Apple Workout and Fitness are the best starting point for most Apple Watch owners. They record workouts and connect them to Activity rings and Apple Health without requiring another subscription. Add a specialist app only when you want something Apple’s built-in tools do less well: guided classes, race plans, social competition, detailed strength logs, recovery guidance or outdoor maps.
There is no single best app for every athlete. The picks below are organized by what you want to do, with an emphasis on what the Apple Watch can actually handle—not just what an iPhone app promises.
Quick picks: which Apple Watch fitness app should you use?
| App | Best for | Apple Watch and iPhone role | Cost and main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Workout and Fitness | Everyday workout tracking | Start and record workouts on Apple Watch; review activity and workout history on iPhone | Basic tracking is built in; less specialized coaching, social features and strength progression than dedicated apps |
| Apple Fitness+ | Instructor-led home workouts | Follow classes on iPhone and use Apple Watch metrics onscreen when paired | Subscription; it is a class service, not a universal workout-log replacement |
| Strava | Social running, cycling and outdoor activities | Supports Apple Watch and iPhone; useful for activity sharing, clubs and challenges | Free and paid features; social comparison and privacy settings may not suit everyone |
| Nike Run Club | Guided running at no subscription cost | Running-focused app with guided runs and plans; check current Watch features in the App Store | Primarily for running, with less emphasis on advanced maps and non-running training |
| Runna | Structured race training | Plans integrate with Apple Workout; the Runna Watch app can record workouts and provide audio cues on supported software | Subscription-oriented and more than casual runners may need |
| WorkOutDoors | Custom watch screens and outdoor maps | Apple Watch-focused option for outdoor workouts; check the current listing for supported features | Can be too detailed for users who only need basic tracking; current price and offline-map details should be checked in the App Store |
| Gentler Streak | Lower-pressure activity and recovery guidance | Uses activity information to help interpret effort and rest; check current Watch and Health permissions | Wellness guidance, not a medical assessment or prescriptive race plan |
| Hevy or SmartGym | Strength-session logging | Designed around gym workouts; compare each app’s current Watch controls and Apple Health behavior | Free limits and paid features vary; verify current terms before subscribing |
| Peloton App | Instructor-led classes without Peloton hardware | Class content for iPhone; check current Apple Watch functionality for the membership and region | Another content subscription, and not necessary for basic workout tracking |
What Apple Workout, Fitness and Health each do
Apple’s built-in tools are easy to confuse because their names overlap:
- Workout is the Apple Watch app that starts and records activities such as running, walking, cycling, swimming and strength training.
- Fitness is the iPhone activity hub. It shows Activity rings, workout history, trends, awards, sharing and Fitness+ content.
- Health is the iPhone’s health-data repository. Depending on permissions, it can hold workouts and information such as heart rate, sleep and body measurements from Apple and other apps.
Third-party apps may read data from or write data to Health. That can be useful, but it also means two apps might record the same workout. For uncomplicated tracking, use Workout as the recorder and Fitness to review activity; add another app only for a feature you need.

Best overall: Apple Workout and Fitness
Use Apple Workout if you want to start a workout from your wrist, close Activity rings and keep a straightforward activity history in Apple’s own system. You do not need a separate paid app to record ordinary walks, runs, rides or gym sessions.
Workout is the sensible primary recorder for general activity. Fitness provides the iPhone view of your rings and history, while Health is where you can check data permissions and connected sources. This setup is also a good choice if you want fewer accounts, subscriptions and syncing steps.
Apple’s built-in apps are less specialized than the alternatives here: a runner may want a structured race plan, a cyclist may want a social community, a lifter may need detailed set-and-rep progression, and a hiker may want richer maps. In those cases, keep Apple’s tools as the baseline or use the specialist app as the single recorder for that workout.
Best guided workouts: Apple Fitness+
Fitness+ is Apple’s paid library of instructor-led workouts and meditation, accessed through the Fitness app. Apple lists 12 workout types plus meditation, sessions from 5 to 45 minutes, and new content added weekly. The current U.S. product page lists $9.99 per month or $79.99 per year, with a one-month trial for new subscribers; Apple also advertises three months free with eligible device purchases. Offers and availability can vary, so check Apple’s Fitness+ page for current terms.
You can use Fitness+ with an iPhone without an Apple Watch. With a compatible paired Watch, real-time metrics such as heart rate, calories and Activity-ring progress can appear onscreen during supported workouts. Apple describes Fitness+ as available in 49 markets as of January 21, 2026; language and content availability can differ by market. See Apple’s January 2026 update for that availability claim.

