Apple Watches are water-resistant, not waterproof. Most current models can handle swimming, but each has activity and depth limits. Only the Apple Watch Ultra family is designed for recreational scuba diving and high-speed water sports, and even an Ultra is not permanently sealed against water. Apple says water resistance can diminish with age, impacts, cracks, repairs and chemical exposure.
Use the model-and-activity guide below before swimming, showering, snorkeling or diving. Apple’s full guidance is in its water-resistance support article.

Apple’s current model specifications are available for the SE 3, current lineup and Ultra.
“Waterproof” versus “water-resistant”
Waterproof suggests complete, permanent protection. Apple does not make that claim. A water-resistance rating describes laboratory testing under specified conditions; it is not a lifetime guarantee and does not make every water activity safe.

Seals can lose effectiveness over time. Drops, a cracked case or glass, disassembly, repairs, cleaning chemicals, heat, steam and repeated exposure all increase risk. A used or refurbished watch with any damage should be treated as unsuitable for submersion.
What do 50 meters and 100 meters mean?
The number is a test classification under ISO 22810:2010, not permission to descend to that depth. Movement, pressure changes, impact, jets and aging seals can stress a watch very differently from a controlled test. That is why Apple limits 50-meter models to shallow-water activities.
Ultra models carry a 100-meter rating and comply with EN13319 for recreational diving, but Apple still sets a maximum recreational scuba depth of 40 meters (130 feet). The rating and the operating limit are different things.

Can you swim, shower, snorkel or dive with one?
Swimming
Series 2 and later, including SE 3 and Series 11, are intended for shallow-water swimming when the watch is intact. Rinse it with fresh water after pool or ocean use. Chlorine, salt, sunscreen and lotions can leave residue and may affect finishes and bands over repeated exposure.
Showering
Apple specifically lists showering among activities permitted for Ultra models, but a shower is not a waterproof test. Soap, shampoo, hot water, steam, temperature changes and high-pressure spray are unfavorable conditions. The safest practice is to remove the watch, especially for hot showers, saunas, steam rooms and hot tubs.
Snorkeling and shallow free-diving
Series 10 and Series 11 support the Depth app to 6 meters (20 feet). Ultra models support it to 40 meters (130 feet). Stay within Apple’s stated limits and inspect the watch before entering the water.

Scuba diving
Use an Ultra only, and never exceed 40 meters. The Depth app is not a full dive computer: Apple says it does not provide decompression-stop information, gas analysis or equivalent mission-critical functions. Use a dedicated dive computer as your primary instrument when safety depends on it. See Apple’s underwater activity guide.
Water skiing and high-speed sports
Apple positions the Ultra line for high-speed water sports. Do not use SE, Series or older models for waterskiing, jet-ski spray, being pulled behind a boat or other high-impact water. Even an Ultra is not indestructible.
Activities to avoid on every model
- Steam rooms, saunas, hot tubs and very hot showers
- High-pressure hoses, jets and direct forceful spray
- Jumping into water with the watch leading the impact
- Deliberately testing a seal in a sink, tub or pool
- Any submersion after a crack, severe impact, bent case or questionable repair
- Charging while the watch or charger is wet
Water Lock and the Depth app do not waterproof the watch
Water Lock is software. It prevents accidental screen taps during a wet workout and, after you turn the Digital Crown, helps eject water from the speaker. It cannot repair seals, raise a rating or make an unsupported activity safe.

The Depth app reports underwater depth on compatible models. It does not turn a Series watch into a dive watch or an Ultra into a complete dive computer.

The case and band have separate requirements. Apple identifies the Leather Link, leather Modern Buckle, FineWoven Modern Buckle, Milanese Loop, Link Bracelet, and Hermès leather and knit bands as not water-resistant; Apple also advises against exposing stainless-steel and leather bands to liquids. Change these before swimming.

What to do after the watch gets wet
- Remove it from water immediately if the activity exceeded the model’s limits.
- Rinse away salt, chlorine, sunscreen or soap with clean fresh water.
- Wipe it with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Let it dry naturally. Do not use a hair dryer, heater, compressed air, sharp object or aggressive shaking.
- When it is out of the water, use the speaker water-ejection function if sound is muffled.
- Do not charge until the back and charger are completely dry.
- If charging, buttons, sensors, display or speakers behave abnormally, stop using it and contact Apple or an authorized provider.
Rinsing and drying remove residue; they cannot reverse liquid that has entered through a damaged seal. Apple’s underwater guide also describes a Depth and Water Seal Test for certain scenarios. Availability, eligibility and price vary by location, and a test does not guarantee permanent future water resistance.
AppleCare+ and liquid damage
Water resistance is not a promise of warranty coverage. AppleCare+ terms may cover accidental damage from handling, including liquid contact, subject to the applicable plan, eligibility, exclusions, taxes and service fee. Check the current AppleCare+ terms and repair options for your country. AppleCare+ does not make an unsupported watch or band suitable for water.
Which Apple Watch should a swimmer buy?
- Pool swimming: SE 3 is the basic choice; Series 11 adds broader health features and shallow-depth capability.
- Ocean swimming or snorkeling: Series 11 works within its 6-meter limit; Ultra offers more margin and a 40-meter Depth app.
- Scuba or high-speed water sports: Consider an Ultra, stay within 40 meters, and carry a proper dive computer for safety-critical diving.
- Used watch: Condition matters more than the original rating. Avoid submerging a cracked, heavily impacted or previously opened watch.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Treat an Apple Watch as water-resistant fitness electronics, not a permanently waterproof instrument. Match the model and band to the activity, avoid heat and high-pressure water, rinse and dry it afterward, and never read a 50- or 100-meter label as a literal diving depth.
