The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is already available. Apple announced it and opened preorders on September 9, 2025, then released it in stores on September 19, 2025. In the United States, it starts at $799 before tax. The 49mm GPS + Cellular watch’s biggest additions are satellite communication, 5G, a larger active display area, a 42-hour battery rating, hypertension notifications, Sleep Score, and precision dual-frequency GPS.
It is the best Apple Watch for outdoor safety, battery life, diving, and rugged use—but it is not automatically the best sports watch or the best value for ordinary smartwatch users.

The watch comes in Natural Titanium and Black Titanium. All Ultra 3 configurations include GPS and cellular hardware, although activating cellular service may require a separate carrier plan.
Price: what the $799 model includes
The Apple Watch Ultra 3 starts at $799 in the U.S., before sales tax. Apple lists some band combinations at that price, while the Titanium Milanese Loop configuration has been listed at $899. Band selection and sizing can therefore change the final price.
The $799 price covers the watch hardware and its included band; it does not necessarily cover:
- Monthly cellular service.
- AppleCare+.
- A premium or replacement band.
- Sales tax.
- Any replacement charging accessories.
Apple’s U.S. purchase flow showed AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss at $5.99 per month or $59.99 per year in August 2026. AppleCare One was shown at $19.99 per month. These prices, plan terms, and eligibility can change, so check Apple’s current buying page before purchasing.
Trade-in credit is not fixed. Apple’s buying flow displayed estimates ranging roughly from $30 to $295 or $305 depending on the device, condition, and transaction page. Treat those figures as estimates rather than guaranteed credit.
Design, size, and display
The Ultra 3 remains a large outdoor watch: a 49mm Grade 5 titanium case measuring 49mm high, 44mm wide, and 12mm deep. The Natural Titanium version weighs 61.6g; Black Titanium weighs 61.8g. It fits wrists of approximately 130–210mm, although exact fit depends on the band and its S/M or M/L size.
Its flat sapphire crystal, titanium case, customizable Action button, Digital Crown, side button, speaker, microphone, and siren are designed for demanding use. The trade-off is physical size. A 49mm case can feel bulky on a small wrist and may be uncomfortable to wear overnight.

The display is one of the more noticeable upgrades. Apple says the borders are 24% thinner, creating more active screen area without increasing the case size. Specifications include:
- Always-on Retina wide-angle OLED display.
- LTPO3 technology.
- 422 × 514-pixel resolution and 326 pixels per inch.
- 1,245 square millimeters of active display area.
- Up to 3,000 nits peak brightness and 1 nit minimum brightness.
- 1Hz always-on refresh rate.
- Night Mode on supported Ultra watch faces.
The 1Hz mode enables a continuously ticking seconds hand in supported faces and apps. “Largest display” should be understood as Apple’s largest Apple Watch display, not a universal claim about every smartwatch.
Battery life and charging
Apple rates the Ultra 3 for up to 42 hours of normal use and up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode. In Low Power Mode, Apple also quotes up to 20 hours of continuous outdoor workout tracking with full GPS and heart-rate readings.
Charging is rated at approximately 45 minutes from 0% to 80%. A 15-minute charge can provide up to 12 hours of battery life.
These are Apple test figures, not a guarantee under every workload. Apple’s normal-use test includes time checks, notifications, app use, a workout, music playback, sleep tracking, and a mixture of cellular and iPhone-connected time. Continuous GPS, cellular use away from the iPhone, music streaming, navigation, satellite communication, cold weather, frequent screen interaction, and battery aging can reduce runtime. The Ultra 3 lasts longer than ordinary Apple Watch models, but it still does not offer the multi-day or multi-week endurance of many dedicated sports watches.
Satellite safety and messaging
Satellite communication is the Ultra 3’s most important safety addition. When cellular and Wi-Fi are unavailable, the watch can support:
- Emergency SOS via satellite.
- Messages via satellite.
- Find My location sharing via satellite.
- Automatic emergency communication after a severe car crash or hard fall if the wearer is unresponsive and satellite line of sight is available.
Apple says satellite communication is included for two years with the Ultra 3. Emergency SOS via satellite does not require an active cellular plan, while messaging and Find My use can have additional requirements. Availability varies by country and region.

