Ming-Chi Kuo was right about the broad direction of the Apple Watch Series 10: Apple made it thinner and gave it a larger display. But the case sizes Kuo forecast—approximately 45mm and 49mm—did not match the 42mm and 46mm watches Apple released on September 9, 2024. His June prediction was a useful design signal, not an accurate specification sheet.
What Kuo predicted in June 2024
In a June 17, 2024 report, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo forecast that Apple would make its standard Apple Watch thinner and increase its size options from the then-current 41mm and 45mm cases to approximately 45mm and 49mm. He said the larger model would be comparable in case height to the Apple Watch Ultra. These were reported supply-chain predictions, not specifications announced by Apple. MacRumors’ summary of Kuo’s report also said the Ultra was expected to remain broadly unchanged and that a dark Ultra finish depended on production yields.
The millimeter labels on Apple Watch cases refer to case height, not the diagonal measurement of the screen. Some contemporary coverage described Kuo’s numbers as screen sizes, which can blur the distinction. 9to5Mac’s coverage likewise reported Kuo’s larger-screen forecast; the finished Series 10’s display area is a separate measurement from its case height.
Kuo also forecast that Apple would begin using 3D-printed components for some watch parts, identifying supplier BLT. That manufacturing detail should be treated as a reported prediction: the public product announcement and specifications cited here do not confirm that the Series 10 used those components. The product was not called “Apple Watch X,” a name speculated about before launch; Apple announced it as Apple Watch Series 10.

What Apple actually launched
Apple unveiled Series 10 on September 9, 2024, and made it available on September 20. Instead of the forecast 45mm and 49mm case heights, the watch came in 42mm and 46mm sizes. Both cases are 9.7mm deep. Apple described it as its thinnest Apple Watch to date and nearly 10% thinner than Series 7, Series 8, and Series 9. The official Series 10 technical specifications give these dimensions and display figures:

The lineup uses the S10 SiP, has 64GB of storage, and offers aluminum or titanium cases. Apple also announced a wide-angle OLED display, sleep apnea notifications, water-depth and water-temperature sensing, and faster charging. Health-feature availability can depend on compatible hardware, software, country or region, regulatory clearance, and user eligibility; Apple noted that not all features were available on all devices and in all regions in its launch announcement.

Why the screen got bigger without the predicted case sizes
Apple’s display comparison is based on active screen area, not case-height labels. It said Series 10 provides up to 30% more active display area than Series 4, 5, and 6, and up to 9% more than Series 7, 8, and 9. The larger area gives room for another line of text or larger text without reducing the amount visible, according to Apple.

A 46mm case therefore does not mean a 46mm screen, nor does Kuo’s forecast of a 49mm case mean a 49mm screen. Case height, display resolution, and active display area are different specifications.

How the thinner Series 10 compares with Series 9
For a Series 7, 8, or 9 owner, the display increase is real but limited by Apple’s own comparison to up to 9% more active area. The Series 10’s other changes may be more persuasive: thinner construction, lighter case materials, faster charging, the S10 SiP, and new health and water features. Apple said Series 10 aluminum cases weigh up to 10% less than Series 9 aluminum cases, while Series 10 titanium cases weigh almost 20% less than Series 9 stainless-steel cases. Those comparisons use different case materials, so they are not a like-for-like material comparison.
Series 10 retained Apple’s stated 18-hour all-day battery life. A thinner body does not, by itself, imply a longer battery rating. At launch in the United States, Apple listed Series 10 at $399; that is a historical launch price, not a verified current price or availability statement.

The largest Series 10 case is 46mm high; the Ultra’s is 49mm. That does not make the Ultra’s display automatically larger by the same proportion: case height and active screen area are not interchangeable. Apple described Series 10 as having its biggest Apple Watch display, while the Ultra occupies a larger, more rugged product category.

The practical distinction is a thinner, lighter mainstream watch versus the Ultra’s larger rugged case, outdoor-oriented design, and longer battery-life positioning. Series 10 may suit everyday wear and users who value a slimmer profile; the Ultra is the more relevant comparison for people who prioritize durability and outdoor use. Neither is universally better—the right choice depends on those priorities.

What the size mismatch does—and does not—tell us
The public information cited here does not establish why Kuo’s approximate 45mm and 49mm forecast differed from Apple’s final 42mm and 46mm cases. It does not show whether Apple changed the design after the report, whether Kuo’s sources described prototypes or internal measurements, or whether the report used an early casing plan. Treating any of those possibilities as the explanation would go beyond what the public record confirms.
The fairest verdict is claim-specific: Kuo identified the thinner design and larger-display direction correctly, but his exact size forecast did not match the product Apple shipped. The manufacturing prediction also remains unconfirmed by the cited launch materials.
Who should consider the Series 10?
Owners of Series 4, 5, or 6
The strongest display case for upgrading is here: Apple claims up to 30% more active screen area than those generations. A newer processor, thinner case, and newer health and water capabilities add to the case for an upgrade, subject to feature availability and compatibility.
Owners of Series 7, 8, or 9
Expect a more modest display change—up to 9% more active area by Apple’s comparison. Consider whether thinness, weight, faster charging, or the new features matter enough to justify replacing a recent watch.
Choosing between 42mm and 46mm
- Choose around wrist size and comfort, not only the screen-area number.
- The 46mm version may be preferable if larger text and a roomier display are priorities; the 42mm is the shorter and narrower case.
- Consider case material as well as size: Apple’s weight claims differ between aluminum and titanium.
- Apple said bands from earlier 41mm and 45mm models remain compatible with Series 10’s 42mm and 46mm cases. Band compatibility does not establish that every case protector or screen accessory will fit.
For the 2024 launch, Apple said watchOS 11 would support Apple Watch Series 6 and later, with an iPhone XS or later running iOS 18 required for the stated compatibility path. Current software and feature availability can change, so check Apple’s live compatibility and product information before buying.
