and wellness features—and their limits
The watch can monitor heart rate, provide high- and low-heart-rate notifications, offer irregular-rhythm notifications where available, track sleep duration and sleep stages, and support mindfulness, noise exposure alerts, medication reminders and basic activity trends.
It does not include the electrical heart sensor required for the ECG app. It also lacks temperature sensing, blood-oxygen functionality and newer features such as sleep-apnea notifications, sleep score and Vitals found on newer models. Blood-oxygen availability can also vary by exact model, country and U.S. import or sales restrictions, so it should never be assumed from the Apple Watch name alone.

Safety features
Safety is one of the SE 2’s most valuable advantages over basic trackers. It supports Emergency SOS, Fall Detection, Crash Detection, Medical ID, emergency contacts and heart-rate alerts.
Emergency SOS requires a cellular connection or Wi-Fi calling with an internet connection through the watch or a nearby iPhone. Availability varies by country and region. Fall and crash detection can miss events or produce false positives, so they should be treated as helpful safeguards rather than guaranteed emergency response.
GPS versus GPS + Cellular
| Model | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| GPS | People who usually carry an iPhone and want the lowest cost | Most independent connectivity requires the iPhone or suitable Wi-Fi |
| GPS + Cellular | Running, commuting, calls and messages away from an iPhone; Family Setup where supported | Higher purchase price, carrier activation, recurring plan costs and potentially shorter battery life |
Cellular does not mean free connectivity. You generally need a supported carrier, compatible account and activated plan. Coverage, roaming, emergency calling and Family Setup vary by country. A cellular model is also required for Family Setup or Apple Watch For Your Kids where that service is supported.
GPS models can still support certain emergency calls under appropriate conditions, but they are not equivalent to a cellular watch for ordinary independent use.
Battery life and charging
Apple rates the SE 2 for up to 18 hours of normal use and approximately 1.5 hours to reach 80% charge under its stated test conditions. That rating is not a promise of 18 hours in every routine. Cellular use, weak signal, GPS workouts, notifications, settings, battery age and workload all affect endurance. Apple’s technical specifications describe the testing basis.
Daily charging is normal. Sleep tracking therefore requires charging before bed or during another part of the day. Long GPS sessions and cellular activity can make the routine more restrictive. If multi-day battery life is your priority, Garmin, Fitbit and Amazfit models deserve consideration, although they do not reproduce Apple’s iPhone integration, iMessage handling, Apple Pay and watchOS app experience.

Apple Watch SE 2 versus SE 3
| Area | Apple Watch SE 2 | Apple Watch SE 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Position | 2022 model | Current entry-level model |
| Current Apple price | No longer the current model on Apple’s main buying page | From $249 for 40mm GPS in the cited U.S. listing |
| Software outlook | Listed for watchOS 26; reportedly excluded from watchOS 27 | Newer model with the stronger expected support position |
| Display | OLED, no always-on display | Always-on OLED |
| Chip | S8 | S10 |
| Battery rating | Up to 18 hours | Up to 18 hours, with newer charging and low-power claims on Apple’s current page |
| Best buying route | Discounted used or refurbished | New |
The SE 3 is the straightforward new-buy recommendation. The SE 2 only makes stronger financial sense when the discount is large enough to compensate for its older platform, missing features and shorter support outlook.
Alternatives
Apple Watch SE 3
This is the direct replacement and the default choice for most people buying new. Consult Apple’s official buying page for current prices and configurations.
Apple Watch Series 11
The Series 11 is the better fit for buyers who want an always-on display, ECG, temperature sensing, sleep-apnea notifications, newer health features and a longer rated battery life than the SE line. Apple lists it from $399 on its current Watch shop. It is unnecessary if you only need notifications, casual workouts and basic safety tools.
Apple Watch Ultra 3
The Ultra 3 is intended for rugged use, endurance activities, outdoor navigation, a larger case and greater battery capacity. Apple lists it from $700 on the Apple Watch shop. It is not a budget alternative for ordinary smartwatch use.
Garmin and Fitbit
Fitness-first alternatives can offer longer battery life and, in some cases, Android compatibility. They generally do not match the seamless iPhone, iMessage, Apple Pay and watchOS integration that makes an Apple Watch attractive to iPhone owners. Compare current models and prices separately because they vary substantially.

There is no universal acceptable battery-health percentage. A unit around 85% may be reasonable at a deep discount, but not if it costs only slightly less than a new SE 3. A low-capacity battery can increase charging frequency, limit GPS sessions and erase the savings through service or replacement costs.

Common buying and pairing problems
It will not pair with your iPhone
Check that the iPhone is an iPhone XS or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), and that it runs iOS 18 or later according to Apple’s current specification page. The exact required iOS version can change with the watchOS version.
Other common causes include an outdated iPhone, an incompatible watchOS pairing combination, a watch still linked to another Apple Account, or an incomplete reset. Ask the seller to erase the watch and remove Activation Lock, update the iPhone, restart both devices and pair through the Watch app. If Activation Lock remains, stop the purchase or return the watch.
The watch has been exposed to water
Do not treat the 50-meter rating as a guarantee against every type of water damage. Avoid units with unexplained sensor, speaker, charging or display problems, especially when the seller cannot provide a return window.
Price guidance: when does the SE 2 make sense?
Price thresholds depend on size, GPS or cellular capability, battery health, cosmetic condition, warranty, included accessories and local pricing. Use the following as decision guidance rather than universal market facts:
- Excellent deal: A deeply discounted unit, preferably refurbished or used, with approximately 90% or better battery health, verified pairing and a return policy.
- Conditional deal: A moderately discounted unit when you only need basic Apple Watch functions and accept the shorter support outlook.
- Poor deal: A new or old-stock SE 2 priced close to the SE 3, especially without meaningful warranty coverage.
- Avoid: Unknown Activation Lock status, damaged glass, materially degraded battery health, no return window or a price approaching current-generation models.
AppleCare+ may be worth considering for accidental-damage concerns, but coverage, eligibility and pricing depend on the country, device and purchase channel. Check Apple’s current terms rather than relying on an old plan price.
Final verdict
The Apple Watch SE 2 is not the “perfect budget smartwatch” for everyone in 2026. It remains a good basic Apple Watch: responsive enough for everyday use, strong for notifications and workouts, useful for sleep and wellness tracking, and equipped with valuable safety features. Its biggest weaknesses are the missing always-on display and advanced health sensors, daily charging, and an increasingly limited software-support outlook.
Buy the SE 2 only when the discount is substantial and the unit’s battery, Activation Lock status and return protection are verified. Buy the SE 3 for a new purchase. Choose a Series model if ECG, newer health features or an always-on display matter, and look beyond Apple if multi-day battery life or Android compatibility is more important than iPhone integration.