Satellite communication needs a clear view of the sky. Mountains, buildings, dense trees, weather, watch orientation, regional restrictions, and low battery can prevent or interrupt a connection. It is also limited messaging and safety communication—not a replacement for a dedicated satellite phone or two-way satellite messenger. Learn Apple’s satellite connection guidance and use the Connection Assistant before heading into remote areas rather than trying it for the first time during an emergency.

The Ultra 3 includes GPS + Cellular connectivity, LTE, and 5G capability using RedCap. With a compatible active plan, it can handle calls, messages, emergency services, music, podcasts, and supported apps away from an iPhone. International roaming depends on the carrier, country, and plan.
Apple’s U.S. buying page identifies AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Metro by T-Mobile, Boost Mobile, and UScellular as carrier options. The watch’s built-in cellular radio does not provide free service by itself: carrier activation, number sharing, coverage, supported bands, and monthly pricing all matter. Check Apple’s cellular carrier information and your carrier’s current terms.
Health features
Hypertension notifications
The Ultra 3 can notify users of signs consistent with chronic high blood pressure. It does not provide a conventional systolic or diastolic blood-pressure reading, and it is not a diagnosis. Anyone receiving an alert should seek medical evaluation and use a validated blood-pressure monitor as advised by a clinician. Availability can depend on regulatory approval, country, age, medical profile, and software.
Sleep Score
Sleep Score provides an overall score and classification, with contributing factors shown in Apple’s Sleep and Health apps. Apple says its approach was informed by guidance from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, National Sleep Foundation, and World Sleep Society, and developed using more than five million nights of Apple Heart and Movement Study data. It remains a wellness metric, not a medical diagnosis or definitive judgment of sleep quality.

The Ultra 3 also includes the ECG app, high- and low-heart-rate alerts, irregular-rhythm notifications, low-cardio-fitness notifications, sleep stages, sleep-apnea notifications, the Vitals app, wrist-temperature sensing, Cycle Tracking with retrospective ovulation estimates, Medications, and Mindfulness.
The Blood Oxygen app is subject to regional and device restrictions. Health features can also vary by language, hardware, software, regulatory approval, and account setup.

Fitness, GPS, and outdoor tools
For outdoor athletes, the Ultra 3 combines Apple’s smartwatch ecosystem with:
- Precision dual-frequency GPS using L1 and L5.
- Compass and always-on altimeter.
- Backtrack and Waypoint functions.
- Custom workouts and configurable workout views.
- Running, cycling, swimming, rowing, skiing, snowboarding, paddling, golf, HIIT, strength training, yoga, Pilates, and multisport modes.
- Workout Buddy, an Apple Intelligence-powered workout experience where supported.
- On-device Siri with access to health data, subject to software and language requirements.
Apple calls it the most accurate GPS in an Apple Watch. That is Apple’s claim; it should not be treated as proof that the Ultra 3 is more accurate than every Garmin, Coros, or Suunto device without independent comparative testing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWater resistance and diving
The Ultra 3 is rated for water resistance to 100 meters under ISO 22810:2010 and supports swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, and high-speed water sports within Apple’s published conditions. It supports recreational diving to 40 meters and includes a depth gauge, water-temperature sensor, and the Dive Computer app available through the App Store. Apple also lists EN13319 recreational scuba-diving compliance.
A 100-meter water-resistance rating does not mean unrestricted diving to 100 meters. Water resistance can diminish over time, and diving must remain within Apple’s recreational operating guidance. The watch is not a replacement for a professional dive computer for technical, commercial, or decompression diving.
Durability
The titanium case, sapphire crystal, IP6X dust resistance, and MIL-STD-810H testing make the Ultra 3 substantially more adventure-oriented than standard Apple Watch models. Apple lists testing against specified environmental, shock, and vibration conditions, along with operating temperature and altitude specifications.
Military-standard testing is not an unlimited durability guarantee. It means the device was tested against particular methods and conditions; drops, impacts, chemicals, water exposure, and extreme environments can still cause damage.

