No—Apple Watch Series 4 cannot install watchOS 11. Apple confirmed the exclusion in June 2024, and released watchOS 11 on September 16, 2024. Series 4 GPS and GPS + Cellular models top out at watchOS 10.6.1 in Apple’s compatibility listing; the watch can still be used, but it won’t get watchOS 11 features.
Which Apple Watches support watchOS 11?
Apple’s full compatible-model list is:
- Apple Watch Series 6, Series 7, Series 8, Series 9, and Series 10
- Apple Watch SE (2nd generation)
- Apple Watch Ultra and Apple Watch Ultra 2
Apple’s shorthand is “Series 6 or later,” but that alone leaves out the supported SE and Ultra models. Compatibility means a watch is eligible for the operating-system update; it does not mean every watchOS 11 feature works on every model. Availability can also vary by region. See Apple’s watchOS 11 announcement for the feature and compatibility caveats.
Which models were left out?
watchOS 11 does not support Apple Watch Series 4, Series 5, or the first-generation Apple Watch SE. Both Series 4 versions—GPS and GPS + Cellular—are excluded. The distinction between SE generations matters: the second-generation SE is supported; the first-generation model is not.
The exclusion was first reported as a pre-release rumor in April 2024. Apple’s June compatibility announcement confirmed it. The old “might not include Series 4” framing is no longer uncertain.

Series 4’s last compatible version
Apple’s compatibility documentation lists watchOS 10.6.1 as the latest compatible version for Series 4. That does not mean the watch stops working: it means it cannot move to watchOS 11. Apple has not published a detailed technical explanation for why these models were dropped, so attributing the cutoff to a particular chip or sensor would be speculation.
Series 4 can continue using its installed software and ordinary functions, including notifications, alarms, timers, activity tracking, and compatible apps. Over time, individual apps or services may change their requirements, and software or security support should not be assumed indefinitely. The watch simply will not receive features that require watchOS 11, such as the Vitals app, Training Load, Check In, Translate, expanded Smart Stack features, and new Activity-ring customization options.
There is also an iPhone requirement
To install watchOS 11, Apple requires an iPhone XS or later running iOS 18 or later. Watch compatibility and iPhone compatibility are separate checks: a supported watch paired with an iPhone that cannot run iOS 18 does not meet the full requirement.

If you have a supported watch and the update is not appearing, check that the paired iPhone meets the requirement, then check available storage, Wi-Fi, battery level, and that the watch is on its charger. If your watch is a Series 4, no update appearing is expected, not an installation fault. Apple does not provide a supported procedure to bypass the model restriction; avoid unofficial firmware or jailbreak workarounds.
How to check which Apple Watch you have
- On the watch, open Settings.
- Tap General, then About.
- Check the model information or serial number and compare it with Apple’s Apple Watch identification guide.
Do not rely only on the case’s appearance—similar-looking generations can be easy to confuse. Apple’s compatibility table lists the supported software range for each model.

Keeping it is reasonable if it works reliably, its battery lasts through your day, and you mainly need basic notifications, activity tracking, alarms, timers, music controls, and workouts. There is no requirement to replace a watch simply because it missed a major update.

Consider upgrading if the battery has become inconvenient, you want watchOS 11 features, or you need capabilities available only on newer hardware. If buying used, confirm the exact model: a Series 5 is also excluded, while Series 6 and later, SE (2nd generation), and Ultra models meet watchOS 11’s watch requirement. Also check Activation Lock, battery condition, cellular compatibility if relevant, return terms, and the iPhone requirement. A watchOS 10-compatible listing is not automatically watchOS 11-compatible.

It is best to treat it as a support boundary rather than assume a specific hardware limitation. For any replacement, choose based on the features and support horizon you need—not merely the fact that a newer model can run watchOS 11.
