The key reason was Apple’s event date: the company unveiled the original Apple Watch on September 9, 2014, and scheduled its iPhone 16 event for September 9, 2024—exactly ten years later. That coincidence made an “Apple Watch X” announcement seem unusually plausible. It was still only a rumor, however. Apple launched the Apple Watch Series 10, not an Apple Watch X, and current reporting does not point to a major redesign arriving in 2026.

Updated for 2026 reporting.

The one key reason was the tenth-anniversary date

Apple introduced the first Apple Watch during its iPhone 6 event on September 9, 2014. Ten years later, Apple chose September 9, 2024 for its iPhone 16 launch event.

That exact date match supplied the central argument behind the Apple Watch X theory. Apple had a convenient anniversary moment, and the company had previously used anniversary branding for the iPhone X. In 2017, “X”—the Roman numeral for ten—signalled the iPhone’s tenth anniversary and accompanied a substantial design change.

The analogy was attractive: Apple could theoretically skip “Series 10,” adopt the name “Apple Watch X,” and present a redesigned watch as a milestone product. But an anniversary is marketing context, not proof of a product name or launch plan.

Apple has never confirmed that an Apple Watch X was planned.

What “Apple Watch X” actually meant

“Apple Watch X” was a speculative label used in rumor coverage. It did not necessarily describe a separate product from the watch that many reports expected Apple to call the Apple Watch Series 10.

The name became shorthand for two related possibilities:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Apple might use “X” to highlight the product’s tenth anniversary.
  • The anniversary model might receive a more substantial redesign than a normal yearly update.

Those ideas were often discussed together, but neither was confirmed. Readers should not treat every report mentioning “Watch X” as evidence that Apple had settled on that branding.

Why the redesign rumor seemed credible

The date was only one part of the theory. Several rumor streams described hardware changes that would have suited an anniversary edition.

  • A thinner case: Reports associated with Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman described a slimmer Apple Watch design.
  • A new band attachment system: Rumors suggested Apple could replace the long-running connector, potentially creating more internal space for a larger battery.
  • Larger displays: Coverage pointed to screen-size increases and a form factor potentially closer to the Apple Watch Ultra.
  • Internal changes: A new system-in-package design and rearranged components were also discussed.

These were separate, unconfirmed claims—not a verified specification sheet. The anniversary date made them easier to connect into a compelling story, but it did not establish that Apple would ship all, or any, of them.

What Apple actually launched in 2024

The September 2024 event produced the Apple Watch Series 10, not an Apple Watch X.

The Series 10 was a meaningful refinement. It introduced a thinner case, a larger display, and a redesigned metal back that incorporated the antenna into the housing. But it retained Apple’s existing band system rather than introducing the rumored connector change.

That result separates three things that rumor headlines often blur:

  1. Anniversary symbolism: September 9, 2024 was exactly ten years after the original unveiling.
  2. Rumored product direction: A thinner case, new connector, larger display, and broader redesign were reported.
  3. Shipped product: Apple released the Series 10 with design improvements, but not the radical “Apple Watch X” overhaul many readers imagined.

The original Apple Watch was unveiled in September 2014 but did not reach customers until April 2015, another reminder that an announcement date and availability date are not interchangeable. MacRumors outlines that timeline.

Why the Apple Watch X prediction did not come true

There is no public explanation from Apple for why an Apple Watch X did not appear. The careful conclusion is that the anniversary opportunity did not align with the rumored redesign.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The overhaul may have been delayed, scaled back, or never planned in the form described. Later reporting that again points to a future redesign makes a delay possible, but it does not prove that Apple had an internally scheduled Watch X and postponed it.

In other words, the original theory was not irrational. The date made the narrative plausible. It simply was not strong enough evidence to establish Apple’s product strategy.

Is an Apple Watch X still expected in 2026?

Current reporting does not support an Apple Watch X-style redesign arriving in 2026.

A March 2026 report citing Mark Gurman said the Apple Watch models expected later in the year were unlikely to receive major design changes. Separate June reporting associated a larger overhaul with the following year, while other coverage has treated 2028 as the more cautious possibility.

The outlook is therefore best understood as three separate levels of certainty:

Period What current reporting suggests Confidence
2026 A conventional annual refresh, often referred to as the expected Apple Watch Series 12, rather than a major redesign. Rumored, not confirmed
2027 A possible window for the long-discussed overhaul. Unresolved rumor
2028 A more cautious later expectation in some coverage. Unresolved rumor

Apple has not announced an “Apple Watch X,” a redesign date, or a new connector. See the 2026 redesign report, the later redesign report, and Macworld’s more cautious timing for the differing forecasts.

What a future redesign could change

Reports have mentioned several possible changes, but none should be treated as final specifications:

  • A new band connection mechanism.
  • A thinner or substantially reshaped case.
  • More internal room for battery capacity.
  • A larger or redesigned display.
  • Rearranged sensors and internal components.
  • Possible display-technology changes, including particularly speculative microLED claims.

The band connector is the most practical issue for current owners. If Apple changes it, existing bands could become incompatible with a future model. That possibility is not confirmed, and Apple could preserve compatibility despite redesigning other components.

Claims about blood-glucose monitoring and other advanced health features should also be treated cautiously. The available reporting does not verify that these features are coming to the next Apple Watch.

Should you buy an Apple Watch now or wait?

Buy now if:

  • You need a smartwatch immediately.
  • Your priorities are health tracking, fitness, notifications, or iPhone integration rather than a new industrial design.
  • You already value Apple’s established band ecosystem.
  • You are comfortable buying an iterative annual model.

Consider waiting if:

  • You specifically want a thinner or radically redesigned case.
  • A possible new band system would be a major reason to upgrade.
  • Your current watch already meets your needs.
  • You would regret buying several expensive bands before a possible connector change.

Do not wait solely for the name “Apple Watch X.” That branding has never been confirmed, and the tenth-anniversary launch opportunity passed in 2024. Wait only if the possibility of a future hardware redesign—not the letter X itself—is valuable to you.

Other Apple Watch options

The standard Apple Watch is not the only choice for readers who want to buy today:

  • Apple Watch Ultra: A distinct, larger design aimed at outdoor training, rugged use, premium materials, and longer battery expectations. It may suit buyers who want a visibly different watch now. See Apple’s official Ultra buying page.
  • Apple Watch SE: A lower-cost entry point for readers who want core Apple Watch features without waiting for premium redesign rumors. See Apple’s official SE buying page.
  • Current Series models: The mainstream option for buyers who want the newest available standard design. Check Apple’s current buying page for live models and pricing.

For cellular versions, check carrier compatibility and account charges separately. The available reporting does not establish any special carrier plan or subscription requirement for a future redesign.

Bottom line

The September 9 anniversary made an Apple Watch X feel unusually plausible in 2024, but it was never proof. Apple chose the Series 10, preserved the existing band system, and did not deliver the rumored radical redesign. Current reporting points to an iterative 2026 generation and a possible major overhaul in 2027 or 2028. Treat both the timing and the “X” name as unconfirmed.
