Apple Watch SE 3 and Apple Watch Series 11 both launched on September 19, 2025. The SE 3 became a stronger entry-level watch with an Always-On display, sleep features and faster charging; Series 11 adds ECG, hypertension notifications, a brighter display and longer battery life. The key health distinction: SE 3 does not support hypertension notifications, but Series 11 is not the only Apple Watch that does. And no Apple Watch provides cuff-style blood-pressure readings.
Before buying: both models require an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later. US Apple starting prices are $249 for SE 3 and $399 for Series 11; configuration, cellular service and promotions can change the final cost.
The 2025 launch: a substantial SE upgrade, not a radical new shape
Apple announced Apple Watch SE 3 and Series 11 on September 9, 2025, and both went on sale September 19. That means the old “set for a redesign” framing is now a completed product story. Apple’s materials document a significant feature and hardware refresh for SE 3, but not a wholesale change to the familiar Apple Watch form. The practical change is that the lower-cost model gained features that make it more useful day to day, while remaining distinct from the Series line.

SE 3 uses Apple’s S10 chip and adds an Always-On display, fast charging, sleep score, sleep-apnea notifications, wrist-temperature sensing, retrospective ovulation estimates, expanded Vitals data, 5G capability, on-device Siri with health-data access, and wrist-flick and Double Tap gestures. It retains safety tools such as Fall Detection, Crash Detection, Emergency SOS and Check In. Apple’s SE 3 announcement lists the launch features.
#1 Best Overall
- GET SMARTER HEALTH INSIGHTS—Apple Watch SE 3 is an advanced health tracker that helps you better understand your body. The smartwatch sends alerts for an irregular heart rhythm, or an unusually high or low heart rate.* You can view your overnight health tracking metrics with the Vitals app,* track your sleep score, and get sleep apnea notifications.*
- A GREAT FITNESS TRACKER—SE 3 can track your workouts in a healthy number of ways—from running and strength training to simply achieving your 10K steps a day. With real-time metrics and Workout Buddy powered by Apple Intelligence from your nearby iPhone,* you’ll hit your goals like never before.
- KEEP HELP CLOSE AT HAND—SE 3 is a smartwatch that can detect a hard fall or severe car crash and automatically help connect you to emergency services and notify your emergency contacts.* Check In can automatically notify a loved one when you’ve arrived at your destination.
- WOMEN’S HEALTH INSIGHTS—SE 3 has advanced sensors that track your wrist temperature while you sleep. With this smartwatch, you can log your periods and symptoms, get period predictions, and get notified of cycle deviations.*
- GREAT BATTERY LIFE AND FASTER CHARGING—Enjoy a smartwatch with all-day, 18-hour battery life* from sunup to sundown. Then charge up to twice as fast as SE 2* and get up to 8 hours of battery in just 15 minutes.*
That is a meaningful refresh, especially for someone upgrading from an older or basic watch. It does not make SE 3 a Series 11 equivalent: the SE lacks ECG and hypertension notifications, among other higher-end features.
What Series 11 adds
Series 11 also uses the S10 chip, so the most important reason to pay more is not a chip-generation gap. It is the broader health and hardware package: ECG, hypertension notifications, a brighter display, longer rated battery life, faster charging, and aluminum or titanium case options. It is available in 42mm and 46mm sizes, versus SE 3’s 40mm and 44mm.

Series 11’s display is rated up to 2,000 nits, compared with up to 1,000 nits on SE 3. Apple rates Series 11 for up to 24 hours of normal use and 38 hours in Low Power Mode; SE 3 is rated for up to 18 hours and 32 hours, respectively. Apple says Series 11 charges from zero to 80% in about 30 minutes and SE 3 in about 45 minutes. For both, 15 minutes of charging is rated to provide up to eight hours of use. These are Apple estimates, not guarantees: cellular use, workouts, notifications, display settings, sleep tracking, temperature and battery age can all affect actual runtime. See Apple’s model comparison for the feature breakdown.
Hypertension notifications are a signal to follow up—not a blood-pressure reading
Series 11 introduced Apple’s hypertension notification feature, but it does not measure or display systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Instead, Apple describes a passive system that analyzes optical heart-sensor data over roughly 30 days for patterns associated with possible chronic hypertension. If a pattern is identified, the watch sends a notification; the user should follow up with conventional blood-pressure measurements and a healthcare professional.

