No: the Apple Watch SE 3 did not get a plastic case. Apple announced the watch on September 9, 2025, and began selling it on September 19 with an aluminum case in Midnight or Starlight. The more consequential surprise was inside: the SE 3 gained an Always-On display, S10 chip, fast charging, sleep and temperature features, and sleep-apnea notifications. It still leaves out ECG and blood-oxygen tracking, so the right choice depends on which health tools you need.
What happened to the plastic-case rumor?
Before launch, reports said Apple had considered a rigid plastic enclosure for its next budget watch, potentially as a way to reduce costs and make the design more colorful or child-friendly. Follow-up reporting said the idea was facing internal challenges. Those reports described a development possibility, not a confirmed product specification. The watch Apple ultimately shipped has an aluminum case, not plastic. (9to5Mac’s report on the rumor; follow-up report.)
Apple introduced the SE 3 at a U.S. starting price of $249. That is its launch price, not a guarantee of current pricing or availability in every country; check the Apple Store for the configuration and market you are considering. (Apple’s announcement.)
What the SE 3 is made of
The SE 3 comes in 40mm and 44mm sizes, with an aluminum case in Midnight or Starlight. It is not an all-aluminum watch: the rear is nylon composite, and the front uses strengthened Ion-X glass. Apple says that glass is four times more crack-resistant than the SE 2’s cover glass; that is a comparative test claim, not a promise that the screen cannot crack. The watch is water-resistant to 50 meters and is suitable for shallow-water swimming, but not scuba diving, waterskiing, or high-velocity water activities. (Apple technical specifications; TechRadar review.)

The meaningful upgrades are features, not the shell
Always-On display and S10 performance
The SE 3 adds an Always-On Retina OLED LTPO display, so the time and watch face can remain visible without raising your wrist or tapping the screen—a notable change from the SE 2. The display reaches up to 1,000 nits and comes in the same 40mm and 44mm case sizes. Apple also moved the SE line to its S10 chip, with a dual-core processor and four-core Neural Engine, and increased storage to 64GB. It supports on-device Siri, Double Tap, and Wrist Flick gestures. Sharing the S10 generation with premium watches does not make the models equivalent: their displays, materials, sensors, and feature sets differ. (Apple announcement; specifications.)
More useful sleep and temperature features
The SE 3 adds wrist-temperature sensing, sleep tracking with sleep stages and a sleep score, and retrospective ovulation estimates in Cycle Tracking. Apple also lists sleep-apnea notifications—a feature sometimes incorrectly omitted from pre-launch or incomplete feature lists. Apple says the watch looks for consistent signs of moderate-to-severe sleep apnea over a 30-day period. The feature is intended for people aged 18 or older who have not already been diagnosed; it is a notification feature, not a diagnosis or a substitute for clinical testing. Temperature sensing is not intended for medical use. (Apple specifications.)
Other listed health features include high- and low-heart-rate notifications, irregular-rhythm notifications, cardio fitness, and Cycle Tracking. The SE 3 still does not have ECG or blood-oxygen tracking. These omissions reflect missing sensor hardware, not settings an owner can simply switch on. It also lacks hypertension notifications available on supported higher-end models. If those specific measurements matter to you, the SE 3 is the wrong Apple Watch to buy.

Faster charging, not longer rated battery life
Apple rates battery life at up to 18 hours under its standard test, or up to 32 hours in Low Power Mode. The 18-hour rating is unchanged from the SE 2, so fast charging—not a longer battery rating—is the practical improvement. Apple says the SE 3 can reach about 80% charge in 45 minutes; 15 minutes can provide up to eight hours of normal use, while eight minutes can provide up to eight hours of sleep tracking. These are Apple test estimates, not guaranteed runtimes. Cellular use, signal strength, workouts, display behavior, and apps all affect battery life. (Apple specifications.)
5G cellular and safety features
GPS models cover the basics; optional GPS + Cellular models add 5G RedCap/LTE connectivity, subject to the model, country, compatible carrier, coverage, and a cellular plan. The plan is an ongoing expense, so cellular is most worthwhile if you regularly leave your iPhone behind or are setting up a watch for a family member. Confirm carrier support and service requirements before paying for the cellular version; see Apple’s cellular information.
The SE 3 also includes Emergency SOS, Fall Detection, and Crash Detection. International emergency calling is supported only on compatible models and in supported locations. Cellular connectivity can be useful for family setups, including Apple’s “For Your Kids” setup, but watch compatibility does not mean every feature or carrier service is available everywhere.

Apple Watch SE 3 vs. SE 2
| Feature | SE 2 | SE 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Case | Aluminum | Aluminum |
| Display | Not Always-On | Always-On OLED |
| Chip | S8 | S10 |
| Storage | Earlier-generation capacity | 64GB |
| Charging | Standard charging | Fast charging |
| Temperature sensing | No | Yes |
| Sleep score | No | Yes |
| Retrospective ovulation estimates | No | Yes |
| Sleep-apnea notifications | No | Yes |
| Cellular | LTE | 5G RedCap/LTE on supported models |
| Apple-rated battery life | Up to 18 hours | Up to 18 hours |
| Sizes | 40mm and 44mm | 40mm and 44mm |
The case remains familiar, but the display, charging, chip, storage, and health features make the SE 3 a substantial functional step up. For an SE 2 owner, it is most compelling if you want the Always-On display, overnight sleep tracking with faster top-ups, or the new temperature and sleep features—not simply because you expect a new case design.

At launch in the U.S., Apple listed the SE 3 from $249. TechRadar reported launch prices of $249 for 40mm GPS, $279 for 44mm GPS, $299 for 40mm GPS + Cellular, and $329 for 44mm GPS + Cellular; cellular service costs extra. Treat those figures as launch pricing and verify today’s price in your country before buying. (Apple; TechRadar.)
- Choose 40mm GPS if you want the lowest-cost configuration and generally carry your iPhone.
- Choose 44mm GPS if you prefer a larger display; it costs more at launch but does not require a cellular subscription.
- Choose GPS + Cellular only if calls, messages, or connectivity away from your iPhone are worth both the hardware premium and a compatible carrier plan. Check whether your carrier supports the intended family setup if buying for a child.
The SE 3 requires an iPhone 11 or later—including iPhone SE (2nd generation) or later—running iOS 26 or later. It is not an Android-compatible watch. It launched with watchOS 26. (Apple technical specifications.)

Who should buy the Apple Watch SE 3?
It is a strong fit for first-time Apple Watch buyers who want notifications, workout tracking, safety features, sleep tracking, and everyday heart monitoring without paying for flagship health hardware they will not use. Its Always-On screen removes one of the SE line’s most visible compromises, and fast charging makes overnight sleep tracking easier to manage.
It can make sense for SE 2 owners who specifically want the Always-On display, temperature sensing, sleep score, retrospective ovulation estimates, sleep-apnea notifications, more storage, or faster charging. If your current watch meets your needs and you do not value those additions, the unchanged 18-hour battery rating and familiar exterior make upgrading less compelling.

Consider a higher-end Apple Watch if you need ECG or blood-oxygen tracking, want premium case materials or a larger, more modern display design, or prioritize the most advanced health hardware. Conversely, skip the SE 3 if you do not own a compatible iPhone, or if charging a watch daily is a deal-breaker.
For parents, cellular can make a watch more useful when a child is away from a phone, but check carrier, country, family-setup, and plan support first. Do not buy cellular on the assumption that its features work independently of an iPhone in every situation.
