Yes—an Apple Watch SE 3 can record a marathon and play downloaded audio through AirPods without an iPhone nearby. The uncertain part is battery life: Apple’s 18-hour rating is not a promise of four to six hours of continuous GPS tracking and music. Test your exact watch, earbuds, settings, and running app on a long training run before relying on them at the start line.

What works without an iPhone—and what does not

The SE has built-in GPS, so it can record an outdoor run, including distance, pace, elapsed time, heart rate, and other workout data, while the paired iPhone is elsewhere. Apple documents using the watch independently at Apple Watch without an iPhone.

AirPods can connect to the watch over Bluetooth. Downloaded music, podcasts, or audiobooks can play without the iPhone, Wi-Fi, or cellular service; Apple explains offline playback at its guide to adding audio to Apple Watch. Calls, messages, streaming, and some app features are different: they may need a cellular connection, Wi-Fi, or the iPhone.

  • GPS: Tracks the outdoor workout without a phone nearby.
  • Offline audio: Plays content already downloaded onto the watch through connected Bluetooth headphones.
  • Cellular: Adds connectivity when supported, activated, and covered; it is not required for basic workout recording or downloaded audio.

For the simplest race setup, pair the AirPods with the watch, download your audio, and start playback from the watch. Apple’s AirPods connection guidance covers connection and pairing; other Bluetooth headphones can be paired from Settings → Bluetooth on the watch.

Which Apple Watch SE does this advice cover?

Apple Watch SE 3

As of September 2026, the current generation is Apple Watch SE 3, introduced in 2025. Apple lists built-in GPS, Bluetooth 5.3, an 18-hour normal-use battery rating, and running features including customizable workout views, Pacer, Race Route, heart-rate zones, training load, and running dynamics. It comes in GPS and GPS + Cellular versions. See Apple’s SE 3 specifications and battery-test details and the technical specifications.

Apple Watch SE 2

The SE 2 also has an 18-hour rated battery life and supports built-in GPS and running workouts, but it is older hardware and should not be treated as interchangeable with SE 3. Apple’s SE 2 specifications identify its model features. Battery-saving workout options depend on model and software; check the requirements in Apple’s battery guidance before race day. A used SE 2 with reduced battery capacity deserves particular caution.

Will the battery last the race?

It might, but Apple’s published figure cannot settle the question for an individual marathon. The SE 3 is rated for up to 18 hours of normal use; Apple’s test includes only a 60-minute workout with music playback. That does not establish a runtime for a continuous GPS marathon with audio. Battery health, screen use, notifications, cellular reception, temperature, app choice, and audio method all affect actual endurance. Apple describes the test conditions at its SE 3 battery page.

A runner finishing in roughly four hours has a more manageable battery target than someone expecting six hours or longer, but finish time alone is not enough to guarantee success. Streaming, cellular use, navigation, third-party apps, weak signal, or a worn battery can increase risk. A watch that survives the finish may also have little charge left for transit, calls, or post-race tracking.

  • Healthy SE 3, fully charged, downloaded audio, around four-hour target: A reasonable setup to try, not a guarantee. Validate it on a long run.
  • Four to five hours, or an SE 2: Treat endurance as uncertain and test the exact configuration over a comparable duration.
  • Six hours or more, streaming, cellular, navigation, or a battery that has struggled on long runs: The risk is meaningfully higher. Carry a phone or choose a watch with more battery margin.

Do not use the marathon as the first full-distance test. Run with the same workout app, audio, settings, and phone arrangement you plan to use on race day, then check how much battery remains.

How to reduce battery drain

Use Low Power Mode thoughtfully

On the watch, press the side button to open Control Center, tap the battery-percentage button, then turn on Low Power Mode. Apple also documents a workout setting: open Settings → Workout → Low Power Mode. Depending on model and software, this can turn off the Always-On display, reduce background measurements, and limit some network activity or notifications. Details are in Apple’s battery-saving guide and its workout Low Power Mode guide.

Consider fewer GPS and heart-rate readings

On supported models with watchOS 9.1 or later, open Settings → Workout → Fewer GPS and Heart Rate Readings. This reduces how frequently GPS and heart-rate readings are taken during outdoor workouts. Apple warns that alerts, splits, and segments can be affected, so it is a trade-off rather than a free battery improvement. Check the feature’s availability and effects in Apple’s battery guidance.

Prefer offline audio and limit extras

  • Download the exact playlist or episodes onto the watch; do not stream if you can avoid it.
  • Disable notifications you do not need and avoid repeatedly opening maps or network-dependent apps.
  • Do not use cellular during the race unless you need its connectivity. Apple’s cellular battery test assumes four hours of cellular connection over an 18-hour period, not continuous race use.
  • Check battery health at Settings → Battery → Battery Health.
  • Charge the watch fully before leaving for the start.

Apple says the watch is most efficient when connected to its paired iPhone over Bluetooth, but keeping the phone nearby is optional for GPS workouts and downloaded audio. If phone-free operation is essential, reproduce that setup during training.