- GET SMARTER HEALTH INSIGHTS—Apple Watch SE 3 is an advanced health tracker that helps you better understand your body. The smartwatch sends alerts for an irregular heart rhythm, or an unusually high or low heart rate.* You can view your overnight health tracking metrics with the Vitals app,* track your sleep score, and get sleep apnea notifications.*
- A GREAT FITNESS TRACKER—SE 3 can track your workouts in a healthy number of ways—from running and strength training to simply achieving your 10K steps a day. With real-time metrics and Workout Buddy powered by Apple Intelligence from your nearby iPhone,* you’ll hit your goals like never before.
- KEEP HELP CLOSE AT HAND—SE 3 is a smartwatch that can detect a hard fall or severe car crash and automatically help connect you to emergency services and notify your emergency contacts.* Check In can automatically notify a loved one when you’ve arrived at your destination.
- WOMEN’S HEALTH INSIGHTS—SE 3 has advanced sensors that track your wrist temperature while you sleep. With this smartwatch, you can log your periods and symptoms, get period predictions, and get notified of cycle deviations.*
- GREAT BATTERY LIFE AND FASTER CHARGING—Enjoy a smartwatch with all-day, 18-hour battery life* from sunup to sundown. Then charge up to twice as fast as SE 2* and get up to 8 hours of battery in just 15 minutes.*
Choose Fitness+ if you want an instructor to lead a class and the Apple integration appeals to you. Skip it if your main need is route analysis, race-plan adaptation or a detailed strength log: those are different jobs from following a video class.
Best for social fitness: Strava
Strava is a strong fit for runners, cyclists, walkers and other outdoor exercisers who value clubs, challenges, segments and sharing activities. Its official U.S. App Store listing describes Apple Watch support as well as social tracking and safety features, including location sharing. Strava also promotes AI-powered Athlete Intelligence; treat any generated interpretation as app guidance, not a medical assessment.
Strava is not just for running, but its community features can be a drawback if comparison or public activity sharing feels stressful. Review privacy and location controls before recording or sharing routes. The exact division between free and subscription features, as well as pricing, can change; check Strava’s current listing or account options before paying.
If you want Strava to own the activity record, start the workout in Strava on the Watch rather than starting the same activity in Apple Workout too. If you prefer Apple Workout as recorder, check what Strava imports and avoid enabling a second recording path for the same session.
Best free running coach: Nike Run Club
Nike Run Club is a good first stop for runners who want guided runs and training plans without committing to a subscription. Its audio-led approach can be more approachable than a data-heavy training platform, particularly for someone building a running habit or preparing for an early goal such as a first 5K.

It is running-focused, so it is not a substitute for cycling, strength or broad activity tracking. Watch features and plan availability can change; check the current Nike Run Club information and App Store listing for supported Apple Watch behavior in your region. Use either NRC or Apple Workout to record a run, not both at once.

Best for race plans: Runna
Runna is for runners who want a structured plan toward a race or performance goal rather than just a record of completed workouts. Its support documentation says the service integrates with Apple Workout/Apple Fitness through WorkoutKit; it also says the Runna Apple Watch app can record workouts and provide audio cues on watchOS 10.6.2 or later. Check Runna’s Apple Watch guide for current setup details.
Runna is more specialized and subscription-oriented than a casual runner may need. The documentation establishes Watch integration, but it does not establish a current universal subscription price; billing can depend on country, store and offer. Check the live checkout or App Store listing before subscribing.
Before a planned session, decide whether Runna or Apple Workout will record it. Runna’s integration can send workouts into Apple’s system, so starting an overlapping workout manually can create duplicate records.
Best for advanced outdoor data and maps: WorkOutDoors
WorkOutDoors is worth considering if you want customizable workout screens and map-oriented features for hiking, trail running or other outdoor sessions. Its appeal is the ability to put more activity data on the Watch than a basic start-and-stop screen provides.

The extra detail brings a learning curve, and it is unnecessary if all you want is duration, heart rate, distance and rings. Confirm current map and offline behavior, compatibility and price in the official WorkOutDoors information and App Store listing before buying; those details can change. Do not assume every route or map feature works without the iPhone or a connection unless the current documentation says so.
Best for gentler activity guidance: Gentler Streak
Gentler Streak is aimed at people who want activity guidance that takes rest and sustainable effort into account, rather than treating an unbroken streak as the only goal. It can suit someone returning to routine or looking for a less pressuring interpretation of recent activity.
Its guidance is an algorithmic wellness interpretation, not medical advice, a diagnosis or clearance to exercise while ill or injured. It is also not a substitute for a detailed training prescription. Check Gentler Streak’s official information for current subscription options, supported features and data handling.
Best strength apps: Hevy and SmartGym
Strength training has different logging needs from a run: exercise selection, sets, repetitions, rest periods and progression over time. Hevy and SmartGym are candidates for people who want that gym history alongside their Apple Watch and iPhone use.
| App | Best reason to compare it | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Hevy | Exercise history and progressive strength logging | Current free-tier limits, subscription features, Watch controls, Apple Health writing and export options |
| SmartGym | Apple-oriented gym logging and Watch use | Current subscription or lifetime options, Watch workflow, Apple Health permissions and export options |
Neither should be selected on the assumption that every logged set becomes a complete Apple Health strength record. Check what the app writes back and whether that is enough for your use. See Hevy’s official site and SmartGym’s official site for current offerings. Choose the one whose on-watch logging suits your gym routine; verify current pricing and feature limits before paying.