Apple says the algorithm was trained using data from studies involving more than 100,000 participants and validated in a clinical study of more than 2,000. Those are Apple-reported figures, not a claim of independent testing here. The feature is not a diagnosis, may not identify every case, and should not be used to make medication decisions without clinical advice. Apple’s support guidance and validation paper explain its intended use and limitations.
It is also not exclusive to Series 11. Apple lists compatibility for Series 9 and later and Ultra 2 and later, subject to software, eligibility and availability. SE models, including SE 3, are excluded. So if you already own a compatible Series 9-or-later or Ultra 2-or-later watch, Series 11 is not necessary just to get this notification capability.

- A FULL-FEATURED HEALTH TRACKER—Apple Watch Series 11 gives you invaluable insights about your body, right from your wrist. - GET HYPERTENSION NOTIFICATIONS—Did you know that Series 11 can spot signs of chronic high blood pressure? By analyzing how your blood vessels respond to beats of the heart, it can notify you of possible hypertension.*
- SAFETY FEATURES—A smartwatch that puts your safety first. Series 11 can detect a hard fall or severe car crash, automatically help connect you with emergency services, and notify your emergency contacts.* Check In can automatically notify a loved one when you’ve arrived at your destination.
- A POWERFUL FITNESS TRACKER—With advanced metrics and motivating features like Pacer, Heart Rate Zones, training load, and Workout Buddy powered by Apple Intelligence from your nearby iPhone*—Series 11 is made to help everyone stay active, from runners and hikers to strength-training enthusiasts.
Apple says the feature is not intended for people under 22, people already diagnosed with hypertension, or pregnant users. Availability varies by region and regulatory status. A new owner should not expect an instant assessment: the system needs its review period and enough usable data, and notifications also depend on eligibility, setup, consistent wear and whether the algorithm detects a qualifying pattern.

Follow Apple’s instructions and take blood-pressure readings with an appropriate validated cuff if advised; discuss the results with a clinician. A watch notification cannot rule out a problem. Seek urgent care for emergency symptoms such as chest pain, severe shortness of breath, weakness or confusion regardless of what the watch reports.

Apple’s listed US prices are starting prices checked against its US store on September 24, 2026; size, materials and connectivity affect configuration pricing, while tax and promotions vary. Cellular hardware does not include free service: an eligible carrier plan may add a recurring charge. Blood Oxygen app availability is also subject to regional and regulatory limits, so verify the feature in your market rather than assuming it is active everywhere.
Which one makes sense for you?
- Choose SE 3 for value and everyday use. It covers notifications, workouts, sleep tracking, safety, basic heart notifications, sleep-apnea notifications and temperature sensing at the lower starting price. It is the sensible pick if ECG and hypertension notifications are not requirements and you can live with the shorter battery rating and slower charging.
- Choose Series 11 for the specific upgrades you will use. The extra $150 at the listed US starting prices buys ECG, hypertension notifications, a brighter display, more rated battery life and faster charging, plus titanium and larger-size choices. Those benefits are most persuasive if you prioritize health features or need more time between charges.
- Do not upgrade solely for hypertension notifications if your current watch already supports them. Series 9 and later and Ultra 2 and later are compatible, subject to the feature’s requirements. Nor should you buy Series 11 expecting a numerical blood-pressure readout or ongoing treatment monitoring.
- If blood-pressure management is the main need, use a validated cuff and clinical guidance. An Apple Watch can offer a notification for a possible pattern on supported models; it is not a cuff substitute. If you need multi-day battery life, advanced outdoor navigation or a watch for Android, consider whether an Apple Watch is the right category at all. Apple Watch requires a compatible iPhone, not Android.
Compatibility and setup checks
- Confirm you have an iPhone 11 or later and iOS 26 or later before buying; current SE 3 and Series 11 compatibility requirements are listed on Apple’s comparison page.
- Install compatible watch software and check that the specific health feature is available in your country or region. Age, medical history and pregnancy status can affect hypertension-notification eligibility.
- For cellular, check carrier compatibility, activation rules and monthly plan charges. GPS + Cellular is a hardware option, not a standalone promise of service.
- For health tracking, account for wearing the watch consistently and charging it. Series 11’s longer rating and quicker charging may make overnight wear easier for some people, but they do not guarantee continuous data.