Race-day preparation

The day before

  1. Update the watch and iPhone well ahead of the event, not at the venue.
  2. Charge the watch, AirPods, and AirPods case.
  3. Check battery health and download audio to the watch. Confirm the content is actually stored on the watch, not merely visible in the iPhone library.
  4. Open the Workout app and set up the outdoor run, workout views, alerts, pace targets, and any spoken prompts you want.
  5. Pair and test the exact AirPods you will wear. Put the iPhone out of range or turn it off and confirm audio still plays.
  6. Decide whether you will carry the iPhone for backup tracking or emergency contact, and check the event’s rules on headphones.

At the start

  1. Begin with a fully charged watch and earbuds, worn and secured as they were in training.
  2. Confirm AirPods are connected to the watch and your downloaded audio is available.
  3. Start an outdoor run and wait for GPS acquisition before starting the workout recording.
  4. Start audio from the watch. Confirm the workout metrics and alerts are configured as intended.

During and after the race

  • Use the configured workout controls rather than repeatedly opening apps, and check battery at reasonable intervals.
  • If charge is falling faster than expected, stop nonessential audio or network use and preserve the workout.
  • End and save the workout deliberately after the finish, then let the watch sync with the iPhone when available.

Workout app, pace prompts, and GPS limitations

Apple’s built-in Workout app is the least complicated choice for recording a run. It provides standard running metrics, and SE 3 adds features such as Pacer, Race Route, heart-rate zones, and customizable workout views, as listed in Apple’s SE 3 feature details. Third-party apps may offer training plans, coaching, or syncing, but their offline behavior and battery use vary by app and version. Test the exact app during a long run rather than assuming it behaves like Apple’s app.

Spoken pace or workout prompts come from the Workout app or a third-party app—not from AirPods by themselves. Configure the prompts in advance, check volume over road noise, and verify whether an alert pauses, ducks, or mixes with music. Use fewer prompts if constant interruptions are distracting. Maintain awareness of traffic, cyclists, volunteers, and other runners; headphone rules vary by event, so check your race’s policy.

GPS is useful for tracking and pacing, but it will not necessarily show the certified course distance exactly. Buildings, tree cover, tunnels, course turns, crowded starts, and signal conditions can affect readings. Review auto-pause before race day: a pause at an aid station can alter elapsed-versus-moving data or disrupt your expectations for splits.

AirPods and race conditions

AirPods are convenient, but a successful Bluetooth connection does not guarantee comfortable or dependable listening for the full race. Fit can change with sweat and repetitive movement, and battery life varies by AirPods model, listening mode, volume, and microphone use. Wind and sweat can also affect the listening experience. Test the same earbuds on several long training runs rather than first trying them on race morning.

Noise cancellation can make it harder to hear traffic, cyclists, course marshals, or runners around you. Consider a transparency mode or keeping one ear open when appropriate, and follow the specific event’s headphone rules. Exact battery and water-resistance claims depend on AirPods generation; do not assume every model has the same rating.

What can go wrong—and what to do

AirPods will not connect

Check that Airplane Mode is off and the earbuds are charged. On the watch, open Settings → Bluetooth and select the AirPods. If they appear but will not connect, forget the device and pair it again before race day. Apple’s connection guide provides pairing steps.

Audio is missing offline

Confirm that the playlist, podcast episodes, or audiobook were downloaded onto the watch, then test with the iPhone powered off or out of Bluetooth range. Seeing an item in the phone’s library does not by itself confirm a watch download. See Apple’s offline audio instructions.

Battery drops unexpectedly

Check battery health, stop streaming, reduce cellular use, and disable unnecessary notifications. Low Power Mode can help, but reduced GPS and heart-rate readings may affect splits, alerts, and data detail. Avoid repeated use of maps or network-dependent apps.

The watch records unexpected distance or stops recording

Confirm you selected an outdoor run and waited for GPS to acquire a signal. Check whether auto-pause or a manual pause was triggered. A GPS watch can differ from the certified course distance. If the watch battery reaches zero, the live workout and watch-based audio stop; the portion not yet saved will not be recorded normally. A carried phone can provide backup tracking only if you are running an app on it.

Who should use this setup?

Runner’s situation Practical choice
Already owns a healthy SE 3, expects around four hours, and wants offline audio Reasonable to use after testing the exact setup on a long run.
Expects four to five hours or has an SE 2 Test carefully; battery condition and settings matter, and the result is not assured by the published rating.
Expects six hours or longer, uses streaming or cellular, or has seen the watch die on long runs Carry the iPhone or consider a longer-endurance running watch.
Needs calls or messages away from the phone A GPS + Cellular model with a compatible activated plan, or a carried iPhone, provides connectivity; account for added battery use.
Prioritizes long battery life and dedicated endurance or training features over Apple integration Compare a Garmin- or COROS-style running watch, or an Apple Watch Ultra-class model. Verify the specific model’s current features and battery claims before choosing.

If you are buying specifically for a marathon, battery margin matters more than the convenience of staying within the Apple ecosystem. The SE is attractive if you also want general smartwatch functions and are prepared to test the race configuration; it is a less comfortable choice if you cannot tolerate battery uncertainty.