Compatibility: Android users cannot use it
The Apple Watch Ultra 3 requires an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later. It does not work as a normal smartwatch with Android phones. watchOS 26 supports Apple Watch Series 6 or later, Apple Watch SE 2 or later, and all Apple Watch Ultra models, but individual features vary by hardware, language, and region.
Best Value
- Snowboarding, skiing, mountain biking, rowing, and more — you’ll find tons of additional ways to take your favorite sports and activities to the next level with Ultra 3 in the App Store. Tap in. Max out.
If you use Android, do not buy the Ultra 3 expecting cross-platform support.
Apple Watch Ultra 3 vs Ultra 2
Ultra 2 owners should not upgrade merely because a newer model exists. The upgrade is most defensible if you specifically need:
- Satellite Emergency SOS, Messages, or Find My capabilities.
- 5G connectivity.
- The 42-hour battery rating.
- The larger active display area and 1Hz always-on behavior.
- Hypertension notifications or Sleep Score.
- The newest connectivity and GPS features.
If your Ultra 2 already provides enough battery, GPS, cellular service, and health tracking, its large titanium case, sapphire display, diving features, and core outdoor tools remain relevant. For many Ultra 2 owners, the Ultra 3 is an incremental rather than transformational upgrade.

Choose the Ultra 3 if you need satellite safety, the longest Apple Watch battery rating, 49mm titanium construction, recreational diving support, maximum brightness, or a rugged outdoor design.
Choose the Apple Watch Series 11 if you mainly want notifications, calls, Apple Pay, health tracking, fitness features, and iPhone integration in a less bulky watch. It is likely the more sensible Apple Watch for mainstream users who do not need Ultra-specific capabilities.
Choose the Apple Watch SE 3 if keeping the entry price down matters more than premium display, materials, satellite communication, diving, battery, and the Ultra’s expanded health and safety feature set. Compare the current models on Apple’s Apple Watch buying page before deciding.
Ultra 3 vs Garmin, Coros, and Suunto
The choice is primarily about priorities rather than a universal winner. The Ultra 3 is compelling for iPhone owners who want calls, messaging, apps, Apple Pay, health data, cellular service, and safety features in one device.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Garmin, Coros, and Suunto alternatives may better suit athletes who prioritize much longer battery life, structured training, recovery and workload analytics, endurance navigation, or a sports-watch-first interface. Exact features vary by model, and the Ultra 3 should not be declared superior or inferior across the entire specialist-watch market without model-by-model testing.
Who should buy the Apple Watch Ultra 3?
- Hikers, trail runners, campers, skiers, sailors, divers, and travelers who regularly leave cellular coverage.
- Apple users who value satellite safety and emergency communication.
- People who want the longest standard battery life available in Apple’s watch range.
- Users who need cellular calls and apps without carrying an iPhone.
- Buyers who want a rugged titanium smartwatch rather than a dedicated sports watch.
- Owners of older Apple Watches who need a major battery, GPS, cellular, or safety upgrade.
Who should skip it?
- Android users.
- People who only need notifications, payments, music controls, and basic health tracking.
- Ultra 2 owners who do not need satellite, 5G, longer battery life, or new health features.
- People with small wrists or a strong dislike of large, heavy watches.
- Athletes seeking multi-day or multi-week battery life and deep endurance analytics.
- Buyers unwilling to pay for a cellular plan or optional protection.
Verdict
The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is the best Apple Watch for outdoor safety, battery life, rugged construction, cellular independence, and recreational diving. Its $799 price is justified when satellite communication, 5G, a brighter larger active display, and longer endurance solve real problems for you.
For ordinary Apple Watch use, the Series 11 should offer better value, while the SE 3 is the lower-cost route. For serious endurance athletes who prioritize very long battery life and advanced training analytics, Garmin, Coros, or Suunto may be a better fit. The Ultra 3 is powerful and versatile—but its size, recurring costs, iPhone requirement, and limited battery advantage over specialist sports watches make it a targeted purchase rather than an automatic recommendation.
