Apple Watch Series 10 Calls Sound Clearer in Noisy Places—Here’s What Changed

Apple Watch Series 10 improves phone and FaceTime audio calls by using an automatic voice-isolation neural network. The processing reduces background noise picked up by the watch’s microphones, so the person on the other end can hear you more clearly. There is no separate Voice Isolation switch to find or enable.

What changed on Series 10?

Apple says Series 10 uses a voice-isolation neural network running on its four-core Neural Engine to suppress surrounding noise during phone and FaceTime audio calls. Apple specifically cites crowded restaurants, city streets and windy outdoor conditions as examples (Apple’s launch announcement).

This primarily improves the outgoing microphone signal: the other caller should hear less of your surroundings and more of your voice. It does not guarantee perfect audio, improve cellular reception or fix problems with the other person’s speaker, microphone or network.

Don’t confuse three separate upgrades

• Voice clarity: noise suppression makes your voice easier for the other caller to understand.
• Speaker playback: Series 10 can play audio from Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, Apple Books and compatible third-party apps through its built-in speaker. That is separate from voice isolation.
• Connectivity: whether a call works away from your iPhone depends on a paired iPhone, Wi-Fi calling, cellular service and carrier support. Noise reduction cannot create a network connection.

Do you need to turn voice isolation on?

No user-facing activation step is documented. Apple presents voice isolation as an integrated Series 10 hardware and processing capability, not as a downloadable feature or Control Center toggle. Keep the watch and iPhone on supported, up-to-date software, then make a normal Phone or FaceTime audio call.

If calls still sound poor, check the microphone for clothing or debris, improve your position and connection, or move the call to an iPhone or Bluetooth headset. Do not assume that a software update added a hidden switch.

How to make a phone call from Apple Watch

1. Open the Phone app on the watch.
2. Tap a favorite, or scroll to Contacts and select someone.
3. You can also choose a person from recent contacts.
4. For a number that is not saved, tap the dialer button, enter the number and tap the call button.

During the call, the available controls let you move the call to the iPhone, open a keypad and use other call options. Apple’s full procedure is in its Apple Watch calling guide.

How to start a FaceTime audio call

You can ask Siri, for example, “Call Pete using FaceTime audio.” You can also start one from Messages:

2. Tap the contact’s profile picture at the top right.
3. Tap FaceTime audio.
4. Use Add People if you need more participants.

FaceTime audio requires an internet path and may have different account or availability requirements from a conventional phone call.

Can Series 10 call without the iPhone nearby?

Yes, but only when the watch has another supported connection.

Set up Wi-Fi calling

On the paired iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular > Wi-Fi Calling. Turn on Wi-Fi Calling on This iPhone, then enable Add Wi-Fi Calling For Other Devices when that option is available. Carrier support is required. Apple says the described watch scenario uses a Wi-Fi network the iPhone has connected to previously (Apple support).

For emergency calls, Apple advises using cellular rather than Wi-Fi when possible for the most accurate location. Availability varies by model, country and region (Apple’s availability notes).

Requirements and buying implications

• Series 10 uses an S10 SiP, four-core Neural Engine, built-in speaker and microphones.
• Independent cellular calling requires the GPS + Cellular model, a supported carrier and an activated plan.
• Apple’s refurbished Series 10 listing specifies an iPhone XS or later—including iPhone SE (2nd generation or later)—with iOS 18 or later (Apple listing).
• Apple rates battery life at up to 18 hours of normal use or up to 36 hours in Low Power Mode. Those are general-use estimates, not guaranteed talk-time figures.

Series 10’s call feature is most useful if you regularly answer calls while walking, commuting, doing chores or working outdoors. It is a weaker reason to buy or upgrade if you nearly always use AirPods, rarely call from your wrist or expect better signal strength. Cellular is the key purchase decision for leaving the iPhone behind; voice isolation itself does not require a cellular plan.

If calls still sound bad

1. Confirm the watch is actually a Series 10 and that the call is a supported phone or FaceTime audio call.
2. Keep the microphone area unobstructed and move the wrist naturally closer to your mouth.
3. Reduce direct wind and move away from the loudest noise source.
4. Check cellular coverage or move closer to a known-good Wi-Fi network.
5. Verify Wi-Fi-calling settings and carrier eligibility.
6. For privacy, a more controlled microphone or a longer call, switch to the iPhone or AirPods.

Voice isolation can reduce noise; it cannot eliminate extreme noise, compensate for a weak network or make a wrist speaker as private as a headset. AirPods generally offer better microphone positioning and privacy, while the watch’s advantage is convenience and hands-free access.

Should you buy Series 10 for calls?

Choose it for the combination of wrist-based calling and clearer voice pickup in moderately noisy environments, especially if you want to leave the phone behind. Consider a cellular configuration only if independent calling matters and your carrier supports Apple Watch service. If you seldom call from the watch or already use a headset, the improvement alone is unlikely to justify an upgrade. Series 10 launched in 2024, so in 2026 availability may mean remaining stock, refurbished units or resale; check the exact model, region and current condition before buying.
