Apple Watch Ultra 3 launched on September 19, 2025, and is available now. It starts at $799 in the U.S. and adds satellite communication, 5G cellular connectivity, a larger active display area, 1Hz always-on refresh, longer battery life, faster charging, Sleep Score, hypertension notifications, and new workout tools. It keeps the familiar 49mm titanium Ultra design, so this is a substantial practical upgrade rather than a complete exterior redesign.
Apple Watch Ultra 3 release date and price
Apple announced Apple Watch Ultra 3 on September 9, 2025. Preorders opened the same day, and retail availability began on Friday, September 19, 2025. As of August 18, 2026, it is an existing, currently available product—not an upcoming or rumored model.
The U.S. launch price was $799. Apple’s product page currently advertises an education price from $719 where eligible, but education eligibility, promotions, taxes, band choices, and regional pricing can change. The watch is a GPS + Cellular model, so cellular features may also require a compatible carrier plan with recurring charges.

The biggest Apple Watch Ultra 3 upgrades
Satellite communication
Ultra 3 adds built-in satellite communication for Emergency SOS via satellite, Messages via satellite, and Find My location sharing via satellite. This is the most important new capability for hikers, climbers, backcountry travelers, and anyone who regularly leaves cellular coverage.
Satellite communication is not a replacement for cellular or Wi-Fi. Terrain, trees, buildings, weather, and line-of-sight conditions can affect connection and response times. Apple says Emergency SOS, Find My, and Messages via satellite are included at no charge for two years after activation. Find My and Messages via satellite require a carrier plan.
There are also paired-iPhone conditions for SMS behavior. The iPhone must be powered on and connected to Wi-Fi or an active cellular network, although it does not need to be nearby. Satellite messages are slower and more limited than ordinary messaging, so users should not treat the feature as guaranteed communication anywhere.
Read Apple’s detailed satellite-service limitations before relying on it for remote travel.

5G cellular connectivity
Ultra 3 supports 5G, allowing the cellular watch to make calls, send messages, receive notifications, and stream music or podcasts without the iPhone nearby when service and plan support are available. GPS functions such as workout distance, pace, and route recording can work without the iPhone, but normal communications still depend on an iPhone connection or cellular/Wi-Fi availability.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →5G does not guarantee faster service everywhere. Performance depends on carrier coverage, signal strength, plan compatibility, network conditions, and location. Apple lists Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Metro by T-Mobile, and UScellular among U.S. national carriers supporting Apple Watch cellular service, but buyers should confirm eligibility and pricing directly with their carrier.
A larger, more readable display
The case remains 49mm, but Apple says Ultra 3 has 24% thinner display borders and a larger active display area. The screen uses LTPO3 wide-angle OLED technology, measures 422 × 514 pixels, covers 1,245mm², reaches up to 3,000 nits, and can dim to 1 nit. A flat sapphire crystal protects it.
The practical improvements are better off-angle readability and more usable screen space—not a larger Ultra case. The 1Hz always-on refresh also allows seconds to remain visible on supported watch faces and features rather than updating only once per minute.
Longer battery life and faster charging
Apple rates Ultra 3 for:
- Up to 42 hours of normal use.
- Up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode.
- Up to 14 hours of outdoor workout use with full GPS and heart-rate readings.
- Up to 12 hours of normal use after a 15-minute fast charge.
These are Apple estimates under controlled test profiles, not guaranteed results. The normal-use estimate includes defined amounts of time checks, notifications, app use, workouts, sleep tracking, cellular use, and Bluetooth-connected iPhone time. Low Power Mode uses a different profile. Actual endurance varies with cellular use, GPS, signal strength, screen activity, settings, temperature, and configuration.

Health features
Ultra 3 includes Sleep Score, sleep stages, sleep apnea notifications, hypertension notifications, ECG, heart-rate notifications, irregular-rhythm notifications, Cycle Tracking with retrospective ovulation estimates, Vitals, and training-related health insights. Blood oxygen hardware and app functionality are subject to regional restrictions.
Hypertension notifications are not continuous blood-pressure measurement. They are health notifications, not a medical diagnosis or substitute for professional care. Availability can vary by country, regulatory approval, language, and software version. Do not assume every listed health feature works in every market.
Fitness and outdoor tools
Ultra 3 provides dual-frequency precision GPS, Training Load, Custom Workouts, Race Route, Pacer, Workout Buddy, and multisport workout support. Cyclists can use power zones and FTP-related metrics, while compatible setups can show live cycling workout metrics on an iPhone.

Outdoor navigation includes a compass, waypoints, Backtrack, and offline maps. The watch also has a depth gauge and water-temperature sensor.
Apple documents recreational scuba use to 40 meters with a compatible third-party app. Oceanic+ requires a subscription, and recreational scuba support should not be treated as a universal replacement for professional or technical-diving equipment or training. The watch has a 100-meter water-resistance rating and IP6X dust resistance, but water resistance can diminish over time and is not a permanent condition.
Materials and sustainability
Apple says Ultra 3 contains 40% recycled content, including recycled titanium in the case and recycled cobalt in the battery.