Best alternative for instructor-led classes: Peloton App
The Peloton App offers guided classes across areas such as strength, cycling, running, yoga and mobility without requiring Peloton hardware. It is a content subscription, not simply a replacement for Apple Workout’s general-purpose recording.
It may suit someone who wants a broad instructor-led library, while Fitness+ is a more direct fit for a user who values Apple’s integrated experience. Current membership tiers, Apple Watch behavior and regional availability should be checked at Peloton’s app page before subscribing.
Choose by the workout and motivation you want
- Beginner who wants simple tracking: Start with Apple Workout and Fitness; add no subscription unless you find a specific gap.
- Trying to exercise consistently at home: Consider Fitness+ for guided sessions or Peloton for its class library, depending on content preference and current terms.
- Training for a first 5K: Try Nike Run Club’s guided runs and plans, after confirming its current Watch support.
- Preparing for a half marathon or marathon: Compare Runna’s structured coaching with your goal, schedule and willingness to subscribe.
- Cyclist who likes community and segments: Strava is the clearest social fit; review route privacy first.
- Hiker or trail runner: Investigate WorkOutDoors if maps and custom Watch screens are priorities; verify offline requirements.
- Gym user focused on progressive strength: Compare Hevy and SmartGym by their Watch logging workflow, Health writes and current subscription limits.
- Returning from illness, injury or overtraining: A lower-pressure app such as Gentler Streak may help frame activity, but follow qualified clinical advice for health decisions.
- Dislikes streaks, calorie pressure or aggressive prompts: Prefer a simple Apple Workout setup or a recovery-aware approach, and turn off notifications you do not want.
- Wants the fewest subscriptions: Keep Apple Workout/Fitness as the base and use Nike Run Club for running if its current free offer meets your needs.
- Already owns Garmin, Peloton, Oura or another ecosystem: Check which app is intended to be the source of truth and what it writes to Apple Health before adding overlapping tracking.
Set up one recorder to avoid duplicate workouts
Recording one activity in Apple Workout and a second app at the same time can produce duplicate workouts, inflated totals or confusing histories. Apps do not all import and deduplicate data in the same way.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Choose one primary recorder per workout. Use Apple Workout for general activity; Strava for a social run or ride; Nike Run Club or Runna for a guided or planned run; Fitness+ or Peloton for a class; and Hevy or SmartGym for detailed strength logging.
- Check Apple Health permissions. On iPhone, open Health, tap your profile, then review the connected apps and their data access. Labels can change between iOS versions; look for the Health data access or Apps section.
- Confirm what actually syncs. Some apps record directly, while others import a workout or send a planned session to Apple Workout. Open the app after exercising if it requires a sync, and verify the activity appears only once.
- Remove an unwanted duplicate at its source where possible. If duplicates remain, delete the unwanted workout from the app that created it or from Health, then review which app has write access for the relevant data types.
Apple Watch, phone-free workouts and compatibility
A Watch companion does not automatically mean a complete phone-free experience. Depending on the app, the iPhone may still be needed to set up a plan, configure screens, download content, review detailed results or sync data. GPS recording, offline maps, downloaded audio and streaming or location-sharing features are separate capabilities; confirm each one in the app’s current documentation rather than assuming it is included.
Runna’s support page specifies watchOS 10.6.2 or later for its Watch app. That is an app-specific requirement, not a universal minimum for the other services. For Apple’s newest Watch models as of January 2026, Apple states that Apple Watch Series 11, SE 3 and Ultra 3 require iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later; older Watches and apps have their own requirements. See Apple’s compatibility announcement before buying or updating.
Privacy, accuracy and common problems
Review location and sharing before your first outdoor workout
Check whether an app reads location, whether activities are public or limited to selected people, and whether route or live-location features are enabled. This matters especially in social apps such as Strava, whose listing highlights location-sharing safety features. Review current controls in the app itself; do not assume a social activity is private by default.
Treat activity measurements as estimates
GPS can be less reliable near tall buildings, under dense trees or indoors. Treadmill distance may differ from the machine and can depend on calibration. Watch heart-rate readings can be affected by fit, movement, sweat, tattoos and skin contact. Calorie values are estimates, and different apps may calculate calories or training load differently because they use different samples, assumptions and formulas. A disagreement between apps does not by itself show that either one has failed.
Recovery and readiness scores are interpretations, not diagnoses. No app can correct poor watch placement, missing permissions, low battery or incompatible software.
Quick Recap
Fix common sync and Watch issues
- App missing from the Watch: Open the Watch app on iPhone and check My Watch and the available apps list. Install the companion if offered, update iOS, watchOS and the app, and confirm the app has a native Watch version and compatible minimums.
- Workout missing from Fitness or Health: Check the app’s Health permissions, confirm which app recorded the workout, and open the iPhone app to trigger any required sync. Also check account sign-in and location or motion permissions where relevant.
- GPS distance looks wrong: Wait for a GPS fix before starting outdoors, choose an indoor workout mode inside, and check Location Services and motion permissions.
- Battery drains during long sessions: GPS, cellular use, streaming audio, maps and continuous heart-rate sampling can increase power use. Download audio or maps where supported, begin with sufficient charge and avoid unnecessary simultaneous tracking.
