Apple Watch SE 3 is a released product, not a rumor: Apple announced it on September 9, 2025, opened preorders that day, and made it available in stores on September 19. Apple’s U.S. price starts at $249 for the 40mm GPS model. Its most notable upgrades over SE 2 include an Always-On display, S10 chip, faster charging, wrist-temperature sensing, newer sleep features, and 5G on the cellular version.
It remains Apple’s entry-level watch, so it does not include every premium health sensor found on higher-end models. Before buying, check that your iPhone meets the software requirement and decide whether cellular service is worth its ongoing cost.
Release date and availability
Apple announced Apple Watch SE 3 on September 9, 2025; preorders began the same day, with retail availability starting September 19, 2025. As of September 24, 2026, it is an established product in Apple’s lineup. Apple announced availability across multiple countries and regions, but features, carrier support, and health functions can vary by location, language, software, and regulatory status. See Apple’s launch announcement for the original release details.
U.S. price and what affects the total
Apple’s U.S. purchase page lists these starting prices, before sales tax and optional band upgrades:

| Configuration | Starting price |
|---|---|
| 40mm GPS | $249 |
| 44mm GPS | $279 |
| 40mm GPS + Cellular | $299 |
| 44mm GPS + Cellular | $329 |
These are U.S. prices on Apple’s purchase page; prices and configurations elsewhere can differ. Band selection can raise the checkout total substantially. GPS + Cellular hardware does not include cellular service: a compatible carrier plan may add a recurring charge, and pricing, roaming, and eligibility depend on the carrier. Apple Watch For Your Kids requires a GPS + Cellular model. Financing divides payment over time rather than changing the cash price, and trade-in value varies. AppleCare+ is optional; Apple’s U.S. page lists Theft and Loss coverage at $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year when configuring the watch, subject to current terms.
What’s new in Apple Watch SE 3?
Always-On display
SE 3 adds an Always-On Retina display, so the time and supported information remain visible without raising the wrist or tapping the screen. Apple lists brightness up to 1,000 nits on its current U.S. purchase page. The feature makes quick glances more convenient, though display use affects power consumption; the SE 3’s screen should not be assumed to match every display capability of Series or Ultra models.
S10 chip, Siri, and gestures
The S10 chip enables features including Double Tap, wrist flick, and on-device Siri for requests that do not require an internet connection. Apple says Siri can access health and fitness information on the watch. Double Tap—bringing thumb and index finger together twice—triggers a primary action in supported contexts; wrist flick dismisses certain notifications or interactions. Neither gesture replaces touch or voice control in every app. Feature availability for Siri can depend on software, language, region, and paired iPhone.

Apple’s current U.S. purchase page claims a 0–80% charge in about 30 minutes and up to eight hours of battery life from 15 minutes of charging. Apple’s September 9, 2025 launch announcement instead said about 80% in 45 minutes, while also stating that 15 minutes could provide up to eight hours. These are Apple claims, not independent test results; charging and battery results vary with use and conditions. The current store claim is the newer published figure, while the launch release documents the earlier one.

5G on the cellular model
The GPS + Cellular SE 3 supports 5G. Apple says its cellular modem enables higher throughput and faster downloads with lower power use than the previous cellular implementation; actual performance depends on carrier, signal, network conditions, and plan. Apple’s U.S. page identifies AT&T, Boost Mobile, T-Mobile, and Verizon among supported national carriers. Confirm current compatibility and plan terms with your carrier before choosing cellular.
Wrist temperature and cycle insights
Two wrist-temperature sensors and an algorithm that accounts for environmental temperature support Vitals data, Cycle Tracking, and retrospective ovulation estimates. These estimates are not a direct measurement of ovulation, a diagnosis, or a substitute for medical care.
Sleep Score and sleep apnea notifications
SE 3 supports Sleep Score and sleep-related wrist-temperature insights. Apple also says it can provide sleep apnea notifications by identifying patterns from accelerometer data over a 30-day period. A notification is not a definitive diagnosis; discuss it with a healthcare professional. Availability and requirements can vary by country, software, age, and regulatory status, so check Apple’s current health-feature information for your location before relying on it.

