For most athletes, the Polar H10 is the safest overall choice. Its ECG-based sensor, ANT+ and Bluetooth support, two simultaneous Bluetooth connections, single-session memory and stated 400-hour battery make it a dependable reference for intervals, cycling, running and HRV work. Polar lists it at $104.95 in the U.S. when checked. If you use Garmin’s performance features, the Garmin HRM 600 is more capable; if you want the lowest-cost serious option, choose the Polar H9.
Chest monitors usually respond faster than wrist optical sensors because they detect the heart’s electrical signal rather than changes in skin blood flow. That advantage is most useful during short intervals, rapid intensity changes, cycling, strength training and beat-to-beat analysis—but fit, moisture, firmware and the activity still determine real-world results.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Best overall: Polar H10
The H10 combines electrical ECG measurement with ANT+, Bluetooth and two simultaneous Bluetooth connections, so it can feed a watch and an indoor-training app at once. It stores one workout internally, is rated for up to 400 hours and uses a replaceable battery. Polar’s technical white paper reports R-R-interval detection within 2 milliseconds; that is a manufacturer claim, not a guarantee of perfect readings in every workout. The H10 is a strong reference choice for heart rate and raw beat-to-beat data, but it does not add Garmin-style running dynamics or rich standalone sport recording.
#1 Best Overall
- WORKS WITH EVERYTHING: Polar HRM works with ALL HRM compatible Equipment.
- SUPREME ACCURACY: Widely recognized for its top precision by many sources, Polar H10 is the most accurate heart rate sensor in Polar's history. Polar H10 provides top quality measurement.
- CONNECTIVITY: Bluetooth, ANT plus and 5 kHz provide an excellent variety of connection options. You can use Bluetooth and ANT plus connections simultaneously as well as two Bluetooth connections simultaneously.
- POLAR PRO CHEST STRAP: With improved electrodes, an easy-to-use buckle and silicone dots, the strap is comfortable and interference-free.
- VERSATILITY: Polar H10 is fully waterproof and it has internal memory for multiple hours.
Choose it for multi-device training, HRV/R-R analysis and maximum protocol flexibility. Avoid it if you strongly prefer rechargeable hardware or will not wear a chest strap.
Best value: Polar H9
The H9 uses the same ECG approach and supports Bluetooth, ANT+ and 5 kHz transmission for compatible pools and cardio machines. Its replaceable cell is rated for up to 400 hours and the washable strap is straightforward. The trade-offs versus H10 are important: no onboard memory and no dual Bluetooth. It is ideal when one watch, phone, bike computer or machine will receive live heart rate.
Best premium Garmin option: HRM 600
Garmin’s HRM 600 records activities without a watch, then syncs them to Garmin Connect. It adds running dynamics, treadmill and indoor-track pace/distance on compatible Garmin watches, HRV data and swim recording/forwarding. Garmin lists three simultaneous Bluetooth connections, unlimited ANT+ connections, two strap sizes and a 5 ATM rating. Its rechargeable battery is rated for up to two months at one hour per day—convenient, but shorter-lived than coin-cell rivals—and it uses a proprietary charging setup. Buy it when you will use Garmin-specific metrics or need watch-free recording; it is excessive for simple live heart rate.

Garmin running alternative: HRM-Pro Plus
The HRM-Pro Plus remains relevant when running dynamics, treadmill pace and indoor-track distance are the priority and a discounted unit is available. These functions require compatible Garmin hardware, and current price and stock should be checked before buying. Non-Garmin users generally gain less from its premium features.
Best rechargeable alternative: Wahoo TRACKR
The TRACKR uses a rechargeable design and soft strap for cycling, running and app-based training. It is a logical modern option for Wahoo users and common ANT+/Bluetooth platforms. Confirm the current firmware, simultaneous-connection behavior and whether the exact model records internally before purchase; do not assume it duplicates Polar memory or Garmin dynamics.
Sports-bra option: Garmin HRM-Fit
HRM-Fit clips to medium- and high-support sports bras instead of wrapping around the torso. It supplies heart rate and running dynamics with compatible Garmin devices and is listed for up to one year of battery life. Fit depends on the bra’s construction, so it is not a universal substitute for a conventional strap and is less attractive for swimming or standalone recording.

