A last-minute leak made an Apple Watch SE 3 announcement look highly likely—and the prediction proved correct. The leak appeared on September 7, 2025; Apple announced the Apple Watch SE 3 on September 9 and began retail sales on September 19. However, one of its biggest specifications claims was wrong: Apple Watch SE 3 uses the S10 chip, not the rumored S11.
The leak was strong evidence of an announcement, not proof of the specifications
The original report from 9to5Mac described alleged processor and model identifiers for three expected watches: Apple Watch Series 11, Apple Watch Ultra 3, and Apple Watch SE 3.
The information came from an anonymous X account that 9to5Mac described as having a strong previous track record. That history was the main reason the report treated an SE 3 announcement as increasingly likely. The account was not directly identified by the publication, so the leak was never official confirmation.

Model identifiers appearing immediately before a product event can be more meaningful than a broad prediction because they may indicate that Apple is preparing specific hardware for release. They still do not prove that every associated specification is correct.

What the original report predicted
The leak allegedly linked identifiers to Series 11, Ultra 3, and SE 3. It also suggested that all three watches could use Apple’s forthcoming S11 processor.
That processor claim should have been treated as speculation. A model identifier can support the existence of a product without confirming its final chip, design, price, display, battery life, health sensors, or retail date.
Earlier rumors had also mentioned a possible plastic casing designed to reduce the SE’s price and displays closer in size to those used by the Apple Watch Series 7, Series 8, and Series 9. Neither possibility was firmly established. Later reporting suggested the plastic design was in jeopardy, and Apple ultimately announced an aluminum watch in 40mm and 44mm sizes.
What Apple actually announced
Apple introduced Apple Watch SE 3 on September 9, 2025. Preorders opened that day, while retail availability began Friday, September 19. The U.S. launch price started at $249, although that is a launch-price reference rather than a verified current August 2026 street price.

Apple’s official announcement and technical specifications confirm the following:
- S10 chip: a 64-bit dual-core processor with a four-core Neural Engine.
- Always-On display: an Always-On Retina OLED LTPO display with brightness up to 1,000 nits.
- Cases: 40mm and 44mm aluminum models in midnight and starlight finishes.
- Storage: 64GB.
- Connectivity: GPS models and GPS + Cellular models, with 5G capability in supported markets and on compatible carriers.
- Charging: approximately 80% charge in about 45 minutes, according to Apple.
- Durability: Ion-X front glass, which Apple says is four times more crack-resistant than the previous generation.
- Battery rating: up to 18 hours of normal use, or up to 32 hours in Low Power Mode.
Apple’s battery figures are manufacturer estimates, not independent test results. Actual endurance depends on factors such as cellular use, GPS workouts, notifications, display settings, temperature, and battery age.
Health, safety, and software features
The SE 3 adds or supports a broader set of health and safety tools than the leak itself established. Apple lists wrist-temperature sensing, Sleep Score, sleep stages, retrospective ovulation estimates, and sleep apnea notifications, alongside established features such as Cycle Tracking, high- and low-heart-rate notifications, irregular-rhythm notifications, Fall Detection, Crash Detection, Emergency SOS, and Check In.
The watch also supports Double Tap, wrist-flick gestures, on-device Siri, and Apple Watch For Your Kids. It is compatible with watchOS 26, although individual features vary by paired device, region, language, and software version.

These health functions have important limits. Sleep apnea notifications are not a general-purpose medical diagnosis, and retrospective ovulation estimates are not guaranteed fertility predictions. Availability can depend on regional rules, regulatory approval, age, and compatible hardware. Medical concerns should be discussed with a clinician.

Who should consider Apple Watch SE 3?
The SE 3 is Apple’s entry-level current Apple Watch and is best understood as a value-focused option—not automatically the best Apple Watch for every buyer.
- New Apple Watch buyers: It offers the core Apple Watch experience, an Always-On display, safety features, and current software support without moving to Apple’s premium models.
- Owners of much older watches: The newer chip, display, charging system, and health features can make it a substantial upgrade, although the value depends on the condition and capabilities of the existing watch.
- Families: Apple Watch For Your Kids support may be useful, subject to carrier, region, and setup requirements.
- Buyers prioritizing price: The $249 U.S. launch price established the SE 3 as Apple’s lower-cost current option, but buyers should check current pricing before purchasing.
Buyers who need premium materials, larger display choices, advanced sensors, or the broader feature set of Apple’s flagship models should compare it with Apple Watch Series 11. The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is aimed more at buyers prioritizing ruggedness, outdoor use, and premium hardware than at casual users.
Compatibility and cellular costs matter
Apple Watch SE 3 requires an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later. This is a hard prerequisite, so anyone using an older iPhone should not buy the watch without first checking compatibility.

GPS + Cellular models also require a compatible wireless carrier and service plan. Carrier participation, eligibility, 5G availability, and pricing vary by country and provider. The watch’s purchase price is therefore not necessarily the total cost of ownership. Check Apple’s cellular information and your carrier’s Apple Watch add-on pricing before choosing cellular.
Cellular connectivity does not remove every dependence on an iPhone. Setup, some features, and certain Apple Intelligence capabilities may still require a compatible nearby iPhone, Bluetooth headphones, supported software, language, and region.
Final verdict on the leak
The leak was useful evidence that an Apple Watch SE 3 announcement was imminent, and its central timing prediction succeeded. But it was not reliable enough to establish the final product specification. The S11 claim was wrong for the SE 3, while the plastic-case and larger-display suggestions remained unconfirmed or failed to match Apple’s final announcement.
The correct lesson is to separate evidence that Apple is preparing a device from evidence that confirms what the device will contain. Apple’s September 9 announcement—not the anonymous leak—settled the SE 3’s chip, materials, display, features, price, and release schedule.
For current buyers, the SE 3 is a sensible entry-level choice if its aluminum design, 40mm or 44mm size, health feature set, and iPhone compatibility meet their needs. Buyers wanting more advanced hardware should look higher in Apple’s range, while cellular shoppers should calculate the ongoing service cost before upgrading.