- High and low heart-rate notifications, irregular-rhythm notifications, and cardio fitness.
- Cycle Tracking, wrist-temperature sensing, sleep tracking, and Sleep Score.
- Fall Detection, Crash Detection, Emergency SOS, and Check In.
- Workout and Activity apps, GPS workout tracking, training load, and cardio recovery.
- Water resistance up to 50 meters, according to Apple.
SE 3 does not have every sensor or health feature available on higher-end Apple Watch models, including ECG. Health functionality may depend on region, age, settings, software, and iPhone compatibility. Treat notifications as prompts for attention, not general-purpose diagnoses.
Size, materials, battery, and compatibility
| Specification | Apple Watch SE 3 |
|---|---|
| Case sizes | 40mm and 44mm |
| Case material and finishes | Aluminum; Midnight or Starlight |
| Chip | S10 |
| Display | Always-On Retina; up to 1,000 nits listed on Apple’s current U.S. page |
| Battery life | Up to 24 hours of normal use and up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode, per Apple’s current U.S. page; the September 2025 launch release said up to 18 hours |
| Charging | Current U.S. page: 0–80% in about 30 minutes; launch release: about 45 minutes |
| Water resistance | Up to 50 meters, per Apple |
| Connectivity | GPS or GPS + Cellular with 5G |
| Software pairing requirement | Apple stated at launch that watchOS 26 requires iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 |
The battery figures reflect different Apple publications: its September 2025 launch announcement said up to 18 hours, while its current U.S. purchase page lists up to 24 hours of normal use and up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode. Those are stated maximums, not guarantees of a particular runtime; Always-On use, settings, cellular connectivity, and activity can affect battery life. Check Apple’s technical specifications for the relevant regional details. The software requirement above is Apple’s launch-era statement for watchOS 26, not a promise about future watchOS compatibility. Setup still requires a supported iPhone; cellular does not make the watch fully independent of Apple’s iPhone ecosystem.
Apple Watch SE 3 vs. SE 2
| Feature | SE 3 | SE 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Chip | S10 | Older-generation chip |
| Always-On display | Yes | No |
| Fast charging | Yes | No |
| Wrist-temperature sensing | Yes | No |
| Sleep Score | Yes | No |
| Retrospective ovulation estimates | Yes | No |
| Sleep apnea notifications | Apple says yes; regional and system requirements apply | Not a launch feature |
| Double Tap and wrist flick | Yes | No |
| On-device Siri with health-data access | Yes, for supported requests and requirements | More limited |
| Cellular generation | 5G-capable cellular version | Older cellular capability |
| Case material and sizes | Aluminum; 40mm and 44mm | Aluminum; 40mm and 44mm |
This is a substantive update rather than a cosmetic one: the display and charging changes affect everyday convenience, while temperature and sleep functions matter most to people who will use those insights. An SE 2 can still be a sensible purchase if deeply discounted and those features are unimportant; at a price close to SE 3, the newer model offers more.

SE 3 is for buyers who want core Apple Watch functions and safety features at the lowest current Apple entry price. Consider a higher-end model if a specific premium capability matters:
Rank #4
- A FULL-FEATURED HEALTH TRACKER—Apple Watch Series 11 gives you invaluable insights about your body, right from your wrist. Take an ECG anytime* and get alerts for a high and low heart rate or an irregular rhythm*—so you can stay closer to your heart. You can also view your overnight health tracking metrics with the Vitals app* and be notified of possible sleep apnea.*
- KNOW YOUR SLEEP SCORE—With advanced sleep tracking, Series 11 gives you a daily sleep score. It’s an easy way to help measure and understand the quality of your sleep, so you can make it more restorative.
- GET HYPERTENSION NOTIFICATIONS—Did you know that Series 11 can spot signs of chronic high blood pressure? By analyzing how your blood vessels respond to beats of the heart, it can notify you of possible hypertension.*
- SAFETY FEATURES—A smartwatch that puts your safety first. Series 11 can detect a hard fall or severe car crash, automatically help connect you with emergency services, and notify your emergency contacts.* Check In can automatically notify a loved one when you’ve arrived at your destination.
- A POWERFUL FITNESS TRACKER—With advanced metrics and motivating features like Pacer, Heart Rate Zones, training load, and Workout Buddy powered by Apple Intelligence from your nearby iPhone*—Series 11 is made to help everyone stay active, from runners and hikers to strength-training enthusiasts.
- Choose Series 11 if you want a more premium watch and additional health sensors such as ECG. Check Apple’s current lineup for the exact feature set and price rather than assuming those details from the SE 3’s price.
- Choose Ultra 3 if rugged construction, outdoor-oriented functions, premium materials, or greater battery capacity are priorities. It is excessive for many people who mainly need notifications, basic workouts, safety tools, and a lower purchase cost.
- Stay with SE 3 if ECG and other premium sensors are not essential and its display, charging, and tracking features meet your needs.
Apple’s launch announcement positions the models within its lineup, but does not provide a like-for-like current price comparison here: Apple’s announcement.
GPS or GPS + Cellular?
Choose GPS
- Your iPhone is usually nearby.
- You mainly want workout tracking, notifications, timers, music controls, and health features.
- You want the lowest upfront price and no watch-specific cellular plan.
GPS models still have built-in GPS for workout route, pace, and distance tracking.
Choose GPS + Cellular
- You regularly leave your iPhone behind and want supported calls, messages, or connectivity from the watch.
- You need a cellular model for Apple Watch For Your Kids.
- You are comfortable paying for a compatible carrier plan and have verified coverage and family-setup rules.
The watch still needs an iPhone for setup, and cellular does not guarantee every function will work without the phone nearby.

Who should buy Apple Watch SE 3?
It is a strong fit for
- First-time Apple Watch buyers who already own a compatible iPhone.
- SE 2 owners who value Always-On display, faster charging, or the new temperature and sleep features.
- Families considering Apple Watch For Your Kids and willing to use the cellular model and a supported plan.
- People who want Apple’s fitness, notification, and safety ecosystem without paying for every premium sensor.
Look elsewhere if
- You use Android or do not have a compatible iPhone.
- You specifically need ECG or other premium sensors.
- Multi-day battery life, premium materials, or rugged outdoor specialization is a priority.
- You do not want the continuing expense of cellular service but need phone-free connectivity.
For iPhone owners seeking an affordable Apple Watch, SE 3 is a meaningful step forward from SE 2. Choose the 40mm GPS model to keep the purchase price lowest; move to cellular only when phone-free connectivity or family setup justifies the added hardware and service cost. Buy a higher-end model when its particular health or ruggedness features—not simply its position in the lineup—solve a real need.