Chest ECG versus optical arm bands and watches
Chest straps such as the H9, H10, HRM 200/600/Pro Plus and TRACKR detect electrical cardiac activity. Watches and arm bands such as the Polar Verity Sense and COROS Heart Rate Monitor use optical photoplethysmography. ECG generally handles rapid changes, wrist flexion, gripping and R-R intervals better, while an upper-arm optical device can be more comfortable, easier to put on and preferable with some sports bras. COROS notes that chest sensors usually produce stronger, less noisy interval signals, but no category wins in every activity or for every person.
Rank #3
- Sends accurate real-time heart rate and HRV data to compatible Garmin smartwatches and cycling computers, fitness equipment, and apps
- Comfortable machine-washable strap is available in two sizes (XS–S and M–XL) for the most ideal fit for your body type
- Understand how much you slow down when your foot hits the ground with step speed loss, and improve your running form with additional running dynamics, including stride length, vertical oscillation and ground contact time balance (requires compatible smartwatch)
- During activities where you can’t wear a watch, such as team sports, HRM 600 will record the workout and sync data, including heart rate, calories, speed, distance and more, directly to the Garmin Connect smartphone app
- Tracks daily metrics, including estimated steps, heart rate, calories burned and more, and syncs that data directly to the Garmin Connect smartphone app
Do not rank an optical arm band as identical to an ECG strap. Cold skin, sprints, strength work, motion and algorithmic filtering can change the result. A comfortable arm band that you wear consistently may still be the better practical choice.

Accuracy and HRV
Define “accuracy”: fast instantaneous response, average workout heart rate, peak rate, R-R precision or repeatable HRV. Independent ECG/laboratory validation is stronger evidence than marketing claims; reputable hands-on reviews are useful secondary evidence. HRV also depends on posture, breathing, timing, artifact correction and app algorithms. The same raw intervals can produce different HRV scores in different software. These products are fitness sensors, not diagnostic devices.
Connectivity
- Bluetooth Low Energy: phones, tablets, watches, Zwift, TrainerRoad and many connected machines.
- ANT+: Garmin and other bike computers, gym equipment and multiple receivers.
- 5 kHz: mainly compatible pools and cardio machines.
Check the exact watch or app, the number of simultaneous Bluetooth receivers, whether HRV/R-R data are accepted and whether underwater transmission is supported.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMemory and standalone recording
Choose HRM 600 for watch-free recording and Garmin Connect synchronization. H10’s single-session buffer is useful when a phone or watch is unavailable, but it is not a full sports-watch replacement. H9 and HRM 200 need a receiving device to save the workout.
Rank #4

- THIRD-PARTY APP SUPPORT -The H6 heart rate monitor chest strap works well with most fitness apps, like Strava, Wahoo Fitness, Polar Beat, DDP yoga, HR monitor, Openrider, Zwift, Runtastic, Coosporide.
- COMPATIBLE with BIKE COMPUTER - Works well with Garmin/CooSpo and other GPS bike computers, Provides the most accurate heart rate data for your riding, and helps you improve your riding experience.
- COMPATIBLE with SPORTS WATCHES - Works well with most BLE / ANT+ sports watches, and provides more accurate heart rate data to you.
Battery and replacement straps
Rechargeable does not mean longer-lasting. Coin cells in H9, H10 and HRM 200 are convenient for long intervals; HRM 600 and TRACKR remove battery-door maintenance. Check replacement-strap cost, whether the sensor module detaches, wash instructions and third-party compatibility. A worn elastic strap often causes dropouts before the electronics fail.
Swimming
Water resistance is not the same as useful underwater data. Polar lists H9 and H10 at 30 meters; Garmin lists HRM 600 at 5 ATM. Verify whether your watch can receive data underwater, whether the sensor stores it for later forwarding and which pool or open-water features are supported.
Compatibility snapshot
H9 and H10 are the broadest choices for Garmin, Polar, COROS, Apple Watch/iPhone, Android, Zwift, TrainerRoad, Concept2 and many gym machines when the receiving device supports the relevant ANT+ or Bluetooth profile. Garmin’s advanced dynamics and swim workflows require compatible Garmin hardware. Apple devices generally require Bluetooth, while many cycling computers and gym machines favor ANT+. A product cannot literally be assumed to work with every device.
Setup and troubleshooting
- Wet the electrode areas or use conductive gel.
- Place the strap directly below the chest muscles and tighten it enough to maintain contact without restricting breathing.
- Use the receiving device’s Add sensor or Heart-rate sensor menu; labels differ between Garmin, Polar Flow, Apple, Wahoo, Zwift and other apps.
- Pair each receiver separately, then confirm a live heart rate before starting.
For erratic readings, re-wet and reposition the strap, tighten it, wash and air-dry it, replace or charge the battery, remove and re-add the sensor, and test with one receiver only. Cold skin, static clothing, salt or detergent residue, body hair, corrosion, Bluetooth limits and a stretched strap are common causes. Replace the elastic strap before replacing the sensor module. If data vanish, check range, competing connections, transmission mode and whether the product actually has onboard memory. Garmin’s HRM 200 manual includes additional troubleshooting.