Apple Watch Ultra 3 vs. Apple Watch Ultra 2
Ultra 3 keeps the Ultra 2’s broad physical identity: a large 49mm titanium case, Action button, rugged construction, and S10 processor. The most meaningful differences are connectivity, display behavior, battery, charging, and selected health capabilities.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Area | Ultra 3 change | What it means for Ultra 2 owners |
|---|---|---|
| Connectivity | Adds satellite communication and 5G | Most valuable if you travel beyond coverage or need more independent cellular use |
| Display | Larger active area, thinner borders, wide-angle OLED, and 1Hz always-on refresh | Improves readability and always-on behavior without changing the 49mm case |
| Battery | Apple rates it for up to 42 hours rather than the previous generation’s lower rating | A useful endurance gain, but not necessarily enough to justify replacement alone |
| Charging | Up to 12 hours of normal use after 15 minutes, according to Apple | More helpful for quick top-ups before sleep or a workout |
| Health and workouts | Adds or supports newer health insights and watchOS 26 features | Check software compatibility because many features are not Ultra 3-exclusive |
For most Ultra 2 owners, the upgrade is conditional. It makes the strongest case for people who specifically need satellite messaging, 5G, improved display behavior, additional battery headroom, or a particular new health capability. If Ultra 2 already meets your battery, cellular, navigation, and health needs, a full-price replacement is harder to justify.
Apple Watch Ultra 3 vs. the original Ultra
The upgrade is more compelling from the first-generation Ultra. There are three generations of hardware progress, including satellite communication, 5G, improved display behavior, a higher Apple-rated battery ceiling, faster charging, newer health notifications, and newer workout and navigation tools.
Original Ultra owners who are happy with the 49mm design can gain meaningful practical improvements without changing to a different form factor. However, the S10 chip means this is not primarily a CPU-performance upgrade, and the exterior remains recognizably the same Ultra design.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which features are actually new hardware features?
Not every feature associated with Ultra 3 requires buying Ultra 3. Hardware-dependent advantages include satellite communication, 5G support, the display hardware and 1Hz always-on behavior, and the battery and charging improvements. Many workout, navigation, health, and software features may also arrive on compatible older Apple Watch models through watchOS updates.
That distinction matters when comparing Ultra 3 with Ultra 2 or another recent Apple Watch. The deciding question is not simply whether a feature appears in Apple’s Ultra 3 announcement, but whether your current watch supports it through software.

Who should buy Apple Watch Ultra 3?
- Backcountry users: Satellite communication, offline maps, Backtrack, waypoints, dual-frequency GPS, and longer battery life are useful when coverage is unreliable.
- Runners and endurance athletes: The display, battery rating, Training Load, Race Route, Pacer, Custom Workouts, and multisport tools make it a strong Apple-centered training watch.
- Divers and water-sports users: The depth gauge, water-temperature sensor, water resistance, and compatible diving apps add capability, provided the watch’s recreational limits fit your needs.
- Travelers: Cellular independence can reduce reliance on a nearby iPhone, subject to carrier coverage and plan requirements.
- People who want the longest-lasting Apple Watch: Ultra 3 offers substantially more endurance than mainstream Apple Watch models, although it is still not a multi-week sports watch.
Who should skip it?
- Ultra 2 owners who do not need satellite, 5G, a larger active display, or additional battery headroom.
- Casual Apple Watch users who mainly want notifications, payments, sleep tracking, and basic workouts.
- Android users: Apple Watch requires a compatible iPhone and does not work with Android.
- Small-wrist users: The 49mm case and roughly 62g watch body may feel large, particularly during sleep.
- Buyers seeking multi-week battery life: Dedicated Garmin or COROS sports watches may be a better fit for that priority.
- Anyone unwilling to pay for cellular service or optional subscriptions: The watch remains usable without every add-on, but cellular and Oceanic+ costs should be considered before buying.
Important limitations before buying
Satellite is valuable, but not unlimited
Satellite services need suitable conditions and line of sight. They can be affected by terrain, foliage, buildings, weather, and location. Some functions require a carrier plan, some have a two-year included-service period after activation, and satellite messaging is not equivalent to full-speed cellular service.
Battery figures are maximum estimates
“Up to 42 hours” means Apple’s controlled normal-use test profile. Sustained GPS, cellular use, weak signal, music streaming, frequent screen interaction, and cold conditions can reduce endurance. The 72-hour figure applies to Low Power Mode, not ordinary full-function use.
- iPhone requirement: Setup and continued use require an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later. Apple Watch is not Android-compatible.
- Carrier requirement: 5G and cellular independence require a compatible carrier and plan. Coverage, roaming, activation fees, number-sharing rules, and pricing vary.
- Regional health limits: Health and blood oxygen features can vary by country, regulation, language, and software version.
- Water limits: The watch is rated to 100 meters and supports recreational scuba to 40 meters with a compatible app, but water resistance is not permanent and the product is not automatically appropriate for technical or professional diving.
- Subscriptions: Oceanic+ requires a subscription. Apple Fitness+ and Apple Music are optional services, and promotional trials may be limited by region and eligibility.
- Apple Intelligence: Any related features are dependent on supported software, language, region, and device requirements; they should not be assumed to be universally available.
Buying checklist
- Confirm that you use an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later.
- Decide whether you actually need satellite communication or cellular independence.
- Check your carrier’s Apple Watch plan, coverage, activation rules, roaming, and recurring cost.
- Choose natural or black titanium and verify that the band fits your 130–210mm wrist range.
- Compare the current Apple price with education eligibility and legitimate retailer promotions; do not confuse a current discount with the $799 launch MSRP.
- If you dive, check Oceanic+ pricing and confirm that recreational limits match your activities.
- Check regional availability for health, blood oxygen, satellite, and other regulated features.
Verdict
Apple Watch Ultra 3 is a major practical upgrade for remote connectivity and endurance, especially because satellite communication and 5G make the watch more independent from both cellular networks and a nearby iPhone. The larger active display, 1Hz always-on refresh, faster charging, and higher battery rating further improve everyday use.
